It has very good information and it's very helpful. The only reason I have it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the lady reading it was somewhat monotone. The examples she used were okay too.

As a seasoned sales manager, I found that Colleen's book was both practical and actionable. The hardest part of managing sales people is the emotional intelligence - getting them to look in the mirror and be real, confident and goals-oriented. All of my sales people are reading this book as a guideline to emotional intelligence. Then we are using it together to trouble shoot problems and hopefully to gain more insight into how people work and make decisions. I recommend this for every sales manager...the practical techniques will help you sleep better at night.

Franklin, by all accounts, seems to be a humble person. This book is about how he got started and how he develop a passion for cooking.He focuses more on the details behind the how & the why of making great Q. He freely admits there isn't just one way to make good BBQ. He goes into his passion and love of what he's doing.The reality is he's extremely detailed oriented and he pays attention to every aspect of a cook and has made it a repeatable process. If you get this book you're not going to get anything that is earth shattering but you'll gain an insight into just how much work goes into running your own place. You'll also notice Francklin's attention to every little detail; he goes into how to build a fire in his preferred smoker and why he builds it like he does, the type of preferred wood, how old that would should. He pays this amount of attention to everything and that's why he's as good as he it.I look forward to the day that I can try his food. BBQ has become a passion and I love trying different Q all over the US - (I have a job where I get to travel).

Absolutely fantastic book. I bought 1 for myself...and then bought 1 for my Dad and one for my Father in Law...Probably get one for my Stepdad Soon as well. I laughed when I read the 1 star reviews. This is NOT a cookbook. This book is about how Aaron Franklin ascended to his position as being one of the best BBQ Cooks in the Nation. He talks about what he did, why he did it, and what he learned along the way. He talks about his victories and defeats and how he gained just a little bit of knowledge during each cook. What he could use he kept, what didn't work, he noted it, and tossed it aside. This is a great book on the science and theory of what is actually happening when you smoke something. The different kinds of wood that is used, the kind of smoker he likes, what temperature he prefers (275'), what he spritz's his meats with while they cook, when to pull the meat off, when to wrap it, what to wrap it with, how and why to rest it..etc. etc...I have been grilling for 20+ years, and been smoking meat for about 10, and this book really really taught me a lot of things, and cleared up some things that I have noticed, but hadn't really figured it out. He explains how to smoke meat in very simple terms. It IS simple to smoke meat...but you can totally screw it up if you don't do it right. A perfect example that he talks about, and I did this when I first started, but luckily figured it out years ago is the fact that rookies see that Beef is done at 160-165 degrees and they think, welp, its done, might as well pull it off. They pull it off and let it sit, and when they slice into it, its tough or if its pork, it doesn't pull or shred at all, and none of the fat has rendered and they think "What happened?? Well what happened is that yes, the meat reached a safe temp to eat, but not the OPTIMAL temp for BBQ. You want the internal temp at 203 degrees instead so the fat can liquefy and give the meat its juiciness and tenderness.That is just one example. He lays it all out there for you, and doesn't hold anything back. This is a simple process, but the devil is in those details, and he is adamant about them. There are a few recipes in the book, but this isn't a cook book per se. I did like the recipes on the BBQ sauces though and Ive made them all. Aaron keeps it straightforward and simple. If you don't learn anything from this book then you aren't paying attention. I read a 1 star review and the guy goes, "Yeah, I learned to use salt and pepper and post oak....lame"If you have that sort of mentality, then this book is definitely not for you, but if you want to reach in to what BBQ is, and how it is done right, and then you actually DO what he talks about, you will never screw up a piece of meat again.

If you're looking for that silver bullet that explains why your brisket isn't as good as Franklin's, you won't find it here. The truth is, there is no silver bullet. You want to believe that it's some magic ingredient, temperature, or other trivial element that makes his brisket so good and if you only knew that 1 secret, yours would be just as good. It's not that easy. It's a process. In all seriousness, he does let you in on the secret behind his great food, but it's not an easy shortcut. He had a passion, he tinkered, he produced some really bad BBQ but persevered, he paid attention to the details, tweaked some to experiment, found out what worked and what didn't and then, over time, became an expert with a well-developed sense of intuition. The truth is that formula has worked for hundreds of people, great writers, radio hosts, businessmen, programmers and other professionals uses that exact same set of steps to become masters, read their biographies and listen to their interviews, it's the same story. It's hard work, it's not because Aaron uses pickle juice blessed by a New Orleans witch doctor during an eclipse as an injection precisely 14.373581 hours before it goes on the grill. It's because he's got years of practice, years of paying attention to the details, learning what matters and what doesn't, and then persevering through the failures those experiments yielded.You might think since I've given away the "secret" to Franklin's BBQ, there's no reason to buy the book, right? You're wrong. In this book he imparts his story, which is interesting, he gives you several clues on which things matter and which things don't so you can start your journey with more knowledge than he did. You won't buy this book and then suddenly be able to cook the best BBQ on the planet, but you'll have a deeper understanding of the craft and you'll know where you should experiment and where you should learn from his mistakes.I found this book immensely valuable in my journey toward becoming an excellent pitmaster. I pre ordered the book and devoured it's info in just less than 48 hours after opening it. I did so because I ate at Franklins and it was the best BBQ I ever had, I made a bet that Franklin's book would be as excellent as his BBQ and I was right. There's a lot of great information here, but it's not like most BBQ books. It's much more about the process than the recipes (though it does have some). If you want a shortcut, look elsewhere but I think you'll ultimately be disappointed in the results. If you truly want to become a pitmaster and you're willing to put in some work, this is an excellent book to guide you in the right direction.

I enjoyed this book because it was a story from the Bible embellished by the author. It was entertaining and easy to read. Not a heavy tome. It seems a good way to learn more stories from the Bible. Sometimes the Old Testament is hard to get through and the simplicity of the text in the book make it more intriguing.

In my opinion, most religious fiction is not very good as everyone is just too nice or the scenes just aren't realistic as it's not "Christian" to write about how people really are. Lynn Austin, on the other hand, does a really nice job of fictionalizing a brief passage of the Bible into a full-length novel, and gets you into the heads of the characters. The imagery and scenery are very realistic and, for example, I could imagine me walking the dusty streets of the Middle Ages. The thing that struck me the most was this book really got me thinking and getting more out of the story than a random section of the 28th chapter of the book of Second Chronicles and makes me want to read the next one in the series: with the volume of books I read on a monthly basis, having one stick with me and recalling various sections of the book long after I read it (about a month ago) is, to me, impressive and tells me this was really a good book.I initially got this book during a Kindle free promotion and, as I write this review, the price is now $5.38 in the Amazon Kindle store - you will certainly get a lot more than $5.38 in entertainment value if you get this one!

I have found a new favorite author! I really enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to get started on the next! While this is still fiction, it's still based on the actual Bible story, so if you have trouble keeping everything in line of who's who in the Bible, this will help! It also made me realize that they went through similar conflicts and struggle as we do today.It can be hard to find good books on Amazon at times, this one is well worth the read.

Often time reading the Old Testament it is hard to piece everything together. Lynn Austin does a fantastic job of weaving the biblical text from the account of the kings and the prophets along with Jewish traditions that brings it to life.My only complaint would be her use of Yahweh. I understand her reasoning to differentiate the One True God from all the other gods, but for Orthodox Jews that is a sacred name of God. It was the very personal name of God given to Moses (translated as I AM in most English versions of the Bible). Jews only spoke that name 1 time a year during Yom Kippur and even then only by the high priest while praying in the Temple in the Holiest of Holies. I wish she had chosen from El ("God"), Eloah ("God"), Elohim ("Gods"), Shaddai ("God Almighty"), Ehyeh, and Tzevaot ("[of] Hosts") instead to refer to God.That one issue aside, I found this to be very entertaining and enriched my understanding of how those historical events unfolded and how it may have impacted those who walked through it.

Lynn Austin has written some of the best Bible-historical novels I've seen. My entire family - husband and all our grown kids -read this series, one after the other. "Are you almost finished with that one? I can't wait to get into it!". I learned more about the Old Testament during this period from this series than in all my 35 years as a serious Bible-reading Christian. It's eye-opening on so many levels that it functions as a sort of devotional as well - I was able to identify areas in my own life that needed improvement, became more aware of things to avoid in my own life, and was, again and again, impressed by God's amazing involvement in the lives of individuals, all throughout history, as well as in my own. I would think a complete atheist would enjoy these too, if they like historically accurate dramas that include intense relationships, terrible adversity, romance (not at all overt, but beautifully portrayed) and an overall uplifting story. Give me ten starts and I'll click all ten of them for this series. Most libraries have them, too!

This book based upon the Old Testament accounts rivets the reader and brings the Biblical story to life. This is the second time I've read this book, but love it more than ever. Definitely five stars!

When you compare the Bible and this book, it is like you are right there with them at the same time. It is so nice to think about what they could have been thinking or feeling so many years ago. This book makes all of them so human but still I can't wait to see some of them in Heaven. Wow! When I put the book down, I find myself reading it over and over again because it is such a fascinating read from beginning to end. But, I have to go on to see what Hezekiah does next, as king. God is Good. Well written.

I live the fact that it's nearly from the pages of my Bible, but don't think that means it's tame! Gotta run ..... off to buy book #2!

Though Austin has to fill in details the Bible leaves out (and gives background to characters not disclosed in the Bible), this story does take the reader back in time. I found it fascinating how Austin reveals the rationalization leaders took in their journeys of compromise towards idolatry. This book isn't just the story of King Ahaz but of his sons, wife, relatives, advisors facing fear, Assyrians and other enemies, submission, heartache, hope and resolve. I truly recommend this book with no compensation but the enjoyment I received by reading Gods and Kings.

This is a book about the origins of Islam and where the religion of Muhammad is taking the world. From his well-grounded Christian perspective, the author traces the source of Islamic tenets in the pagan beliefs and practices of the polytheistic Arabs, beliefs that Muhammad never completely broke with even though he was a self-proclaimed champion of pure monotheism. Muhammad formulated a concept of God that was influenced by Arab moon worship, and his Allah was a species of moon God—a demonic God. Given the evidence of the evils Muhammad perpetrated on the peoples of his day and age, Stortroen believes Muhammad was a shaman who let himself become possessed by an evil force—demonic possession—that turned him into a “vicious, cruel man, who instituted a religion of violence by the sword with little regard for human rights, especially to women.” That demonic force has been transmitted from generation to generation for 14 centuries and is a force that is growing today.Stortroen’s Biblical knowledge is impressive, but a reader with little grounding in the Bible or knowledge of Judaic and Islamic literature may find the early chapters somewhat daunting. Less so with the later chapters, which expose Muhammad’s degradation of women, his practice of jihad against anyone who opposed him, and other now institutionalized ills of Islam. The chapter on the Crusades is revealing, as it debunks myths and lies that circulate in the West about them and lays the cause squarely at the feet of Islam. The Crusades were reactions to Islamic expansionism and were ultimately successful in stopping its spread into Europe, though the Byzantine Empire ultimately succumbed and was supplanted by the Ottoman Empire. This Turkish caliphate claimed leadership over all of Islam and spread it with brute force for centuries. That leadership ultimately collapsed, but now a new Islamic caliphate is emerging. In the concluding chapters, Stortroen takes the reader where he may not eagerly go: into the thick of End Time prophesy, both Christian and Islamic. He is pessimistic about the outcome for the world as it attempts to deal with the demonic force that underlies Islam. “Could history repeat itself in regard to a resurgent worldwide Islamic (read that to mean demonic) Empire?” he asks. This is not an easy book, but people who give it a close read will come away with valuable insights into the origin, nature, and goals of Islam.

I was impressed by the author's approach to the analysis of the sacred Black Stone that all Muslims are obliged to pay homage to. The mysterious origins of this Black Stone were researched from numerous angles including the ties to the prevailing stone cults of ancient Arabia. The conclusion to this mystery was astounding.The author writes from a Christian historian's perspective, yet derives a majority of the material from original religious and historical sources to justify his positions, which I thought was refreshing. Rather than assume Islam has the core beliefs of the Christians and Jews, the contrary is illustrated. The religion of Islam is shown to deny virtually every major tenet of Christianity concerning salvation.The account of Muhammad's horrific cave experience with its uncanny parallels to shamanism was quite illuminating. The historical rise of Islam into a superpower, and the several times it almost conquered the world, astonished me. The era of the Crusades was especially insightful and shed important light on the numerous myths which have been circulated by historical revisionists.The relevance to biblical prophecy was made evident by the fact that all the nations Christ opposes in the End Times are now dominated by Islam. Many parallels between the Islamic Mahdi and the biblical Antichrist were detailed. The author masterfully covers two curious questions that arise from the biblical record:1. Why is the "Mark of the Beast" on the right hand or the forehead? He explains that Muhammad had a superstitious fixation with the right side, or actions involving the right hand, which still dictate the practices of modern Islamic followers.2. Why does the Antichrist from the biblical accounts choose to behead those who oppose his rule? A possible answer offered by the author may lie in the fact that the future Mahdi/Antichrist of the revived Caliphate would continue the 1400 year-old pattern of Islamic execution by beheading. Numerous parallels in relation to biblical prophecy regarding the Last Days and the Islamic caliphate were put forth as a credible hypothesis.I recommend this book to anyone, including scholars, who wish to add to their knowledge of comparative religion. Despite not being updated since 2002, this is a highly useful book for peri- and menopausal women. It is best for women who want to get the info on what the heck is going on and how to feel better ASAP without lot of psychological or spiritual "woo" but with a great amount of useful info organized for efficiently determining what to do to feel better.This is what I wish New Menopausal Years (the Wise Woman Way) had been, and it has a tighter focus and utility than Menopause For Dummies. It has a wealth of information delivered objectively but in a nicely targeted way (with TONS of citations and references). It explains what estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and the androgens do in the body, and what symptoms you can have when any or all of these hormones go haywire during perimenopause or after menopause has officially begun. It gives you an idea of what is to come after your periods have stopped and it has a thorough and clear glossary of terminology and chapters on self-care, nutrition, herbal remedies, and hormone replacement therapy, as well as an index and a list of resources. It just has a few flaws, which I'll get to.The author has a conversational writing style which is very easy to read. His recommended treatment protocols include herbs, homeopathics, and prescription conventional hormone replacement therapy (depending on what works best for your menopause type) as well as chapters on self-care and nutrition. In other words, he is treatment agnostic and advocates whatever works best for the patient, without bias for or against conventional medicine and with a sober acknowledgement that while there are risks with HRT, they must be balanced with the benefits. But it doesn't overwhelm you with information. The author uses example patients to describe the different types of menopause, which is a useful convention for elucidating the problems and the solutions. Once I found my type and read that section and the description of common symptoms, it *really* rang true and captured the misery of the symptoms I've been having, why, and what to do about it.As a registered nurse, I really appreciate the author's ability to use jargon free language to explain how the endocrinology of sex and adrenal hormones works (or doesn't) during perimenopause and menopause, without overwhelming the reader with information. This book addresses the specifics of what is causing your symptoms and how to relieve them without being either as wide-ranging or as boring as Menopause For Dummies, and it isn't loaded with New Age "woo" like New Menopausal Years (The Wise Woman Way) -- perhaps because it is more tightly focused. I also really appreciated the citations and references; they make it feel like the book is a real reference and not just mostly the author's opinions.In a way, the closest and best comparison to this book that I can think of is not a menopause book, it's a book on treatment of the different types of depressions (the book Beyond Prozac -- which lamentably had only one edition), because of the way both authors are treatment agnostic and recommend what combination of conventional medicine &/or supplements &/or nutrition works best for the different types.However, there are a few caveats.1. Scoring the menopausal type questionnaire is very confusing (as evidenced by the many reviews that say just that). I understand the author developed this tool to help women figure out whether their symptoms are related to low, normal, or high levels of each hormone (estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone), and therefore that sort of requires a matrix or spreadsheet to figure out the scoring. And my impression, from how that section of the book is written, is that he tried to simplify it as much as possible. But still, I had to try scoring my questionnaire three times before I was relatively confident I got it right. It's just kind of confusing and difficult, and since that is the main point of the book before you can figure out how to treat your type, I feel like that should be less confusing, clearer, and have less potential for terminally frustrating the reader.Just keep trying. It took me 3 tries before I was confident I got it right.2. The book refers one to the author's web site for various resources, such as an "automated' version of the questionnaire, and a list of labs that do direct to consumer saliva testing. But the author's web site is confusing and difficult to navigate, so I never found the automated version of the questionnaire. (By automated, I thought he meant that you fill the questionnaire out on the web site, and it scores it FOR you. I never found that. All I could find was the questionnaire in PDF format for download. And I could never find the list of labs that do saliva testing.The web site needs a major overhaul by a professional web designer. The current web site looks like a cross between a boilerplate online shopping presence and the mid-term project for a college level web design course. Not that impressive. There is a lot of useful information, but it is not well organized, requiring the end user to do a lot of hunting around and clicking through, and there are no 'breadcrumbs' and few navigation bars to help you go back to where you were (aside from the Back button in your browser).It is also designed to sell you his herbal and enzyme supplement blends, which are unbelievably expensive compared to what you can find at other much easier-to-use online herb/supplement shops. The entire web site was a real disappointment after the book and makes the author look like he's just shilling for his own products -- which was not the feel I got from the book at all. It doesn't invalidate the info from the book... it just sort of cheapens it.3. The saliva testing question: given that hormone levels fluctuate on a circadian rhythm, the utility of saliva testing versus serum (blood) testing is questionable. Why not test urine for levels of hormones, then? I mean, that is reliable enough -- and quantitative! -- to indicate pregnancy! (Saliva testing is also not the gold standard and insurances companies usually won't cover it... another reason why the FDA does not approve saliva testing for hormone baseline or monitoring, though they don't prevent you from getting it yourself.)~~~Aside from these caveats, this is still the best book on menopause I've found. As with most things, you have to take what works for you and leave the rest. But this book -- if you can use the questionnaire and the scoring formula correctly, which is not guaranteed -- will arm you with the information you need to take non-prescription herbs or homeopathic remedies to help with your peri- or menopausal symptoms. It will also tell you what herbs to avoid.

This book was the best thing that ever happened to me during my menopause. I just gave the book to someone else, and realized I had never left a review. If the author gets to read these reviews. I would like to tell him how grateful I was for his book, and how much the information helped me. Don't be put off by the semi-negative reviews about the test any difficulty you have getting it all scored correctly will lead you to information that will help you immensely.

Absolutely a wonderful book. Very informative for women going thru this stage in their life. Comes with a questionaire and shows you what type you are and all the options of what you can do. I highly recommend this book to all women as it is a great resource and can be taken with you to your doctor for further help and treatment. This is my 5 th doctor trying to treat this problem as with most doctors they seem to treat them all the same. . This book explains one treatment doesnt fit all women and by taking this book to your doctor, you are opening their eyes and educating them. After 5 long suffering years of symptoms, finding this book and a new doctor I am on the road to feeling myself again. I found this book by accident while doing research online and was the best accident to ever happen.

This book became irresistible when a large, well-illustrated article about it appeared in the New York Times ("Inside the Black Budget" by William J. Broad) on April 1. The book came in the mail today. It is very good. Folks who are interested in the subject might really like it, but, as the spread in the Times indicates, there is a general audience also for a look behind the green door if the presentation is accessible. In the case of this modest book, it is small in size and just right in length. The author, Trevor Paglen, states that this book is not intended to be a reference for historians and with that important caveat, I recommend it highly. Mr. Paglen, a candidate for a PhD in geography at UC Berkeley, treats the subject with respect and seems to have enjoyed himself, as do the patch designers and the people who approved those designs. His next book (and his thesis), says the Times, is about secret bases and "undisclosed locations" in the US. It is called Blank Spots on the Map: The Dark Geography of the Pentagon's Secret World and will be published by Dutton next February (2009). While you're waiting, have a look at Top Secret Tourism: Your Travel Guide to Germ Warfare Laboratories, Clandestine Aircraft Bases and Other Places in the United States You're Not Supposed to Know About by Harry Helms, which is also recommended.

I found myself gaping as I read this book, by turns astonished that classified personnel could get away with having a sense of humor on the job and cackling madly at the inside jokes. There appears to be a rich language of symbolism in the patches' patterns, and many an afternoon could be whiled away by the reader attempting to piece it together. I've already recommended this book to several friends, and I can't recommend it highly enough to anyone curious about military heraldry or black projects.

What a great book! If you are a conspiracy nut, military historian, believe in aliens, collect military artifacts, are into aviation, or any of the above, this may be a really fun book for you!This is not a dense or didactic book, but rather, it is a picture book with a paragraph or two about each entry. A good supplement to a more serious collection, or a unique coffee table book.

I love this fascinating little book. It is a tiny fact-filled volume, with a patch from a different top-secret test flight or satellite reconnaissance unit on each page. Where possible, the author describes what the patch symbolism represents and where the unit was located.This is a thrilling little book for anyone that was involved in these or similar "black" programs themselves, and maybe even more intriguing for civilians. Not the dimensions of the book - it is very small; the patches are photographed at approximately life size and each page is not much bigger than each patch.This book focuses mainly on Air Force and NRO secret units. I'd love to see one of these for military intelligence and NSA units.

The Black Projects that are covered in this book are those that you would expect, not the ones I was hoping for. Almost all of the patches are from now declassified projects that took place between 1980-2000 and they are vastly in the field of aeronautics. Trevor Paglen gets about as close as any one could I suppose without being destroyed, and for that I respect his work. I guess I was hoping for more glimpses, more of a deeper overall survey of the special projects world. I certainly had my hopes too high for such a tiny book with such a narrow focus. If he had added more conjecture to entertain the reader he would have reduced its believability. This book is worth reading if you can borrow a copy (it will take you a couple hours to read), but it's only worth buying if you are a military historian or are an avid patch collector.

A great summary coffee table book that introduces the esoteric symbols, language & mythology of the top secret black world. Patches of squadrons that, supposedly don't exist, a lot are some that have been declassified, but a great view into the cult ure :)

The book itself is alright, the patches which are supposed to represent "black op" projects are well presented and each has a story to go along with them. The problem is that there is no way independently verify the stories.I recently had the opportunity to listen to a presentation by the author, it was based on this book but also covered his other books (which IMHO are much more interesting and easier to independently verify) which were written on government rendition programs and secret bases.The book overall is good but the stories sound more like vet stories you would hear in the VFW over a couple of pints.

This is a fun and unique book and worth picked up for any patch or military enthusiast. This in the only books I have seen written on military morale patches. The cover has an actual embroidered patch affixed to it. It is a bit out of date and deals almost exclusively with Air Force unit's, the patches are good and the write ups are pretty well done. I would like to see a second version and would love to see this as the first in a series. But I don't know if the military patch collector is a big enough demographic to support it. That said if you find this at all fascinating or interesting its worth picking up.

Shows the way this country actually cared for it's soil. Very insightful.Best describes how to reincoporate plant residue back into the soil so less has to be bought (as far as fertilizers ) to have a functional soil, for optimal plant health.
