Here is the entire book in one sentence: decide what the most important thing your business does/should be doing is and then find really good people to do it for you.In spite of flippant comments throughout that say, "Oh, if you're a solopreneur, this works for you, too," it's not true. It all boils down to hiring other people and then delegating to them.I can't help but wonder about all of the high reviews because not only are the ideas not new (some even directly lifted from others like Jim Collins), the writing style is so flippant ("Come closer to the book, no closer, SLAM! now I've slapped you with my leather glove") and sometimes even offensive (joke about suicide I found in poor taste), but it's so much longer than it needs to be. Surely this could have been a pamphlet.I am not someone who knows him or was given a copy of this book. I paid for it with my own money and I wish I had it back. I liked his Profit First book and used it. It had a similar writing style, but I don't think it was as bad as this. The Pumpkin Plan book wasn't as good as Profit First, but this one is nowhere near the value the others are. Do not buy this expecting it to teach you how to do anything other than tell other people to do your work. If those other people don't exist, this book will be of no/very little use to you.

Clockwork gives you all the tools to set up your business to run itself. I have worked with the author since 2016 as we put these processes to work in my business. Mike is my business coach and I received an advance copy of the book. It is spot on. It is actionable and fun in Mike's typical style. By following his advice and determining my queen bee role, I was able to focus on what only I could do and maiximize my impact. The team developed to fill the other roles and it set us up to grow. The 4 D's helped us understand and truly delegate tasks. These are just two examples that set us up for success in the 4 week vacation goal that he described in the book. I just got back from our vacay and it was amazing for me personally. I came.back renewed and clear in my purpose. I was surprised at the way my team had grown and was taking ownership of the business. This the ultimate reward. This book gives you all the tools to make it happen for you!

Using the principles in Clockwork allowed me to step away from the business and not worry. You've heard of The 4-hour Workweek? Well, this is a manual for the entrepreneur's 4-Week Vacation. For nearly 10 years, I ran a business as a solopreneur. Partly, I never wanted employees. Partly, I thought that I was hot stuff and never wanted to turn over that "talent" to others. Then last year, I saw the author Mike Michalowicz deliver a presentation at the QuickBooks Connect conference last year, where he introduced the concept of the "Queen Bee" role. To be honest, it felt familiar, especially when he divulged the 4 D's -- A system of delegating everything in your business (even if that means delegating to yourself). It's a way of setting up systems that empowers everyone to be their best possible self. That's when I realized that I was ready to grow with this kind of system in place. I realized that not having this system meant that I wasn't trusting my employees to do the right thing, with or without me (preferably without). That tied me to my business. I couldn't take a vacation, not really, because I was always worried that I'd have fires to put out. I thought that I was the only one that could get it done. I was wrong, and this book proved it to me.FWIW (and some full disclosure), Mike has also been a friend/mentor/coach of mine since the launch of his other books, Profit First and The Pumpkin Plan. And this book really is the next step in the evolution of those for any business owner. Yes, I had an early copy of the book and concepts, so I've been able to test a few of them. There are still things I'm working on. The concepts, however familiar or not, are laid out beautifully in Clockwork and have taught me that it's even better when your team doesn't need you for every decision.

I purchased this book on a recommendation from my business Mastermind group. My husband and I had read Mike's "Profit First" and it's made a huge difference in the life of our business, so purchasing his next book was a no brainer! I am about halfway through the book, and it's already made an immediate impact on our business decisions.Over the past year, I had started feeling burned out as an entrepreneur. As a business owner, I am managing a team of 10 (or 11? or 12? how many team members do I have now?), and it was becoming unwieldy. I'd already taken the step of hiring an operations manager, but as an entrepreneur I was still unsure of how to organize my business so that I can take days off or extended vacations. Enter "Clockwork!"My favorite part of the book so far is that each chapter has an action step that Mike encourages you to take immediately. For example, in the first chapter, he encourages you to email him your commitment to taking action. I did so, and he actually wrote me back! In another chapter, he tells you to download free worksheets to use in a time-tracking exercise for one week. I am three days into tracking my time, and it's already giving me really great insight into how I spend my time on my business. In another chapter, he gives you an exercise to do with your team. My staff members and I met on Zoom, and together we did the post-it note exercise. We all agreed that it was incredibly insightful, and we are all 100% committed to protecting and nurturing the new "Queen Bee Role" of our business. Getting my staff on board with this Clockwork plan has been a completely unexpected bonus of implementing this book.Tip: give yourself permission to read one chapter at a time and absorb it and follow through, before moving on to the next. I'm reading about 2 chapters per week about this pace, and I'm gaining so much from the process.

Review

In this lively, engaging, and persuasive book, Hacker and Pierson explain how much of our health and prosperity rests on what governments have done. American Amnesia will help slow the intellectual pendulum that is currently swinging towards ananarchic libertarianism that threatens more than a century of American progress.”—Angus Deaton, winner of the Nobel Memorial Prize for Economics in 2015“The best business book of the year on the economy.”—Brad DeLong, strategy+business“This is a fascinating and much-needed book. America once invented universal public education and sharply progressive taxation of income and inherited wealth, and has shown to the world that strong government and efficient markets are complementary—not substitutes. But since 1980 a new wave of anti-governmentideology has prospered, and is about to make America more unequal andplutocratic than Europe on the eve of World War I. If you want to understandwhy this great amnesia occurred, and how it can be reversed, read this book!”—Thomas Piketty, author of Capital in the Twenty-First CenturyIf you are curious about why our infrastructure, our roads and bridges and water systems, is falling apart—then read American Amnesia. Curious about why the U.S. spends almost 18 percent of our GDP on medical care, but has health outcomes that are at levels of many developing countries—then read American Amnesia."—Inside Higher EdProgress and prosperity in the United States, they demonstrate, have rested in no small measure on a constructive relationship between an effective public authority and dynamic private markets. We are now paying a terrible price for "forgetting this essential truth."—The Philadelphia InquirerAmerican Amnesia provides chapter and verse on why the public has good reason to be angry..."—The New York Times

American Amnesia: How the War on Government Led Us to Forget What Made America Prosper. Jacob S. Hacker and Paul Pierson. 2016.The first half of the Twentieth Century was characterized by economic extremes that included marked inequality at the turn of the century, severe economic collapse with the Great Depression, and recovery by enormous, debt-fueled World War II spending. This was followed from the 1940s to the 1970s by a brief Goldilocks just-right period when a mixed economy (democratic capitalism) not only made the US rich by providing robust growth but also avoided increased inequality by sharing gains at all levels of income. The mixed economy that made this possible was a combination of market forces to generate growth and government action to correct for the many predictable market failures that result from misalignment of investor’s self-interest and the public interest.A key component of the success of the mixed economy was bipartisan support for the active role of government, including from the leading Republicans and business leaders of the day, such as Eisenhower, Nixon, GE’s Owen Young, and GMs Charlie Wilson. These leaders supported collective bargaining, extensive social insurance, a reasonable social safety net, provision of crucial public goods, and interventions tackling market failures. Government activity during this Goldilocks period included redistributive progressive taxation, heavy investment in education and infrastructure, dominant investment in basic science and computer science, administration or oversight of social insurance, regulation of business and finance, and much more.Government action contributed enormously to the strong economic growth of this period. Increased productivity is the source of the growth of per capita GDP, and technical change is the source of most increased productivity (88% 1909-49). Most of the basic science that led to this technical progress during the period was funded by government. The US Defense department created the internet and provided funding and the biggest early market for many high tech items like computer chips and integrated circuits. The US government funded 18 of the 25 biggest advances in computing technology in the critical years of 1946-65, and 60-70% of university computer science and EE research in the 1970s to the 1990s. Government funding of infrastructure and education also contributed substantially to increasing productivity. The federally funded interstate highway system alone increased productivity by one-third in the late 1950s and one-fourth in the 1960s.Government actions to prevent or cushion the effects of many market failures were a major source of capitalism’s legitimacy during the years of the mixed economy and created a non-socialist alternative to harsh laissez-faire systems. Even Friedrich Hayek in The Road to Serfdom saw no reason “why the state should not be able to assist the individual in providing for those common hazards of life against which, because of their uncertainty, few individual can make adequate provision….The case for the state’s helping to organize a comprehensive system of social insurance is very strong.” Hence, where markets failed to do so, government worked to prevent increasing inequality, provided collective goods, regulated against externalities like pollution and excessive financial risk, protected consumers and investors from corporate predation and their own myopic behavior, and provided social insurance. So, what happened? What kind of American amnesia allowed the strong growth, widely shared gains, and decreased national debt (from 129% to 30% of GDP) of the mixed economy of the 1940s-1970s to be discarded in favor of weaker growth, gains almost entirely to the rich, and markedly increased national debt (from 30% to 100% of GDP) with market liberalism? Unfortunately, inflation and stagnation of the 1970s provided the opportunity for powerful economic interests to pursue tax cuts and deregulation to increase their fortunes by pressing for the shift to market liberalism. In retrospect, this shift did little to address the causes of the economic turmoil of the 1970s. The inflation was related to the 1973-4 OPEC oil embargo, Johnson’s earlier guns and butter spending, and Nixon’s loose monetary policy prior to reelection. The stagnation was related to slowing of post-war expansion, greater competition from recovering trading partners, and Carter’s appointment of Paul Volker to control inflation by raising interest rates. The right wing extremist libertarian Koch brothers, Charles and David, played a leading role in creating this antigovernment shift that targeted the mixed economy. Beginning in the 1970s, they brought together many of the nation’s wealthiest families into a rich people’s movement with a political infrastructure that rivals—and in some ways surpasses—that of the GOP itself. This organization now includes hundreds of nonprofit foundations that funnel hundreds of millions of dollars of tax-free, untraceable “dark money” to massive campaign contributions and lobbying. This system was enhanced by financing the legal campaign that led to the Citizens United decision to remove limits for corporate donations to these foundations and PACs.The Koch network also invested heavily in intellectuals, university institutes, think tanks, and right wing media to shape public opinion. The Koch’s secretive semiannual donor summits raised $889 million for the 2016 elections and were attended by many right wing billionaires, media celebrities, politicians, and even two Supreme Court justices. Enormous sums were also raised by allied but separate groups like Karl Rove’s PAC American Crossroads, which had a budget of $3oo million for the 2012 elections.Business leaders and associations were also captured by this right wing antigovernment wave. A widely circulated 1971 Lewis Powell memo (from the corporate lawyer and later Nixon Supreme Court justice) was a very influential blueprint for extensive transformation of US politics, academia, and media to serve right wing business agendas. The Chamber of Commerce switched course from relatively nonpartisan business advocacy to open collaboration with the GOP and extreme policies when Thomas Donohue became president in 1997. The chamber registered $1.1 billion in lobbying outlays from 1998 to 2014 and also spent additional large sums on Republican campaign contributions and efforts to influence the nation’s legal system. Of course, corporations also make direct political expenditures. From 1998 to 2014, FIRE (finance, insurance, and real-estate) alone spent $6 billion on lobbying and $3.8 billion on campaigns. The Chamber now essentially engages in political money laundering when it disguises the self-serving nature of donations from corporations and the superrich by redirecting them without attribution to their real targets. Donohue said, “I want to give them all the deniability they need.” For example, the health insurance industry silently transferred $102 million by this route to fight health care reform while negotiating publicly with the Obama administration. Many of the nonprofit foundations of the Koch network, such as Donor’s Trust and Freedom Partners, do the same thing. For example, three-fourths of $558 million donated for climate change denial was untraceable due to use of these conduits (Jane Mayers, Dark Money). The third leg of this attack on the mixed economy was the transformation of Republicans from a center right party that believed in compromise for fair governance of multiple constituencies to a radical right party that created dysfunctional government to obtain total victory for one constituency only—the rich and powerful. From 1994 on, the more a tax fell on the wealthiest Americans, the more important it was to cut it—particularly the estate, dividend, and capital gains taxes and the top marginal tax rate.During this time Republicans purged their ranks of many of their own moderates, routinized filibustering to block all majority party initiatives, provoked repeated government shutdowns, impeached President Clinton, resorted to mid-decade gerrymandering, systematically attempted to disenfranchise voters unlikely to vote for the GOP, refused to raise the debt ceiling to finance spending already appropriated, and blocked appointments of many federal judges and all appointments for some statutorily established bodies. Republican appointees to the current Supreme Court (before the death of Scalia) are four of the six and one of the ten most conservative in the last seventy-five years. Why would Republicans want to move so far to the right? To begin with, the Republican base is becoming older, whiter, more rural, and more male. Before the 1960s, conservatives were divided between Democrats in the South and Republicans elsewhere. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 changed that. Within a generation, southern conservatives changed from Democrats to Republicans at least partly from racial antipathies easily pandered to by ostensibly race-neutral language conveying racially charged messages. Other catalysts for Republican transformation are Christian conservatism, polarizing right-wing media, and growing bankrolling by business and the wealthy. Key components of the well-funded right-wing propaganda machine include Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News, built by Roger Ailes, a former consultant to Republican candidates, and conservative talk radio that dwarfs on-air minutes of liberals by more than 10 to 1.The two major figures within the Republican Party for its transformation were Newt Gingrich and Mitch McConnell. Gingrich’s strategy was to make bipartisan government dysfunctional to create misdirected voter anger against it and shift control to his antigovernment Republicans. In a 1988 speech, he said, “This war has to be fought with a scale and a duration and a savagery that is only true of civil wars.” His PAC sent out tapes to Republicans telling them how to demonize Democrats, including by a long list of “contrast words”: betray, corrupt, sick, decay, incompetent, disgrace, traitors, pathetic, obsolete. McConnell knew that voters would punish and reward politicians for events they have no control over, including failure of their opposition to play by the norms. Hence, he worked to deny even minimal Republican support to Obama by unprecedented use of the filibuster, procedural delay, and protracted bad-faith negotiation. Supporting roles are described for several other Republicans, including Tom DeLay, John Boehner, Paul Ryan and organizers of the Tea Party.Parties that become too extreme on the major issues of the day are supposed to lose. So why are Republicans winning even as middle of the road voters remain moderate? Turnout favors the GOP, whose affluent and elderly are more likely to vote than younger and minority Democrats, some of whom experience GOP-directed voter suppression. The increasingly rural base of the GOP is favored in all federal elections. With two senators per state, the smaller rural states with one-sixth of the population control one-half of senate seats. This same pattern contributes to the rural bias of the Electoral College, for which states are assigned one vote for each senator and for each congressman. After the 2014 election, Democrats had won the majority of votes for all seated senators but had only a 46 to 54 minority of seats. In the last five presidential elections (one after this book was written), Democrats won the general election four times but the presidency only twice because of the Electoral College. For the House of Representatives, Democrats won 51% of the vote but only 46% of seats in 2012 due to gerrymandering and higher percentages of Democrats packed into urban districts.According to Mann and Ornstein (It’s Even Worse Than It Looks), the first step in dealing with dysfunctional government and the overthrow of the mixed economy is to understand the origins of the problem. Seeing Republicans and Democrats as equally at fault superficially suggests objectivity, but it’s an abdication of responsibility. As they wrote:"However awkward it may be for the traditional press and nonpartisan analysis to acknowledge, one of the two major parties, the Republican Party, has become an insurgent outlier—ideologically extreme; contemptuous of the inherited social and economic policy regime; scornful of compromise; unpersuaded by conventional understanding of facts, evidence, and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition. When one party moves this far from the center of American politics, it is extremely difficult to enact policies responsive to the country’s most pressing challenges."Unfortunately, the prospect of sensible reform of our political dysfunction is likely to depend on a series of GOP electoral defeats. When conservative business leaders like the Koch brothers invested in Cato, Heritage, AEI, and other intellectual weapons of the right, they were playing the long game. When Gingrich and McConnell developed a strategy to tear down American government to build up GOP power, they were playing the long game. Those who believe we must rebuild a mixed economy for the Twenty-first Century need to play the long game, as well. Americans must remember what made America prosper.

More Americans need to become informed, involved citizen activists. Unfortunately, it now requires two or more full-time incomes to support a modest lifestyle that includes a roof over one's head and food on the table. Who has time to become either informed or involved in politics? Hence the biggest mouth, the loudest, most annoying and usually least competent lout in the room (or on the political stage) wins. Need proof? President Trump. Not even Barnum and Bailey could withstand that level of competition!

With Republicans frothing at the mouth to pull the pillars of every governmental agency to rubble, this book serves as an important reminder of how America gained its success: a strong government investment in public institutions and research that supplemented private enterprise and protected consumers. This is not an argument in favor of "big government," rather this book makes a firm argument that, after decades of ideological reactionary assault, we have forgotten that a strong government harnesses and focuses the private economy; that government and private market aren't at war with each other, a government creates a private market. Its best analogy is that Americans must treat the private market like a hand's nimble fingers and the government as the strong but less skillful thumb. A hand of all fingers would be wild and uncontrolled while being all thumbs would be clumsy and inefficient. A proper combination of agile fingers with a strong, protective thumb gives America its most balanced and optimized economy. Forgetting the advantages and protections of government will lead to greater economic turbulence, inequality, fraud, and vulnerability. I would be wary of pulling a building down if you don't want to be caught in the rain.

America’s “mixed economy,” in which the private sector and the government each do what they do well has been the key to the most successful economy in history. The nation pulled together in the second world war and that was followed by a few decades of phenomenal growth in the private sector and an expansion of public programs that were beneficially complementary to the private sector. The private sector performs better when the government is functioning well.In recent decades the balance of the mixed economy has tipped, largely due to the infusion of antigovernment ideology into our politics. Instead of cooperating in perpetuating what has worked well, we have become highly polarized with control being assumed by the plutocracy whose primary tool has become government obstructionism. By suppressing the government role in public programs and regulation we are seeing a deterioration in incomes, retirement plans, health care affordability, infrastructure maintenance, and a failure to improve our education systems, just to mention a few.A well balanced mixed economy works for everyone - individuals and families, and businesses. It even works well for the plutocracy, although it would slow, though not eliminate, the transfer of wealth from hard working American families to the billionaires at the top. Libertarians who live in the Ayn Rand fantasy world (Hard Randians) would continue to complain, never quite understanding the important complementary role that government does play in making this a better society for all of us.On reading “American Amnesia” you will understand why we have to abandon the politics of polarization and join together in supporting the appropriate roles of markets and our government in incentivizing a properly balanced mixed economy that in the past had served us so well. It can do so again.

The guide covers every topic you'll need to study for the test, and test formatting as well, with practice quizzes for each section. Some of the sample questions were nearly identical to the AFOQT, like the shape recognition and rotated blocks. The instrument comprehension section was very similar to the actual AFOQT, but uses images that are easier to read than the actual test. The block counting section is more difficult in this book than the actual AFOQT, because the practice questions have blocks of different sizes, yet the actual exam has blocks of equal size. The bad:I found at least two mistakes in this book, one of which made studying for the block counting more frustrating than it had to be.1. In Chapter 2: "Arithmetic Reasoning", the sample question for proportions at the bottom of page 34 comes to an incorrect conclusion. It seems as if the author accidentally switched the two corresponding ratio parts.2. In Chapter 6: "Block Counting", the example question on page 135 is incorrect, which can cause significant confusion. In the actual AFOQT, you are instructed that every block is the same size, making it quite simple, but pressed for time. The sample question asks how many blocks are touching #3, and gives the answer as 4 instead of the correct answer of 5. The author seems to be forgetting that the lower right hand block would also touch #3 on the side that we cannot see in the picture. This book definitely helped me prepare for the AFOQT though, and I would recommend it assuming you follow common sense when reading directions. In addition, I would recommend supplementing this book with other online practice tests and a review of the FAA's pilot handbook.

PROS:The aviation information, math, verbal, and table reading sections were very helpful. I had the impression that this guide's questions in arithmetic reasoning were more difficult than my actual AFOQT. The difficulty of this guide's table reading section was on point with the actual AFOQT. The block counting section was also very helpful.------------------------------------------------------------------------CONS:The instrument comprehension section is missing over half of its practice questions (pg. 123 - 132). This section is crucial! And plenty of practice is sorely needed. The missing pages are a huge disappointment.Coming from my engineering background, I believe the concepts of physics in this guide need to be carefully reviewed and explained more clearly. The explanations can be confusing and misleading. There were also quite a few typos scattered about.--------------------------------------------------------------------------OTHER COMMENTS:The new AFOQT removed two sections- hidden figures and rotated blocks. They also added a few sections, which extended the test period to 5 hours. The new sections are reading comprehension and situational awareness. This guide needs to be updated accordingly.I had a week and a half to prepare for my exam. I studied this entire guide, two practice exams from www.afoqtguide.com, the Pilot's Handbook from the FAA, and this WikiHow article (http://www.wikihow.com/Prepare-to-Fly-an-Airplane-in-an-Emergency). I scored well.TIPS (for future examinees):Bring water, long-lasting snacks (I brought two ClifBars), and do the practice tests under time restrictions. Do at least one full practice test with time restrictions to gauge how you feel during the exam.

This study guide is good for use as an introduction to the AFOQT, its format, and the types of material that you may encounter on the test. It does not, however, pay particular attention to detail and can be quite sloppy, especially in the sections covering sciences, where there are numerous typos that could easily cause confusion for readers without a solid science foundation. (A specific example of general carelessness can be found on p. 245, where you can still find Microsoft Word track changes markings.) It's also worth knowing that this study guide does not contain a full-length practice test. That said, I still found this guide useful, especially when supplemented with GRE math materials and sources that contain practice tests.

I will say this is the easiest to follow AFOQT study guide I have used. This book provides accurate pre-tests and helpful tips that helped me when taking the test. Before I took the AFOQT, I had not been to 'formal' school in about 10 years so I wanted to prepare properly. I will say that because of this book (and studying using the time constraints), I did well on my AFOQT. This book is what I have recommended to others who are looking to take the AFOQT.

Turned me from not knowing a single thing about flight to having all basic information. Great brushup on every other section. Definitely needed to supplement the flight section as it only has basic information, and I would have BOMBED the test if this was the ONLY thing I read. Also the chart-reading section was semi inaccurate. The book trains you to read from small charts, while the actual test had one HUGE chart that it based every question on the one chart. Probably would be best to create your own large (100x100) chart with random letters and test yourself to get as many coordinates as possible.

I am grateful for Dr. Weil for his just anger at the denial of aging, so prevalent in America. He excoriates the popular face-lifting, whose only purpose is to hide the age of person, and whose result is often a "plastic" immobile face. Dr. Weil also explains why young people run away from the old and the elderly--they are terrified of their own future fate, visible in the faces and bodies of the older people. I wish the good doctor talked more about the isolation of the aging, which is the elephant not many talk about. Especially I wish he talked about the isolation of aging women. While aging men succeed in dating younger women, aging women often fail to attract men who often measure a woman's attractiveness only by her external appearance.

Andrew Weil's book on "Healthy Aging" helped me to understand better how I can contribute towards my own aging process through simple accessible easy lifestyle changes while providing the science behind each recommendation. He made me understand that we are not slaves to our genes, but by changing our environment, through lifestyle changes, we can influence the genes that life served us. This to say that we can change some aspects of our make-up to push us towards a place of aging more gracefully and healthily. Hence, our destiny is in our own hands! We owe it to no one but ourselves to be happy, healthy and wealthy!

If you are over 50 and you haven't read this book you should.Dr. Weil appears to be spiritual not religious so keep that in mind as you read. He comments quite a bit on societies perception of aging. Hes decidedly NOT "anti-aging" and appears to believe that we should embrace aging and I fully agree. He addresses our American cultures aversion to getting old while many other cultures hold their aged in much higher reverence.Definitely worth a read. I don't agree with some of the things he says, but overall I consider Dr. Weil to be my health and fitness Guru.

I love Andrew Weil's website and I think very highly of his emphasis on healthy eating and nutrition, so I decided to pick up a couple of his books. This one is "just what the doctor ordered." The first half of the book is mainly devoted to theories about how to slow down the aging process. He discusses stem cell research and how embryonic stem cells might be able to grow new tissues and new organs, but it doesn't slow down the aging process. He also warns that multiplying new cells might also increase the risk for cancer.Weil also states that there is no evidence that eating fruits and vegetables and yogurt extend the length of life as much as it helps the quality of the life that we have. He also discusses HGH and mentions the bad side effects along with good news like increased muscle tone, better sex drive, etc. But none of these things amounts to a fountain of youth. He also mentions botox injections and restricted calorie diets and other anti-aging medicines, but none are proven to help. He finally suggests that we age gracefully by taking care of the body that we have the best that we can. He recommends the anti-inflammatory diet, which is heavy on fruits and vegetables (especially those with anti-oxidant properties), omega 3's (walnuts and salmon), white tea and green tea, and grains and legumes. Weil also recommends exercise (30 minutes a day) eight hours of sleep, relaxation/meditation, etc.But my favorite chapter in the book is when he talks about the value of aging. He notes that cheese is often better when it is aged, as is wine, whiskey, and even trees are beautiful when they are older. In the same way, people often are wiser and more beautiful on the inside, and so we shouldn't be so afraid of aging, even though there is good and bad associated with it.This is a very good book, and I highly recommend it.

On of the most informative books on mindful aging. Dr. Weil's philosophy of life is the backdrop for his sound, logical recommendations on how to age "successfully." Most folks give little thought to aging until it is too late and they are overweight and plagued with health challenges. This book will change one's thinking and gives specific ways to reverse these problems. Although this book was published 10 years ago, the information was cutting edge at the time. It is all very relevant. I keep it near my TV and read sections during the commercials. It plants kernels of wisdom each day.The book is a super value! It has the information to change the senior years of your life!!!

Lots of useful information in this book and an easy read. One does not have to read from front to back; rather one can pick different chapters depending on current interests.

Dr. Andrew Weil's book is a good source of level headed and knowledgeable advice. He cuts through a lot of the different beliefs floating around about what vitamins and supplements are good to take with science--of all things. I found that very helpful. I also enjoyed how he discusses a variety of areas that contribute to healthy aging, spiritual as well as physical. The entire book is permeated by the notion that there is such as thing as healthy aging, which you can influence although life does throw many of us some serious curves. And that aging is not a crime, but can be experienced as the coming to fullness of a fine wine!! If you are thinking of botox, read this first!

If you want to read the REALITY of aging well, this is a MUST read. On my short list of best health books and that is saying something.

I picked up this book after completing a handful of beginner drum instruction books. This book is very thorough in its subject matter, but unfortunately will not work in my current state of self study. I found myself wishing I had a teacher to explain concepts by the middle of the 1st chapter. It just moved from easy to complex very quickly. I ended up getting a couple more "basic" books that are working out for the better. I will save this book for when I've laid down more groundwork.

This book is a system for learning how to create drum fills. Goes from basic to advanced. Starts with component concepts - which are the building blockss for creating fills. Progresses into hand/foot concepts, drum to cymbal concepts, roll concepts, double bass concepts, to groupings of 3,4,5.The only thing I would add when using this book - also add hihat openings, Ride cymbal bell (and anything else one might think of) into the orchestrations. For the groupings they are for the most part hand to hand,or hand to foot. Try adding some sticking patterns (i.e. paradiddles, inverted paradiddles into the mix).

As with his double-bass book, Jeff Bowders presents some complex ideas for fills in his new book, "Essential Drumset Fills," but does so in an accessible manner wherein each lesson builds on the next, resulting in steady musical and technical growth. I've only had the book for a week and have just finished the first chapter, but the motion exercises contained therein already have me rethining my approach to my stock arsenal of drum fills. Jeff presents the material in a straight-forward manner, and peppers the text here and there with inspirational quotes from various sources. All in all, I can see this book becoming a valuable tool for drumset instructors, as well as the player interested in spicing up his musical vocabulary. Plus, the accompanying CD sounds great, and provides well-recorded examples of various exercises, as well as several play-along tracks, both with and without drums, that suggest Bowders has plenty of great musical ideas floating around in his head. I highly recommend this book, and think drummers of every skill level, from rank neophytes to Virgil Donati disciples, will find something useful between its covers.

I already owned Jeff's first book and DVD, so when I saw this reviewed in Modern Drummer magazine (and also here on Amazon) I knew I wanted it. However, I was concerned about MD's mention of "119 glue-bound pages". I wondered if I would have problems with this book on my music stand. I ordered it and was NOT disappointed!

Great selection. CD is good to have. Love it Good that have blank pages to create your on fills

I bought this package a couple of months ago. I have not had the time to practice a lot, but so far I can see that it is a very good book. Eye opener.Let me put it this way, I hope that some day I will be able to take lessons from this guy.Very good book.

this is by far the best fills book you will ever fall on, and the other fill books in the market (that i fell on) are either boring or too "school like" very very ugly fills. like march band fills etc.the audio is crystal clear, their is much information about fills not to bore you for ages.various difficulties from begginners to veteransi'm very moody when it comes to practicing, and this book has fill themes segregated, a chapter for double bass fills, a chapter for cymbal fills a chapter for motion , grouping etc.... so depending on what you feel like you can practice, this is the only book i found that has FILLS YOU Actually here in many of your favorite bands songs and wondered how the [...]did he do this :D very nicely worked fills.this book has helped me a lot!! if you want your fills to move to another level, buy that book.-ve points:-just like any other book, although the audio is around 70 tracks you have around 500 fills in the book and sometimes you wonder if some of the advanced fills you're playing sound right.one more thing the beats jeff plays before the fills are amazing, very groovy, you can pick some ideas from the grooves. not like the other boring books where you hear the same toub tak /toub toub tak beat on the whole audio :P5/5 get the book...
