Manchester's magisterial biography of Winston Churchill, warts and all. No matter how well you think you know Churchill's life, the Last Lion has much to offer. Moreover, the final volume will give you a perspective on the Second World War that will be new to most Americans. New and a little disconcerting. My only complaint is that Amazon packed this in a huge box with a couple of small airbags for packing. The 'box' of the boxed set arrived somewhat the worse for the wear, though the individual volumes are OK. You'd think that as much stuff as Amazon ships, they'd pack the products as if they understood their value.

While Jenkins and Gilbert's (excluding Gilbert's 12-volume official biography) treatment of Churchill are interesting, the narrative weaved by Manchester was far more engaging to me. This is also the most impartial and objective view of Winston and the events that shaped his psyche and view of the world. His idiosyncrasies become much more understandable when one considers the exceptionally bizarre environmental influences which molded him. And one finally marvels at his ability to positively influence world events to the extent he did. An amazing life.

The effort put into this work by both authors produced a readable lesson of history. I completed the third book recently and started to miss my daily visit with Mr. Churchill the very next day. He was a "larger than life person" his history is the history of the first half of the twenty century. The authors told his story in much detail from childhood to death. I learned history through his eyes. Some I already knew, but the personalities he engaged with during his life gave me some fresh new understanding of that periods. I could explain more and provide more details, but I do not want to spoil the reading for some other person. I highly recommend this box set, but be prepared to spend hours reading and enjoying yourself with Mr. Churchill, I did!!

You can read Churchill's 6 volume series covering the years of WWII, and I certainly recommend that you do. But you can easily get curious about the days before and after the second world war. Manchester covers the early and late days with help from a co-author in the third of the three books, as Manchester was ill and needed help to complete the trilogy. One thing this series does is to show how some things early in his life -- parental neglect, failures at school, his inability to make friends and so forth led him to develop a strong self-reliance and fearlessness that would serve him well in the offices of government. You also get a valuable idea of the customs and traditions of the time, so positive and negative actions of that era may astound you as a 21st century reader.I strongly encourage you to consider adding this series of books to your electronic library. There is much that we can learn between the cover and back of those books and the books do have a nice portion a humor folded in.

3,000 pages sounds like too much (thank you, Kindle!), but it isn't; this is a fascinating read. William Manchester obviously admires Winston Churchill and if you don't already, you will too.

After going through all three volumes it was volume one that I recall as the most enlightening and the most myth busting. Reading all three has increased my appreciation for biographies, of painstaking thoroughness and at times some unforgettable eloquence.

This set was new still in the shrink wrap. It was exactly as described and I was pleasantly surprised to get such a nice discount on this set. I have had my eye on this series for over a year. Great seller, great packing, fast shipping. Would highly recommend this seller

William Manchester's life work. Well worth the read.

Great family friendly ideas for keto slow cooker recipes. Easily put together and not too many ingredients. I've only had this book a week and have made 4 recipes already. All have turned out well and everyone has enjoyed them. I love slow cooker!

My favorite slow cooker recipe book by far! I'm on the ketogenic diet and this is exactly what I was looking for. I made the wild mushroom stroganoff and it was amazing- the family absolutely loved it. Can't wait to try every recipe in this book- there are tons to choose from. 5/5 recommend! Excellent ketogenic slow cooker.

99.9% of happiness that I got this book, 0.01% as I got it in kindle , I need to get paperback as it's better to have good cookbook just right in the kitchen and cook your fav keto recipes

This is a cool book. The recipes are easy. She has labels for which dishes are Dairy Free, Nut Free, Egg Free, Paleo, Vegetarian, and Under 30 Minutes, which are super handy if you’ve got a buddy coming over with difference dietary needs than you. There’s no photos in here, but they really aren’t needed. The instructions are clear. Be sure not to skip the intros before the recipes. She gives a lot of useful tips and ideas.

fast recipes to prep and leave for your slow cooker to make it readygrab the copy and enjoy!I also love the cover, so yummy

The recipes are quite good, and they are low carbohydrate, but I cannot categorize most of them as true Ketogenic recipes. The Ketogenic diet is distinguished by the fact that it is high fat, moderate protein, and low carbohydrate. Most of the recipes in this book are low carbohydrate and equal amounts of fat and protein. Some of the higher fat recipes have equal amounts of protein and fat. Others have more protein than fat. Some are even low fat! I do not believe that any of these recipes will promote ketosis, and the higher protein content of some of them would actually cause the body to lose ketosis if too many of them are consumed regularly or without some kind of side to increase fat intake. These recipes are closer to Atkins than Ketogenic. They are, however, very good and yield some very tasty meals. I would, however, not comsume them too often. When eating them, I would reduce the serving and supplement them with something to provide more fat.

Love this cookbook. The recipes are meals that you are familar with. some examples of recipes, pot roast, beef and cabbage, chicken chilli, beef shoulder bbq, chicken in salsa verde, meatballs and spaghetti squash. It also has breakfast, lunch, soups, side dishes, and desserts. not far out and boujee just real food. There are a few recipes that calls for rabbit, oxtail or lamb but I just plan on substituting that with chicken or beef..

The outside covers are in color and look nice. All of the inside pages are black and white, including pictures, which are not very helpful. Typos - ugh ... Cash of salt vs. Dash of salt. Most recipes are written to serve 6, 8, or even 12 - that's way too much for a home of 3 people. The recipes aren't "common or easy" for that matter. Several of the recipes call for different size crockpots. I have 1 crockpot - a standard size. This cookbook will not get used at all and if I could return this book for a refund, I certainly would.

#87,749 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

We're all bound to feel dispensable in one way or another at some point in life, and Holmqvist's book takes that notion to the not-so-distant future when it's a given that the childless in society will be sent to live out their final days at a facility where they engage in various experiments and donations until they have nothing left to give. The irony of course is that this is the first time most of the residents have ever felt a sense of belonging. The author's prose is sparse and to the point, and it's refreshing how everything plays out as it should given the parameters of this futuristic society. Its simple prose raises significant political and personal questions as to what has value in this world on multiple levels.

The Unit is where the "dispensable" are sent- people that are not needed ie non parents- and used for medical testing and organ/tissue harvesting to be used for the "indispensable" ie parents. I loved this book so much I got through it one sitting easy. The book focused on one character, Dorritt, and her relationships formed inside the Unit, the testing and 'donations' done there, inducing the 'final donations', and how those interact and change those relationships and mentalities.I was surprised a little by the ending, which I always enjoy, as it was not the ending I was predicting throughout the book, but still a great end! I am hoping the author keeps going with this imaginary world and comes out with a second book. I feel like the idea of dispensable and indispensables would be great to explore from another side such as the workers at the unit, or the indispensables receiving the donations...

A pleasant read with deceptively simple storytelling that poses some big questions. (I'm reviewing this on my second read of the book. The first time, I breezed through it, set it aside and then was surprised how it lingered. This time, I gave it a closer read.)The narrator Dorrit Weger describes life in a world where at age 50, for women, and 60, for men, people who have not had children or made "needed" attachments become "dispensable." They are moved to group homes where they take part in research experiments and then donate organs (until their final gift) for the benefit of society. The story takes place in the utopian confines of the dispensable Unit, a windowless luxury shopping mall where everything is free and Dorrit is free to spend her time eating, exercising, writing, and forming loving relationships with the other dispensables. There's exploration, not action. Our protagonist is passive, partly how she became dispensable. At the same time, she's threatened by a sinister dystopia, imprisoned by distant laws and bureaucracy, and under constant surveillance. Over time, dispensables sicken and display the wounds of the experiments they must take part it. Dorrit's friends disappear as they make their final donations. The dispensable are constantly aware that their worth lies in their monetary value to their more "needed" counterparts in outside world. Their lives, attachments, arts, and pleasures have no value otherwise.Far from being didactic, the novel lends itself to interpretation and offers itself up for questioning. Recommended for book clubs.Pairs well with: Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go.

This started out as a very interesting concept: if you're single and childless by a certain age, society puts you in a community apartment with all your food and amenities paid for, but you're harvested for organs and a guinea pig for new medicine to help better society. The novel was a missed opportunity. While the first 15% or so was super interesting, the last 1/2 of the book dragged on and became pretty boring and predictable. This could have been SO much better in another author's hands.

Imagine living in a society where single or childless people are considered dispensable. Oh, wait, we do. Okay, imagine that these people are legally dispensable. In The Unit, a Scandinavian dystopian novel, women over fifty and men over sixty, that are single, childless, and working in nonessential professions are sent to live in Reserve Bank Units. Here they have a comfortable living environment, everything they could want or need available to them at no cost. In exchange, they are expected to participate in drug testing and donate an organ or two or three, until the make their final donation, the heart. These organs are given to essential people, those with children, those needed by society. The Unit begins with Dorrit, who has turned fifty, works in the arts and has no children. She has to leave her house and her dog behind and move into one of these units. She quickly adapts to her new life, making friends and enjoying what the facility has to offer in the way of restaurants, exercise and swimming facilities, bookstores, and gardens. She does miss her dog, Jock, who she gave a a nice family but is not allowed to find out how he is. Because Dorrit is so healthy, the experiments that she participates in are much nicer than some of the other residents. But then Dorrit meets a man, falls in love, and miraculously becomes pregnant. But Dorrit will not be allowed to keep her baby, though she decides not to abort, it must be given to someone necessary. This changes how Dorrit has thought of her life and thinks of her new circumstances. This book was thought-provoking, but not really political, focusing mostly on Dorrit and her personal experience. The details of this government and society are mostly alluded to, though we know that Dorrit and others are aware of what will happen to them when they turn fifty. It is not known if the dispensable can leave the country before age fifty or if other countries engage in this practice. Sperm banks are available, so it leaves one to wonder why they don't have kids just to avoid this fate. In Dorrit's case, she actually had an abortion when she was in her twenties, thinking she had plenty of time to start a family. Now that she is pregnant, Dorrit rethinks how she had always thought of her life as a free-spirit and the way she thought of mothers.A lot was left unanswered, but I think the author just wanted to focus on Dorrit and her story and that I believe was the downfall of this novel. To take such a society but only portray it in a microcosm defeated the powerful effect the novel could have had. While an interesting subject, it could have been explored more fully, explored more relationships and lives of other characters. Perhaps the point of view of those living in the outside, essential world would have provided an interesting contrast. As a single, childless, forty-year old, this did hit close to home. Of course, I was most upset that Dorrit had to leave her dog as my dogs are my children. But then also, that was the relationship that the author portrayed the most poignantly, it almost had me in tears.my rating 3/5

New and Selected Poems, Volume One, by Mary Oliver

Review

Praise for the poetry of Mary Oliver:'One of the astonishing aspects of Oliver's work is the consistency of tone over this long period. What changes is an increased focus on nature and an increased precision with language that has made her one of our very best poets . . . There is no complaint in Ms. Oliver's poetry, no whining, but neither is there the sense that life is in any way easy . . . These poems sustain us rather than divert us. Although few poets have fewer human beings in their poems than Mary Oliver, it is ironic that few poets also go so far to help us forward.' -Stephen Dobyns, New York Times Book Review'Mary Oliver's poetry is fine and deep; it reads like a blessing. Her special gift is to connect us with our sources in the natural world, its beauties and terrors and mysteries and consolations.' -Stanley Kunitz'One would have to reach back perhaps to [John] Clare or [Christopher] Smart to safely cite a parallel to Oliver's lyricism or radical purification and her unappeasable mania for signs and wonders.' -David Barber, Poetry'I have always thought of poems as my companions-and like companions, they accompany you wherever the journey (or the afternoon) might lead . . . My most recent companion has been Mary Oliver's The Leaf and the Cloud . . . It's a brilliant meditation, a walk through the natural world with one of our preeminent contemporary poets.' -Rita Dove, Washington Post

About the Author

A private person by nature, Mary Oliver has given very few interviews over the years. Instead, she prefers to let her work speak for itself. And speak it has, for the past five decades, to countless readers. The New York Times recently acknowledged Mary Oliver as “far and away, this country’s best-selling poet.” Born in a small town in Ohio, Oliver published her first book of poetry in 1963 at the age of 28; No Voyage and Other Poems, originally printed in the UK by Dent Press, was reissued in the United States in 1965 by Houghton Mifflin. Oliver has since published many works of poetry and prose. As a young woman, Oliver studied at Ohio State University and Vassar College, but took no degree. She lived for several years at the home of Edna St. Vincent Millay in upper New York state, companion to the poet’s sister Norma Millay. It was there, in the late ’50s, that she met photographer Molly Malone Cook. For more than forty years, Cook and Oliver made their home together, largely in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where they lived until Cook’s death in 2005. Over the course of her long and illustrious career, Oliver has received numerous awards. Her fourth book, American Primitive, won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1984. She has also received the Shelley Memorial Award; a Guggenheim Fellowship; an American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters Achievement Award; the Christopher Award and the L.L. Winship/PEN New England Award for House of Light; the National Book Award for New and Selected Poems; a Lannan Foundation Literary Award; and the New England Booksellers Association Award for Literary Excellence. Oliver’s essays have appeared in Best American Essays 1996, 1998, 2001; the Anchor Essay Annual 1998, as well as Orion, Onearth and other periodicals. Oliver was editor of Best American Essays 2009. Oliver’s books on the craft of poetry, A Poetry Handbook and Rules for the Dance, are used widely in writing programs. She is an acclaimed reader and has read in practically every state as well as other countries. She has led workshops at various colleges and universities, and held residencies at Case Western Reserve University, Bucknell University, University of Cincinnati, and Sweet Briar College. From 1995, for five years, she held the Catharine Osgood Foster Chair for Distinguished Teaching at Bennington College. She has been awarded Honorary Doctorates from The Art Institute of Boston (1998), Dartmouth College (2007) and Tufts University (2008). Oliver currently lives in Provincetown, Massachusetts, the inspiration for much of her work. Beacon Press maintains a Mary Oliver website, maryoliver.beacon.org. Got this as a gift.

New and Selected Poems Vol. 2 by Mary Oliver: You get a lot of bang for your buck here, but I prefer getting the books of hers I love and skipping the ones I don’t. Her books tend to have strong themes that get lost in a greatest hits collection. That said I like this better than the first volume of selected poems. Excerpt (I like how she says “a right answer,” rather than “the right answer”): “Have I not thought, for years, what it would be/ worthy to do, and then gone off, barefoot and with a silver pail, to gather blueberries,/ thus coming, as I think, upon a right answer?/ What will ambition do for me that the fox, appearing suddenly at the top of the field,/ her eyes sharp and confident as she stared into mine,/ has not already done?”About Kindle version: Formatting is well-done except for a few stray hard hyphens.

Many of Mary Oliver’s poems flow with an anthem-like lyricism that often attests to the grandeur and mystery of the natural world. She plays the role of a quiet witness in order to observe and learn what life has to teach: how happiness is possible if you resign yourself to the rapture and beauty of the world around you. She wants to be invested in the glory and energy of nature and understand its holiness, its closeness to God. She loves all flora and fauna and wants to connect to them. Her compassion for life allows her to look upon the world with gratitude and appreciation. The wildness and sheer power and intensity of nature is more than miraculous; it is her source of bliss and strength. She allows the power of the natural world to keep her memory active with visions and dreams of her elemental self becoming one with the universe. Her poetry is an attempt to achieve that union, and few poets can inspire the way she does.

Oh, Mary! How I love you so. This book is as delightful and enriching as any of her other collection of poems. Mary knows nature. She knows presence. She knows how to love her life. She is a genius who never seems to feel the need to be "clever." ("Clever is for cocktail parties" a poetry teacher once told me.) Oliver expresses her wisdom in the purest, clearest, most sacred poems. Whenever I feel down, I read "Why I Wake Early": "Hello sun in my face," I say.

Saying that Mary Oliver writes "nature poetry" is like saying Louis Armstrong played the trumpet. Her verse is rich and deep, what Coleridge called philosophical poetry. And yes, she does look and listen deeply to the natural world, striving to be aware and yet become one with it. Oliver writes with passion in both the physical and spiritual senses. This collection is a way to spend some time in the company of a deep soul.

The only problem with a volume of Mary Oliver's collected poems is that whichever poems end up excluded are likely to be the reader's loss. Such incomparable consistency of craft and soul can be expected, every single time, from Ms. Oliver! That said, no poem here is undeserving of its inclusion, and if it took an anthology like this to have you wonder about reading her for the first time, then thank God for this book.Included here -note that this is only the first volume- are works from her earlier books, all of which are worth buying separately. A particularly important inclusion are the selections of American Primitive, in my opinion her most moving and accomplished collection. Those who adore poems like the glorious "Wild Geese" or were moved by the wisdom of "The Journey," will be happy to know that they are, of course, contained in this volume, along with many others begetting similar acclaim. So, five stars for Ms. Oliver only because I can't give her ten.As far as the publisher, I would have liked a clearer indication that this is the very same edition already published years ago. At least in my case, the additional subtitle -"Volume One"- confused me and led me to buy something I already owned. In the other hand, if such mention indicates the upcoming release of a second volume -specially if more uncollected poems may be part of it, I'll be satisfied and forgiving. For those who own everything by her and do not possess this volume, this is still a valid purchase on the basis of the, once, "new poems" contained and not available anywhere else.Welcome -or welcome back- to the poetry of Mary Oliver. Let these words take your breath away with its exquisite and gently fierce call to opening your heart and be intelligent toward all beings.

I love Mary Oliver poems and this is a wonderful collection. Nearly every one is starred or dog-earred in my book by now. I return again and again, reading these poems. It covers many years of her writing, and makes you amazed at the quality she produced from beginning to end. You see themes she returns to over time: nature, death, life. Rather big ideas!
