Fifteen brilliant essays about diverse aspects of language, including sign language, esperanto, the almost dead language of Manx, Tammet's introduction to Lithuanian, his mastery of French, and much more. In every essay Tammet familiarizes himself extensively with the subject. Having synesthesia and a wide-ranging memory he easily picks up foreign languages. He befriends Les Murray, an Australian poet, and translates Murray's poetry into French. In his essay about the French novel, La Disparition, which entirely omits the letter "e", Tammet pulls the same trick, and it's barely noticeable.

Purchased this book due to notable reviews which I no longer follow. I believed to be a history source of word origins but it is nothing but a self appraising autobio!

Daniel Tammet’s world is judgment-free. He observes and absorbs. He is fascinated by the tiny, and digs until he finds it. It blooms in his hands, taking on all kinds of attributes. He assigns connections and relationships to ever-smaller units of his observations. He delights in his manufactured cosmos of letters, numbers and colors. But there it ends.He is an interesting character. In his first public speech, he recited the value of pi. To 22,000 places. From memory. Over a five hour period. His particular flavor of autism has given him great powers. But very little of this book is about him.Every Word Is A Bird We Teach To Sing is a survey of interpersonal communications. There are chapters on telephone etiquette, the deaf, OuLiPo (fun exercises with words and letters) and various foreign languages. Tammet likes words and he has long chains of them (with translation) that he appreciates for their sound or their spelling or their power. So he is especially appreciative of poetry and its multipurposed words. He cites many snippets of poems, translating when necessary.But it is just a survey. He draws no conclusions. He does not leverage or even connect. The endless chains of foreign words are totally forgettable. Everything he writes about is covered in far greater depth elsewhere. And it is all much less interesting than his own stories of adapting to society, for example, teaching English to Lithuanian women at the age of 19 - knowing no Lithuanian at all. So the best chapters are the first three – about him. The rest are linked in that he discusses means of interpersonal communication. But don’t ask why, because he doesn’t say. Somewhat disappointed in this selection. I thought I would enjoy reading this book, but find it tedious at times...and a bit too 'religious'. It seems the excerpt i read on Amazon seemed more interesting at the time. And now I have regretted the purchase. I don't think I will read to finish this book, but keep it on my pile to try again from time to time.

What I have read so far seems insightful. I care for my Mother with Alzheimer's Disease and was looking for anything that will help prepareme for the time I am without her.

A well written account by Amy Hollingsworth. She fills in the answers to so many questions when dealing with loss of a loved one. This book helped me move toward acceptance and go on in peace with my life.

I have to say this book was quite a disappointment to me. I found it hard to follow the author as she seemed to be all over the place and I just couldn't make the connections she seemed to be wanting to make throughout the book. The stories she tells of her relationship with people, for example, Mr. Rogers (from the children's TV series) were nice but didn't seem to help me follow the path to the subject taken on according to the title of the book. Having recently lost my Mother, I guess I was looking for some comfort, and for the 'gifts she may have left behind' - but this book did not help me with either. Sorry, but I would not recommend this book.

In "Gifts of Passage," Amy Hollingsworth has done a beautiful job of talking about the gifts the dying leave us in the form of life lessons, final gestures, and other gifts we might have a harder time recognizing.Her observations will resonate with anyone who has lost a loved one, and you'll likely see a bit of yourself in her and in the vivid personalities she describes throughout the book. Hollingsworth mentions that if you're supposed to be with someone when they die, it seems to have a way of working itself out; she cites hospice workers who talk about people literally delaying their own deaths until a relative can arrive. Other times, someone will keep vigil for days at the bedside of a loved one, only to have them slip away in the brief span when the person goes out to stretch their legs or get a cup of coffee. It gave me an insight into why my stepfather had died alone, which I found very comforting, even 20 years after it happened."Gifts of Passage" is personal without ever seeming like an excersize in self-therapy. Amy Hollingsworth talks about her own insecurities and difficulties in her relationship with her father, but never in a way that seems over the top. Her writing reminds me very much of Henri J.M. Nouwen's in its vulerability, its depth, and in her ability to describe people in a vivid and three-dimensional manner.I was deeply touched by her previous book, "The Simple Faith of Mr. Rogers," detailing her friendship with Fred Rogers in the last years of his life. "Gifts of Passage" is equally touching, and even more personal.

This is a quote from chapter 8, The Last Thing, page 58 in Amy Hollingsworth, priceless, book--- The Gifts of Passage.The above quote, in my opinion, is the central theme of The Gifts of Passage.I first learned of The Gifts of Passage when I completed reading Ms. Hollingsworth book The Simple Faith of Mister Rogers. Amy's web page announced her second book; The Gifts of Passage was available in book stores.Almost from the beginning of reading The Simple Faith of Mister Rogers I discovered I really enjoyed Amy's style of writing; It made me feel comfortable and relaxed and eager to continue reading (and at 73 years of age, feeling comfortable and relaxed is a priority of mine). Having been "hooked" on Ms. Hollingsworth's writing style, I couldn't wait to purchase her latest book The Gifts of Passage. At the very top of page 4 in The Gifts of Passage Amy writes: "That was the best way I knew how to describe it; my father has given me a gift of passage, a gift that marked his passage. Now I had something to call it, even if I didn't yet know what it meant."Immediately following that last sentence above, under the sub title of Two Legends Amy writes of two legends, one from the book Where The Red Fern Grows and the other from the Chinese concerning an invisible red tread (page 5).Just five pages into the book and she (Amy) writes: "The Chinese believe that an invisible red thread binds those who are destined to be together."Almost instantly after reading that sentence (above), it reminded me of the concluding two chapters of The Simple Faith of Mister Rogers. DIFFICULT TIMES is the title of chapter 8. In that chapter Amy writes of The Nature Of Loss, The Gift of Allowing Others To Grieve, In Loss An Overshadowing Presence, and Love: Stronger Than Anything. If you read The Gifts of Passage you will discover Amy uses similar words and phrases, as those above,Chapter 9 is titled; HEADING TOWARD HEAVEN. It is in that last chapter (9) that Amy introduces us to her beloved father.To me, that's when I discovered where the invisible red thread, which Amy wrote about on page 5 of The Gifts of Passage it started its binding process. As Ms. Hollingsworth continued to write The Gifts of Passage, like a highly trained and experience brain surgeon, she skillfully and carefully stitched her stories together with that invisible red thread.I read The Gifts of Passage twice. Each time I read that book, I was so thankful I first read Amy's book The Simple Faith of Mister Rogers. To me, The Simple Faith of Mister Rogers is a prologue to The Gifts of Passage. Many years ago I read in one of my wife's cooking magazines that at the dinner table if one asks for the pepper, the proper thing to do is to pass the salt too. The salt and pepper are like a marriage, you can't have one without the other. That's the way I feel about The Gifts of Passage; to gain the maximum value from that book, one needs to read The Simple Faith of Mister Rogers --- first.To prove how strongly I feel about this matching of the two books, I sent my three adult daughters, a member of my church who recently experienced the death of his beautiful wife, and a member of my adult Bible Sunday school class --- I gave all of them both of Amy's books. And I strongly encouraged all of them to read The Simple Faith of Mister Rogers first if they wanted to gain the greatest understanding and value from The Gifts of Passage.Amy Hollingsworth writes with great love, sensitivity, passion, compassion, care, empathy, and understanding. Edition: I found commentary very useful (though often distracting). If you are not a professional - you'll appreciate the commentaries and epilogue - read it first? It's very inspiring.Book: "You either get the idea in the first five minutes, or you don't get it at all", commented Warren Buffet in the epilogue. I would add - you don't necessarily need to read all 550 pages, but you must read through the idea of value investing - and it will change your way of looking at the world. I always felt confused and amazed by listening to all the ridiculous fuzz that comes from the Wall Street through TV and the internet. The book explains why.Several rules of thumbs I noted into my keep:- Investor buys the business [based on its price/value], speculator buys the stock [based on an absurd believe that he can foresee where the stock price will go].- The best way to earn adequate return without any trouble whatsoever is to invest into cheap (low maintenance cost) indexes; use dollar averaging (buy every month instead of once at a random point of time) for smoothing the luck involved.- For enterprising investor (willing to spend much more time), look for a diversified list of bargain issues (at least 30 issues, business values (i.e. net current asset and other related metrics) is below market cap)- During the bubble, hot industries and companies are getting overpriced. That could only be financed from somewhere. Partially that money are coming from well established old economy companies that lose the appeal. Thus, invest in such old economy companies while bubble grows, as soon as the bubble burst - undervalued companies would rise back.- Don't ever buy IPOs! (See chapter for compelling arguments)- Don't consider companies that do not pay dividends. Dividends - money firm pays you for providing capital, they belong to you. They cut a piece for reinvestment - payout ratio. If firm doesn't pay dividends - invest all into growth so you could profit later - that's a speculation. Moreover stock price would be more volatile because it should now rely on future rather than current prospects.- When gambling - bet on a single chip to maximize the payoff (roulette $1 to $35 payoff at 1/37 chance). When investing - diversify: each investment must have a margin of safety, the more diversified portfolio - the less likely that all will fail. You are a roulette house now who earns with each turn of the wheel.

No complaints of the book itself, but the Kindle edition of it is bad. The book has a number of tables in it: they are all rotated 90 degrees and in such a low resolution that they are basically just unreadable pixels.

So far into my career, this book has un-ironically been one the greatest investments I have made so far.This is a great book for anyone who is interested in introducing themselves into the world of investing, or wants to hone their skills and better themselves. Although, while a great book I would not recommend it to anyone who doesn't have the discipline to treat this book as a college textbook. Annotate, take notes, and create a guide. If you want to start taking investing seriously and want to begin practicing the discipline of self education, this is the book for you.Best of luck to everybody.

This probably is one of the greatest investing books ever written, but it suffers from two flaws: 1) like all such books, it could be condensed into about 20 pages. The supporting evidence could be put in an appendix for those who want to see it. 2) it is very dated. I was 13 when Graham published his last edition, and I just can't get excited reading something that talks about 1970 like it was last year. The commentary by Zweig, widely criticized, is actually the saving grace. His writing style is more current and he brings things up-to-date, sort of, but even his commentary misses the Great Recession. This would all be much better if it could be taken out of its temporal context and summarized more generally. Charts that make a point using data from decades ago is okay, but the body of the book is so immersed in old dates that it just feels, well, out of date!

In it's time, I'm sure "The Intelligent Investor" was a blockbuster success, written by one of the foremost investment geniuses of all time. I'm also sure that most of the investment fundamentals outlined in the book still apply IN THEORY, but the book is so outdated, despite revisions, that it was of no use to me. Most of the examples, charts, graphs and illustrations were limited to industrial, brick & mortar businesses of the 60's and 70's. It's an entirely different world and investment mindset today. The "defensive investment" financial guidelines listed in chapter 14 were, in this day and time, completely unrealistic. Try finding a handful of stocks with a price to book ratio of less than 1.5, or companies with a recommended current ratio (current assets / current liabilities) of at least 2:1. Today, most companies with financial statistics like these are not growing AT ALL. Furthermore, the book is not up-to-date enough to guide the investor through the dizzying array of valuable online stock screening/research websites that are available. The book is so outdated, the Internet is barely, if at all, even mentioned in the book, much less covered as the ultimate stock research tool of all time. I'm now retired, and I wish I had read this book in 1972 when I graduated from college, but it was of no use to me today. Sorry !

As a former gallery owner, museum curator, teacher and advisor to a Masters Museum Management program, this was the book I needed so many times over the years. It is the definitive guide for what they don't teach artists in Art School. Alix Sloan gets practical and focused and this is what so many artists need to jump start their career. It's not the teachers beating the artist down or the family propping the artist up, it's real life guidance to up the odds of potential success in a somewhat haphazard and uncertain art world. With one chapter devoted to recommendations from artists, gallerists and curators, she is giving you the answers. Now it becomes time for the artist to implement her tips.

This is a book that I, as an artist, will have to keep on my desk at all times for reference. There is so much valuable and good advice packed in that it will take some time to absorb it all. Alix Sloan has written a comprehensive guide to starting up or reinvigorating your art career with many helpful tips. Sloan has added a very useful section of resources at the end that will come in handy for me for years to come as well as a terrific section which includes advice from many very successful artists and gallerists. I highly recommend this book.

As a former gallery owner, this is a book that I can appreciate so much. Alix Sloan manages to decode the very confounding art world, and spare artists a lot of time and probably a couple career panic attacks by distilling her years of experience and funneling it into this must read guide. They don't teach you this stuff in school! And it reads like an outline, with points clearly listed, so it's a quick read and also easy to go back and refer to. For the artist it means less time chasing your own tail and more time creating work.

This book is a pleasure to read. The information is meaningful and engaging. It is a must read for emerging or moderately established artist. As a gallerist, I often find great artist unprepared for the exhibition. There is far more involved than just creating the art. Everyone can learn something useful in "Launching Your Art Career." It reads like having a conversation with a good friend.

Interesting mix of articles/chapters on different facets of the business of art. I used this as a companion text for graduate students in a course on the business of art. It's a mix, and a few chapters didn't jive with our experience as creatives in business....but overall the book is a good resource for those in the creative field and is priced very well.

If you need a step by step, nuts and bolts, artistic and business guide about getting started in the art world or a refresher to get you back on track, I recommend this one. Not just practical but inspirational reading and to-do's to get your work seen outside of your studio by as many people as possible.

I am a fine artist who has lived in and shown my works in the art worlds of NYC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, VA and Chicago over the last 2.5 decades. In my career I have read many books and websites on "How to succeed in the art business". They are usually either of the sort that offers specious advice of a far to general manner to be useful or they partake in the cult-of-personality pop lit genre whose purpose is to instill in the reader a sense of the potential glamourous possibilities available in artist as a career choice instead of laying out the realities of what is a life long and difficult one requiring serious sacrifice and dedication. This being said, Alix Sloan's book offers concrete advice for the serious artist that can really help both the emerging and established artist in choices that are of a daily concern. Her book is a great starting point for young artists who want to get off on the right footing in a career that requires life long dedication and careful step-by-step consideration of a myriad of diverse details. - Nikolai Soren Goodich

About the Author

Chris Buck, President of Get It Done Consulting (www.getitdoneconsulting.net), has his Masters in Exercise and Sport Psychology and is a Certified Consultant and member of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP). He has consulted with professional and amateur athletes alike, implementing mental conditioning programs in a wide variety of sports, including lacrosse, golf, tennis, soccer, basketball, track/field, crew, fencing, hockey, and baseball. Coach Buck works with multiple NCAA Division I lacrosse programs as a Sport Psychology Consultant to the team as well as a Goalie Psychology Specialist. He is also the Goalie Psychology Specialist for G3 Lacrosse. He wrote the Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 goalie coaching certification materials for US Lacrosse. He has worked with goalies all over the country and Canada who have committed to, or are playing at, elite programs such as Johns Hopkins, Syracuse, Drexel, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Georgetown, Villanova, Rutgers, UVA, UPenn, Dartmouth, Union, Tufts, etc. as well as working with several MLL professional goalies. Chris is the Mental Coach and Goalie Specialist for the 2016 Brown Men's Lacrosse team and currenlty working with the Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team. He was the goalie specialist with Avon Old Farms and New Canaan, CT High School, as well as the Head Coach of the Desert Mountain High School women’s lacrosse team, leading them to the 2008 Arizona state semi-finals. Additionally, he coached the Arizona State All-Star Team in the Women’s National Tournament in Baltimore, MD (’08). As a mental conditioning coach at the IMG Academies (Bradenton, FL), Coach Buck consulted with athletes attending the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy, David Leadbetter Golf Academy, and the IMG Basketball, Baseball, and Soccer Academies. Chris grew up and played lacrosse in Wilton, CT, winning two state championships during his time there and finished his four-year high school career with a 46-1 record as the starting goalie. After high school, he played lacrosse at Ithaca College.

Was hoping to meet the author at a goalie camp in Avon, CT last month. Didn’t happen. The book is well written and truly a must read for any lacrosse goalie, with an emphasis on the teenage or beginner lax goalie! Going back to the same camp next year. Hope the author is present! My son did a school project on this book, and received a stellar grade! My son doesn’t normally like to read. This book changed that! Definitely a recommended read for any lacrosse goalie.

Chris does a great job in explaining what else a goalkeeper needs to think about and do to expand his/her game. I have heard Chris speak about his topic and he gets players young and older to believe in his thought process helping them become better players both physical and especially mental. Positive psychology in practice and in competition along with a positive attitude and thinking go a long way. Nice Job on the book.

This book helped way more than I expected. I bought because I was tired of feeling angry and critical of my family all the time (that’s what they said and they were right) and fighting. It helped me with that in fact by the time I was about hallway through I was already seeing the improvements just using the 3R stuff and others were too. What I didn’t expect was how much the book would help in other areas especially with stress and communication problems and with just feeling more peaceful. The chapters on how anger relates to thinking and beliefs changed a lot of the way I look at things, and the stuff on acceptance even more so. Really I think they should change the name because this is more than a book about managing anger it’s really a manual for living and being balanced. The book was easy to read and understand and it was enjoyable. They back up their points with a lot of research and stories from their work (Dr. Puff and Dr. Seghers are private practice Psychologists). I had a lot of interesting conversations based on this book especially with my husband and teenage daughters. Gets you thinking. I highly recommend it for anyone who has anger problems or who just wants to be happier or have more self-control.

A must read for anyone looking to improve their life! I was skeptical because I'm not an "aggressive" or "angry" person, but after reading the intro to this book I was immediately captivated by the realization that everyone needs to channel their frustrations, anger, negativity, etc. Everyone get's angry, but it can be a completely positive opportunity to drive success. Great book for anyone looking to improve their life: relieve stress, reduce frustrations, remain calm, and manage the day to day potential blow ups. I really like the style of this book, it's a quick, easy page turner - lot's of practical applications, bullet points and critical facts to drive personal change. Dr. Seghers and Dr. Puff have a wonderful way of relating facts, solutions and relaying historic, foundational information to keep things into perspective.

A book for everyone to read. Picked it up to help me understand the source and how do deal with others anger actions. It helped to prevent supporting someones situation and in returned help myself to be less impacted by their actions. Sadly enough this book is not read by all that could benefit from reading it. The examples though simple are so related to the real world.Worth the read.. Delivery is simple

great resource for anger management classes

Although I don't have anger problems, this book really helped me understand emotions and how to help control them. It helped me understand what kind of problems I would cause with a stubborn and negative attitude, and I really appreciate the time and effort that Dr.'s Puff and Segher put into this book--it really shows. There are examples that help explain their point, along with facts and scientific studies, etc. This book really helped me with the mental aspect of when I play sports; and I learned how to control my emotions better when I play.All in all this was a great book--even if you don't have anger problems, it's very interesting and helpful to learn about emotions, how to get them under control, and even turn your life around!

This is a must read if you know anyone who struggles with anger issues as it is a great guide to assist with recognizing and supporting an individual dealing with anger. Easy read....finished in 2 days. Thanks for writing this practical guide!
