I don't review a lot of books anymore, but this one got to me. There are lots of books written by people -- including me -- who had a hard time growing up. Abusive parents, poverty, oppression. War. There is a lot of awful stuff children endure.Trevor Noah endured all of it. Name something bad that a kid can experience and it probably happened to him. Born under apartheid, his existence was illegal. His birth was, as the title of his book suggests, a crime.As the child of a white father and a black mother under South Africa during apartheid, if he had been noticed by the authorities, they would have taken him from his family and put him ... somewhere. So merely surviving until the end of apartheid was no mean feat. Add to that extreme poverty, violence and life under the most oppressive, racist regime you can imagine. Actually, you may not be able to imagine it. I knew it was bad, but South Africa refined oppression into an art form.One of the other noteworthy things about this book was that I learned great deal about things I thought I already knew. I don't know if Noah intended it as a cautionary tale, but it is. Chilling.I didn't read the book. I listened to the audiobook because Noah reads it himself. He has a beautiful, melodic voice and a lovely cadence. It was a treat for my ears and my brain.You might think with all of this terrible stuff -- and some of it is really horrific -- that this would be an angry, possibly embittered man. But he isn't.He's funny when humor is possible. Even when he's serious, there is grace and wit -- plus a sweetness and generosity of spirit that's rather uplifting. I don't think I've ever said that about a book. It's not a word I use lightly. Trevor Noah is a rare person, able to appreciate the good stuff in his life and not obsess over the considerable amount of injustice he has experienced.I'm not usually a big fan of celebrity memoirs or autobiographies, but this is exceptional. If you have the patience, listen to it as an audiobook. Otherwise, consider reading it. He's a smart guy, a good writer, and an astute observer of humanity, government, politics, and relationships. Insightful, witty, and entertaining, I highly recommend it.

There is a genius in comedy that allows us to encounter devastating truths through the protective lens of laughter.The heroine of the book is Noah's mother, a feisty lady with a solid rock faith, a gal who snubs her nose at things that don't make sense. She makes mistakes, but always out of love. She takes huge risks but somehow Jesus is always there to catch her mid-fall.Noah was "naughty as s***" and a challenge to raise, but never hateful or mean. He learned to navigate Apartheid society's complex system that divided people in to three groups: black, white, and colored. How one was categorized was senseless. Japanese were put into the 'white' slot but Chinese into the 'colored'."The genius of Apartheid was convincing people who were the overwhelming majority to turn on each other. Apart hate, is what is was."Noah was 'colored' with a 'black' Xhosa African mother and a 'white' Swiss father, his very existence implicating his parent's crime. Had the police discovered them, his parents would be sent to jail and Noah sent to an orphanage. He spent much of his life hidden away, indoors. His parents could not be seen together with him, and his mother had to even pretend he was not her child.Noah was "colored by complexion but not by culture." He spoke multiple languages, Xhosa and Zulu and Afrikaans, and English, could fit into most groups, but felt affiliated to black culture.The book is a series of episodic tales, thoughtfully constructed, saving the climax of his family history until the end of the book, after we have come to know and understand them."I saw the futility of violence, the cycle that just repeats itself, the damage that's inflicted on people that they in turn inflict on others. I saw, more than anything, that relationships are not sustained by violence, but by love."The book is funny but is more than a diversive read, it enlarges our understanding of the world. Noah offers an understanding of South African history, colonialism, and Apartheid that is engaging and relevant. He shares the important things he learned and offers them to us. We should listen. We should learn.

Wow...I started this book yesterday and could not put it down. As a new mom myself, I read most of it on my Kindle while either nursing or holding my son, which was fitting as this is such a tribute to his mom. As a long time viewer of the Daily Show, I started watching as Trevor took over from Jon Stewart and while I've always thought he does a good job, I had no idea the depth of character and experiences that were below the surface of those cute dimples! As is fitting to the Daily Show atmosphere, Trevor discusses difficult topics like race often, but I don't think I will ever watch a segment the same way again after reading his descriptions of what it was like to grow up under and during the fall of apartheid. And I keep thinking back to some of his impassioned pieces prior to the election with a whole new appreciation.But this review shouldn't be about his celebrity on the Daily Show. It stands alone as a remarkable memoir and a completely engaging story that will appeal to anyone who's felt like an outsider. He is a wonderful story teller, finding the right balance between relaying his experiences, weaving in the social atmosphere around it and doing it in such a way that even as an American reader, I was able to visualize the communities he was describing in rich detail. Additionally, he was able to explain aspects of a post apartheid world that not only clarify the plight of South Africans today but also shed light on some of the challenges we are facing here in the US. He has a unique perspective and a wonderful voice that I hope to hear more of in the future.

A nice overview of world literature for children in an engaging format. I was expecting to see some more coverage of contemporary fiction but the book seems to focus on representative works of various places and times. Definitely presented for an adult audience as the artists and editor take great delight in featuring unexpurgated versions of more familiar tales. Would recommend for an adult or mature teen reader with an interest in the comic book medium.

NOT FOR KIDS, though. Graphic sexual violence.

I've only recently become a fan of comic books, and normally when searching for another to purchase I try to find something that strikes me as different in terms of the story, characters, or illustrations. I came across The Graphic Canon of Children's Literature online and decided to order it both for the range of stories covered in the volume and because each story is illustrated by a different artist in their own unique style.When the book arrived I was not disappointed - it satisfied my desire for something visually appealing and my longing for diverse illustrations. The stories themselves are told in unique ways as well - some are told in comic-form with panels and speech bubbles while others may contain pictures with no words.I've really enjoyed this collection and am planning on purchasing the three volumes of The Graphic Canon of Literature in the future.

This is not a book for kids. It has artistic value but maybe not in a way you're expecting and for much of it, not for sitting down with the kids. There are a couple of stories that have nude figures or sexuality that most would not consider a kid's story, but I don't have a problem with that, just FYI. I read with my kids most nights when they were little. There is maybe 1/4 of the book I would sit down with them and expect them to enjoy. Some stories are just a few illustrations but without the story so you would need some other copy of the story to go with this. In others it is such a modernized version or "let's see how out there we can make this" that I doubt kids would enjoy it. Older teens and those into graphic novels seem to be the audience. There is some art here, as the gallery in the back shows, but some of the stories are done in a simplistic style that has none of the richness and fascination your kids would enjoy. Think Charlie Brown does Aesop's Fables. "How graphic novel fans would see kids stories" would be a more accurate name, and it does that well. For great children's literature and great art to draw them into it? There's only a little here.

I got this from the library and it had a lot of great information on more sommon and well known topics, however there were many diseases, of the eye and skin in particular that were not included, and left me back to googling. I'd say it's a great BASIC guide, and it has a comprehensive section of animal rights, rescue, health, etc organizations, but nothing specific that is going to help you find a job or training for a job. It's more of a basic, "summary" of types of animal careers. I would recommend it for younger teenagers wanting to see what each type of animal career consists of before entering training. It does not give schooling options for those without any animal rescue organizations, or animal rights groups in the area, not recommended online schooling for those that are not in an area where schooling is offered. I made a note of the index of organizations and that was pretty much the reason to check this book out. Although I'm sure you can find the same information online.

I bought this for my father for a gift. When it arrived I paged through and was very disappointed that some of the stories were very off color. Not what I expected from the title and the picture on the front. I ended up donating it to our local thrift store rather than pay to ship it back.

I thoroughly enjoyed the daily routines of farm life from Spring to Winter. No matter your occupation, an upbeat attitude makes all the difference to one's happiness and joy.

The textbook is ok, but there are better writings out there. Some theories and processes are not explained well. Mathematical equations are over complicated.

Great text. Current. Text is easy to understand unlike other graduate business texts that I had the misfortunate of having to use. Really happy!

One of the easier to read and follow textbooks for financial institutions.

The book took over 2 weeks to get to me (after classes started at my college by a long shot). Additionally, when I tried to return the product, the company would not field my questions, comments, inquiries, ANYTHING. I ordered on August 25th, didn't get the book until mid September, and then couldn't make ANY progress with processing my return or refund for another 3 weeks. I had to file a claim with Amazon to hear any news. It is now October and I am JUST hearing any information.Avoid SuperBookDeals at all cost if possible

Anyone facing losing a loved one and having to deal with settling an estate or trust should buy this book. I recommend getting a copy before you are faced with a loss that way you will clearly know what steps to follow before you are in the overwhelming emotional pain a death can bring. It is a very comprehensive guide covering every angle of this daunting task. This is a simply written and easy to understand. I highly recommend it.

Sadly I had to read this on my way down to a spare of the moment time. I was an executor and I had to know more about what the job meant and this book did a good job on informing me. Though I wish you had put "Probate" closer to the start of this book as I was confused on the many times you spoke about it during the book. I ended up reading it in way later chapters.This covers many things I had to deal with and was(is) a great source of information. Something every one should read before any issues arise in ones life, as it will help you to prepare the job before some one passes away. The book gives you knowledge in a lot of areas that would help you prevent headaches after loss. Such as ways to avoid "Probate". I do wish I had read this before hand. But it worked just as well after hand as well.Thank you for the book and your knowledge towards the subject.

Have only read excerpts from this book so far,but it has already helped me immensely. I felt lost and overwhelmed by the task of being Executor, but the book reduced it to human scale and laid a series of small, achievable tasks, Right off the bat, learned that the Estate was considered "small" and therefore qualified for a simplified probate process. That alone justified the purchase price!

My father in law died recently with a rather small and relatively uncomplicated Will, so my husband, who was named as the Executor, decided to try and Probate the Will without the use of a lawyer. That meant I would be the one handling all the work. I was a little worried, so I bought this book and read it before I agreed to undertake the task. (A really nice Amazon feature was that I was able to buy an add-on copy of the book in Kindle form for only an additional $2.99 so I was able to start reading it immediately.) The book was fabulous and gave me all the tools, and, therefore, the confidence to act on my own. I learned so much about the process of Estate Probating that I believe anyone with a few organizational skills (and a great deal of time and patience) can Probate a simple Will without a lawyer. Of course, I must warn you that this Estate had no outstanding debts, no real estate and only some IRA's, some cash accounts and a checking account. Moreover, I am not sure I will be able to do the Estate taxes or the final Income Tax when the time comes for that. so, I may need to hire a Tax Accountant for that part, although I have done my own taxes for over 40 years using paper and pencil, then Turbo Tax when that was invented. In sum, this is a great book.

My dad.s estate attorney quite honestly was nice, but not very helpful. I'm almost finished with my dads estate-it has been over a year since he passed. Due to family circumstances I was required to change from an agreed to supervised estate to unsupervised estate. If it wasn't for this book, I would not have known what needed to go to probate and what could be excluded. I made the personal inventory list as requested by the attorney-her fee is based on size of the estate. After I read the book, I realized that a good chunk of funds should not be included on the list based on how my dad set up a few accounts. I mentioned it to the attorney and we took it off the list going to be filed in court. I was a little annoyed about that and made sure I read ALL of the chapters that applied to us. Also explains tax forms that need to be filed for estate and deceased family member. I'm very lucky I knew where most of my dads paperwork was for items and passwords after he died. Even though I hope to live a long time, I'm going to get the NOLO book on organizing your affairs for my executor.

I found this book to be a great guide when dealing with the death of a loved one. and their estate. Most people don't know or even have an idea what is involved in handling and settling an estate. (I admit I didn't.) Even though I had an attorney to handle most aspects, this book provides insight written in terms that I could understand that I'm able to assist my attorney and understand the "why, how, where, what, etc" of what she is doing. It helps me understand why things took so long and what you can and can't do right away. I brought three books which were recommended and found that this book was the most helpful.I also found this book useful to put my affairs in order to help my executor with my estate so he doesn't run into some of the same problems I am running into.I would recommend this book to someone who is handling all aspects of an estate, some aspects of an estate or preplanning an estate.

A very essential book. Well written and it has appendices to provide some state specific information. The book does not replace a lawyer BUT, you will save many times over the purchase price if you read it before you visit the attorney. You will know the questions you want to ask and you will be well informed about the process. Most important, you will know your rights and obligations. This is really important if the "dearly departed" decided to make you a co-executor or if everybody does not always "play nicely together". The best advice in the book is probably that you have a right to "not play"; the author explains the various roles and duties. Buy it and read it BEFORE you need it.

My wife and I listened to this (sometimes) graphic description of the absolute moral decay of our society's morals and intend to have our grown children who are parents listen to it. We both felt that anyone who disagrees with this book is pretty much duped by the very problem this country has caved to--the brain washed moral relativism preached by Hollywood and those who lack intelligence levels above the waist. Anyone who takes a birds-eye view as to where we're headed as a culture can't deny we've taken a nose dive--and it has affected everything from the economy to the destruction of the family. The leftist "free pass anything goes" sex frenzy is evidence enough Mr. Shapiro is spot-on with the causes of the problems of how the cancer of immorality is ruining our society, and I'm thrilled to see someone who has the guts to call a spade a spade with regard to the utter nonsense and sophistry of sexual perversion in all its forms. We are recommending the book to everyone we know.
