We are looking to install solar electric panels on our roof, and I ordered this book to get some background. Unfortunately, this book is of little value. If you know anything about this area, you probably don't need this book. The first 75 pages are basically garbage and fluff irrelevant to solar electricity. LIke most of the "Dummies" book, this one is filled with miserable attempts at humor. Please, just educate me. If I want humor, I will go to a YouTube channel. The book then covers ventilating houses, hydro power, and wind power; more wasted pages. How is this relevant to solar? Finally, on p. 249 the book finally takes on the technology of solar electric panels. Unfortunately, the technical content soon ends on p. 286. This is followed by a chapter on off-grid solar systems (for wealthy survivalists, I suppose). Finally, many pages are spent on how to hire a contractor, how to pay for a project, and how to sell a house.Maybe this really, really, is a book for dummies. Finally, this book's content is somewhat dated. Although it has a 2010 copyright, most of the content seems to date from the mid-2000's.
I'm considering a solar system and he has some very good chapters that have the information I wanted and was expecting based on the title. However he does have a lot of chapters that discuss general energy conservation. That's a sensible topic to discuss in this context but I had to get deep into the book to get to the portion that was my primary area of interest. It has good information and is worth the money but could benefit from a little reorganizing.
The title of this book is misleading to the buyer. I was thinking the contents had to do with actually placing solar panels, batteries, etc. to convert sunlight to power. There was very, very little of this. Book is mainly basics of home energy conservation, finance, very wordy and boring.
I was specifically looking for some information for configuring/sizing a solar system for my home. This book had a lot of good energy conservation suggestions; however, there was little to no information about configuring/sizing, or really any other information for someone to build a solar system themselves. Perhaps my bad, but I had thought of these "__________ for Dummies" books tailored toward the do-it-yourself-ers. That is not the case here. They focus on giving you suggestions for questions to ask contractors, but little details on the technical aspects of the system the contractor may, or might not install.
This guy goes on and on and on about everything but solar for about the first 250 pages. After the first two-thirds of the book he lightly touches on solar projects and then repeats some of the Solar projects over and over. Don't waste your time or money on this one.
Too much of the book on issues like global warming, and carbon foot print....I bought the book thinking it was a book on solar panel, power collection, storage and building the systems...it was a vast mix of other ways you could use the power of the sun....as cooking, heating, house building to complement solar heating, ways to insulate and seal your home, conservation.....I was let down on the whole book, the last 5 pages had vague diagrams on solar power systems...vague unmarked drawings and math.I felt as a captive audience to the book....let down
If your'e looking to go off grid, skip this one. Redundant common knowledge about home energy conservation. No "meat on the bone" hands on details here, mostly common knowledge. I read through half of it hoping it was going somewhere.... It didn't.
Mostly told me I was to dumb to install a system by my self, only talks about yard lights and stuff. When it gets technical it just tells you to hire a "profesional.
