I LOVE this book. I wish it was available before my my children's father died. If I had the chance to purchase this when we first realized how serious their dad's illness was, it would have better prepared my kids for what to expect when he died. There is no way to completely prepare for the death of a parent but this book helps tremendously. The author provides useful insight and breaks down the steps and emotions of grief. Hearing what other kids/teens have gone through helped my kids feel normal. Seeing others come through this awful experience gives hope. There are phases of grief and it is so different for kids. They lose a caretaker, teacher, advocate, someone to hug them, play with them and listen to them. It's so much harder for kids. This is a great book! I wish it would have come out sooner. I recommend it for families with an ill parent so it can help prepare the kids too. It's easy to read so isn't overwhelming.

What a wonderful book. Wish it was available when I was a child/teen since I lost my father at age nine. Still, after reading it now, it helped bring to light some of my issues making me feel better about things. I recommend this book to any child, teen or adult who has lost a parent when they were young. Full of very useful information, facts, websites, and resources. The use of real testimonies and famous people can help everyone relate. I further, recommend parents, get and use this book to help with communication and exploring the resources listed for the sake of their child/children who have lost a parent. In this day and age, it is more acceptable to reach out and seek help when someone is struggling. There should be no excuse not to and this wonderful book can definitely help anyone get started.

I was in tears and just amazed Every chapter and page was something that honestly not only helps those who have lost a loved one, but those who KNOW someone who lost a loved one. It gives you hope and reassurance that you can make it through. I am blessed to not have had to lose anyone close to me. My brother in law lost his mom, and he read the book and for a gym, muscle man, he broke. It opens your eyes to the world around and the struggles that you do not think of daily. I am able to be able to support those now because I have a better insight on how I can be better to those.Michelle, thank you for sharing your memories and struggles and your experience on who you have become .I used to read "Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul" and thought that was the bible for my youth... now this book is the bible to my adulthood. This review will be ongoing as this book is huge!!! Initial thoughts are listed now and I'll update as I go through reading it. Please note that I've included several of my personal likes and dislikes as well as information to better help you understand where I'm reviewing it from.My copy of this tome arrived today. I say tome because it's like the frickin yellow pages for a moderate to bigger city! The pages strangely aren't much thicker either lol.Before I start attempting to review this book allow me to lay down a few things for you dear reader.-I have read dozens of books on survival.-I've ran the internet ragged searching for new info and ideas.-I've been interested in survival long enough to remember some dearly departed experts who were truly experts and seen other self proclaimed experts build reputations by emulating them in key terms and speech.-I am not an expert, published author, etc and no matter how much or little I may go to my maker someday knowing I will NEVER consider myself an expert. I will ALWAYS be a learner!!!-I dislike black and white drawings of things so potentially deadly important as edible and medicinal plants especially in today's world.-I dislike survival manuals that have to repeatedly copy and paste from the US Army etc survival manual.-I dislike survival manuals that show techniques using store bought items in their how to and descriptions or illustrations. If you have access to those items you're likely not in a survival situation.-I dislike survival manuals that mix imperial and metric systems. Celcius here in the USA rather than Farenheit and centimeters yet use miles. Pick a damn system and stick with it and provide the conversion factors or better yet two charts where applicable!!!-I dislike manuals that list extremely regional things like fish poisons that only exist in tropical and jungle environments not in the majority of the world.-I dislike a lot of things. Lol-I like color drawings and better yet pictures of edible and medicinal as well as poisonous plants.-I like clear systems of measurement and sticking with that system. Imperial/Standard if you will because I'm an American. If we were in Europe then I'd say metric.-I like thoroughness and innovation in topics and information.-I like to read something and say oh I didn't know that or haven't seen that before!-I like to feel my money was well spent and the topics I read were thoroughly covered in depth and detail and a common person of common intelligence and education can understand it all.I think you can somewhat get a feel for me without my continuation.So I do like I normally do with a new book on survival. I go straight to the table of contents and read. This one seems promising.I then go to an area of interest that I know something about and I start reading. Ok this one covers that reasonably well or really well.I then go to an area where I may not know very much about and read. Hmm I learned something or well nothing groundbreaking here.I then go to the edible and medicinal plants section because if I go here first and don't like what I see I'm likely to put the book away and not read it.So I'm my initial evaluation of this book I'm going to initially call it a dang good primer on survival that a person can go to, read, learn something, and then further research it to gain knowledge and understanding. My feelings might change as I drag myself through reading this one and I'll update along the way.Why do I feel this way? Well let's see...Black and White drawings of plants.... This virtually kills a survival manual for me.Use of wire mesh in a turtle trap. They should've revamped it showing natural resources rather than a hardware store project.Repeatedly they copy and paste from the US Army survival manual. Not enough to say you should just read that but enough. While I understand citing your sources and not reinventing the wheel as well as quoting so as to not plagerize I prefer to see copy and paste kept to a minimum.No manual no matter how complete compares to hands on learning and skills.I do like that they have a section on water work with small craft etc. I like their explanation of bow making which I just browsed rather than read. I do like that they have a section in cold weather that contains input from cold weather campers etc.I'll read this book cover to cover. I find it increasingly difficult to read survival manuals and books anymore because the majority just remind me of reading someone else's work again for the umpteenth time. However if I learn something then it's time and money well spent. I just dislike the amount of time it takes to find that nugget or two sometimes!!!All in all it appears to cover a wide variety of topics and sub topics and I hope that it's as thorough as it's size would indicate.For now I'm giving it five stars and even though they do a lot of things I dislike I'm hoping I'll continue to feel good about this initial rating.I bought my own copy with my own money for full asking price off Amazon receiving no discounts compensation or sexual favors for my review. I review honestly and attempt to show the good bad ugly and indifferent to better help others make educated buying choices. My whole intent and goal is to help others being I already spent the money!!!!If you find my review helpful please let Amazon and others know by clicking yes. Exactly what I wanted. Break down on skills that we've lost as a "modern" society. It's a big book and has a lot in it. If you're wanting to know more about what to do when modern conveniences aren't there...this is for you.

This is a huge book with lots of information at a very economical price. It covers a lot of topics but probably not enough indepth to be used as a sole survival manual. Better than nothing of course but I would consider this more of an outdoors tutorial and not quite the "everything you need to know". I don't really think any one book covers all those topics entirely. So this is more geared to all around basic know how which in and of itself is valuable.The reason for the 4 stars is the title maybe leading people to think this is enough if you are considering it for prepping or Armageddon. As others have pointed out (but it's worth saying over and over) black and white pictures of edible plants are really not helpful. It is basically rolling the dice. My Dad grew up in a very rural/wilderness area and taught me things like foraging. Problem is if you are away from it for a long time a lot of these plants look alike with only minute differences. So even having some experience it would only be an absolute emergency before I tried winging it with black and white pictures and drawings. You can learn from them but true foraging needs at least detailed colored photos and instruction if you can from a LOCAL guide. Not everything grows everywhere and a guide can show you the environment you are most likely to find the right edible plants and weed out mimics. And unless you travel a lot your survival information should focus on your local area. What's available for food, shelter, fuel, ect. How and where and even when to find it.

I originally owned this in paperback form and was so impressed by it that when it became available for the Kindle I got it again. Having done 5+ months of relief work in Louisiana post-Katrina, I can't begin to tell you how woefully unprepared most Americans are for any form of disaster, and how much this book --read with a pad & pen at hand for taking notes -- could save lives and property in a wide variety of scenarios.All the other reviews are spot on re: the breadth & depth of information.I've read/reviewed a huge number of "survival" books and this book, coupled with The Encyclopedia of Country Living, are THE two I would grab in any SHTF scenario --be it natural disaster, EMP, needing to shelter in place or bugging out, pandemic, apocalypse, aliens and/or zombie attack-- knowing that with the information in these two volumes I --and likely much of the human race-- could survive being tossed back to the mid-1800s in an eye blink.Everyone should own/read/study this book.

Here, in one volume, is nearly everything you need to know for outdoor survival. A great resource for everyone, including kids. Yes, its giant size means it's not something you throw in your pack (you're supposed to know your skills before you leave). Put it in your camper, or cabin or truck or home library. Study it. A perfect addition to your "survival" or outdoors books. “It’s got nothing to do with devils! He can’t hear!”This is one of those books that sneaks up on you and honestly, I don’t understand why no one knows about this book! This is so underrated it’s criminal. It discusses what it means to be deaf, to look past each other’s differences and love them for them, and that no matter what happens, we can get stronger.Marnie marries Isake Isherwood, the son of the Lord her family is working the lands in exchange for food and a roof over their heads. Her mother and sisters cannot work and her brothers are too young, so she takes the reins. (And her mom is so ungrateful later on)Due to nasty rumors and constant abuse of authority, Isake must ask for her hand, and she quickly discovers he isn’t what she thought him to be. He lies about his lands, takes her to a dank cove where there is no bed, only straw, and he rapes her.It’s handled very well and is not tossed aside.When Isake dies in an accident, two older women overhear her distressed cries to the priest, Father Brannan, and rumors circulate about her murdering her husband.And brand her a witch.Add in a “mad boy” that latches onto her kindness, Father Brannan, a secret about what the house is worth, and you have yourself a very interesting story. Though short, it ties up all loose ends and left me satisfied with the outcome.I was in awe watching how Marnie came up with signs to communicate with Raven, who she realizes isn’t plagued by devils, but deaf. He’s been whipped, beaten, and mocked simply because he cannot speak and scares the villagers when he attempts to, for he cannot form words, merely sounds that sound “inhuman” to them.Marnie is afraid at first, but when she realizes what’s going on and how much he’s suffering, works to find a way to communicate with him, even when all seems impossible.All the characters were complex and each had their moments where I wanted to slap them-but they all made it out fine, thank goodness, because they also had plenty of moments where I sat there going LIVE please! Don’t die omg.I loved the romance. It bloomed naturally, it was so sweet, and was a stark contrast to everything Marnie endured in the beginning. The romance is honestly one of the strongest highlights.Highly recommended to all.

Bought this book two days ago and finished it in one night (granted, I stayed up till 6am, but I'm a night owl and started it around 3). As my favorite genre is mideval with a twist, I've got to say this is quite an amazing read. It starts off slow, but like most other reviews, it hooks you without you ever knowing at what part it did so. Interesting characters that are believable, though I would have liked more insight and devolopment, but that's coming from someone who reads series instead of novels most of the time. I'd very much recommend this to readers who are familiar with "Dragon's Bait" by Vivian Vande Velde.SPOILER~Y STUFF::One thing that would have been fun - if not a little cheesy - would be the fact that Raven ended up being the 'treasure' they were all looking for. If he ended up being the king's bastard-born son. Don't get me wrong, I really did like how it ended (her courage through the trial and the growth of their relationship is perfect and heartwretching) but I wish there was just one more good thing that happened to these characters that went through so much. But I guess that the lesson of the book was less of a 'be careful who you judge' and more of a 'don't put up with toxic people' morale. But, that might just be my mindset for strong leads after reading "A Court of Thorns and Roses" series right before this.

I read this for the first time when I was twelve. I sort of stumbled upon it at the bookstore, attracted more by the cover than anything else. The story is very lovely and gentle. It really touched me on a spiritual level, and it's a book I often find myself returning to. I don't want to spend a lot of time rehashing the plot, but I will say it's a story of struggle, ostracism, and the healing power of innocent love. I wish this book was available on kindle, as I have a degenerative eye disease that disables me from reading regular print books.To any parents who are concerned about the possible content of this story: there is a very brief, simple love scene and non-explicit mentions of sexual attraction between two characters. However, I will point out that, unlike many young adult books, it involves two people who are in love with each other and it plays an important role in the main character's struggle to allow herself to love physically.

I really enjoyed this book, nearly as much as Wolf Woman. Marnie's character is independent and fierce in what she believes in, despite what everyone else thinks of her. This is shown more and more as she takes Raven under wing and teaches him the ways of kindness he's never known before. Even with the whole village against them and being wrongfully accused of witchcraft, Marnie continues to fight for what she thinks is right, for herself and for Raven.The ending is bittersweet. Things worked out, but not in ways she planned and not perfectly. It makes the story that much more real, and ended on a hopeful note despite the loose ends. Sherryl Jordan leaves a few things to the imagination.

it makes driving around montana much more interesting because it explains what you are seeing outside the car windows. how the formations got there, how long ago... it has a lot of geological explainations that still go over my head sometimes but im learning and as i do, it makes the next trip past interesting again because of my increased understanding. i plan to get another copy for the other car so we always have one!

I would like to see more geologic detail. But for describing an entire state, this book does a very good job.

If you are a geology buff and want to explore Montana this is a good book for an expert or novice.

I am a professional geographer who has purchased and used numerous roadside guides in my field explorations. This book is a good overview of Montana's geologic story, but the maps are lacking detail and it lacks a milepost listing of features. It is suitable for reading in preparation for a trip, but without milepost listings, it is not a good field tool. In addition to this book, I also have purchased the South Dakota book in this series and it too was a disappointment.

An interesting read but some of it seems a little dated.

What a great read! Well written, well organized, and incredibly packed with information. Was an awesome companion on a road trip to Glacier Park.

if you ever go on a road trip and you see the way the ground is pushed up or eroded down and you wonder how it got that way, this book and all the others in this series will open your eyes

Love the Roadside Geology books. Even though I am a geologist, they are written for everyone to understand. Take them along on trips and learn about the area. Cuts along the road become very interesting.

The Greek word symbol--a technical word for creed--identified the function of such summaries of the church's teaching as its identifying statement of belief, purpose, and mission. The Apostles' and Nicene Creeds both offered believers guidance for public instruction and witness and also served to regulate and evaluate the public theology of the church's teachers. They demarcated lines between errors that had attacked the faith and biblical truth. When Emperor Charles V called upon the Lutheran princes and municipal governments to identify their public teaching in 1530 at the Diet of Augsburg, the Wittenberg theologians and their associates from other territories, under the leadership of Martin Luther's colleague, Philip Melanchthon, composed what they called a confession of the faith (after considering the label defense [apology]). That document, the Augsburg Confession, became recognized as the public symbol of the Evangelical Lutheran movement. It became the legal definition on which the political toleration of its adherents was based through the religious Peace of Augsburg of 1555. By 1555 the Apology of the Augsburg Confession, the Smalcald Articles, and Luther's Catechisms were also being used alongside the Augsburg Confession to describe and define what the Wittenberg reformers intended as reform and thus to regulate ecclesiastical life in various territories that had accepted the Reformation. The doctrinal controversies of the 1550s and 1560s necessitated further definition of public teaching, however, in the view of many Lutheran governments. Some of them sponsored the composition of additional confessions of faith, while others assembled confessional documents in collections called a corpus doctrinae (body of teaching). Melanchthon and other Wittenberg theologians had first used the term corpus doctrinae for the fundamental summary of the Christian faith, a term akin to analogy of faith. Later the term designated documents that could help determine the elements of the analogy of faith, and from 1560 it was employed to entitle a formal collection of such documents. In that year a printer in Leipzig, Ernst Vgelin, published a collection of the ancient creeds and eleven confessions and theological treatises from Melanchthon's pen as the Corpus doctrinae Philippicum. That collection became the legal definition of the faith in electoral Saxony in 1566 and in other lands at about the same time. Similar corpora doctrinae were published in a number of other principalities in the 1560s; they usually included Luther's Smalcald Articles and Catechisms as well as the Augsburg Confession and its Apology, along with one or more other local confessional documents. Two corpora assembled by Martin Chemnitz in 1576, for the principalities of Braunschweig-Lneburg and Braunschweig-Wolfenbttel, provided a model for the Formula of Concord. The authors of the Formula of Concord responded to objections from followers of Melanchthon who treasured the Corpus doctrinae Philippicum, and therefore they did not use the term corpus doctrinae when they prepared the Formula for publication with the ancient creeds of the church, the Augsburg Confession and its Apology, and Luther's Smalcald Articles and Catechisms after the completion of the Formula of 1577. One of the leading figures in its composition, Jakob Andreae of the University of Tbingen, was commissioned to compose a preface for this collection of documents that would speak for the princes who had sponsored the drive for Lutheran reconciliation and unity which the Formula had climaxed. In it he sketched the history of the conflicts over the interpretation of Luther's teaching. Andreae's efforts included tireless travels and diplomatic negotiations that finally brought Elector Ludwig of the Palatinate into concert with the other two leading Evangelical princes of the German Empire, the electors of Saxony and Brandenburg, August and Joachim II. These three, joined by eighty other princely and municipal governments, led 8,188 theologians into subscription of the Formula of Concord by 1580, and the Formula and other confessions were published as the Book of Concord on the fiftieth anniversary of the presentation of the Augsburg Confession, on 25 June 1580. The Book of Concord received criticism from certain quarters, particularly the followers of Matthias Flacius Illyricus regarding the doctrine of original sin expressed in the Formula, and from those whose spiritualizing view of the real presence of Christ's body and blood in the Lord's Supper led them to reject the Formula's sacramental theology and its Christology. After having a chance to read more of this new translation of the Book of Concord, I still conclude that this book is--overall--very good. Yes, the translation does pluralize some areas where the original was singular, such as Luther's explanation of the Ten Commandments in his Small Catechism. Nevertheless, such pluralizations seem natural to the modern ear and tongue and do not seem a deliberate ruse to avoid using "he, him, or his," such as the explanation of who is my neighbor. The translators and editors should not have allowed these subject-verb-predicate mismatches, but were probably allowed for political correctness. However, other areas are deliberately so worded for modern correctness, such as portion of the Smalcald Articles where the translators change singulars to plurals to avoid reference to male clergy. Translators are not to make something likeable to the modern reader but make it understandable. So my first impressions were off a bit, but not much on pluralizations for political correctness.The references and historical background in the footnotes are superb and bests any BOC yet to come to print. This alone makes the book worth its purchase--so much so students of the Confessions should have this volume and use it! It was especially refreshing to see incorrect references in previous Book of Concord editions corrected in this edition.The biggest possible "problem" with this BOC is its use of Melanchthon's second Latin version of the Apology as the basis for the translation. Kolb and Wengert do make a serious case for their decision, much of which has merit. I do not have the historical or theological qualifications, however, to say definitively if using Melanchton's second Latin version was the best choice or not, but readers should be aware of this decision.In short, this edition does have some shortcomings of which readers should be aware. However, it is the most readable BOC to date and has the best footnotes of any BOC, bar none. Thus, if you want to read the Lutheran Confessions, then buy this edition and read it. However, for serious study, cross-refer this edition with the Concordia Triglotta to hone in on the original authors' intents.

I am getting quite a library started which yields a lot of information for me to study being a newcomer to the Lutheran Faith.This book is fascinating to read because it goes back to the beginning of the Reformation.

While there are a few translations of the Book of Concord around, this one does well as an alternative to Tappert's translation or the overly-cumbersome Triglotta. This translation is easy to read and the explanatory notes are well written and easy to comprehend. This is as good a translation for laymen as Tappert, and good value for money as well.

I recently joined a Lutheran (LCMS) church after becoming dissatisfied with the lack of clear doctrine in my old church. I read most of this book to familiarize myself with Lutheran doctrine prior to joining the new church. This book provides a very solid doctrinal foundation and provides insight into the foundational principles of the Lutheran church. It also provides insight into the problems in the Roman Catholic church in the 1500s.This is not for a casual reader. It is a challenging read and requires that you pay attention to the arguments being developed. But I found that it was worth the effort. My faith was strengthened by the clear defense of foundational principles (e.g. justification by grace through faith on account of Christ).While I recommended Luther's Small Catechism with explanations to all Christians, I can only recommend this to Christians ready to put in the effort to deepen their understanding of the foundational principles of the faith. Much more challenging than the typical Christian bookstore fare, but also more rewarding.

Before you go to your pastor with questions, have this handy. If you study this half as much as you study your Bible, you are on your way to being an educated disciple.

I don't review a lot of books anymore, but this one got to me. There are lots of books written by people -- including me -- who had a hard time growing up. Abusive parents, poverty, oppression. War. There is a lot of awful stuff children endure.Trevor Noah endured all of it. Name something bad that a kid can experience and it probably happened to him. Born under apartheid, his existence was illegal. His birth was, as the title of his book suggests, a crime.As the child of a white father and a black mother under South Africa during apartheid, if he had been noticed by the authorities, they would have taken him from his family and put him ... somewhere. So merely surviving until the end of apartheid was no mean feat. Add to that extreme poverty, violence and life under the most oppressive, racist regime you can imagine. Actually, you may not be able to imagine it. I knew it was bad, but South Africa refined oppression into an art form.One of the other noteworthy things about this book was that I learned great deal about things I thought I already knew. I don't know if Noah intended it as a cautionary tale, but it is. Chilling.I didn't read the book. I listened to the audiobook because Noah reads it himself. He has a beautiful, melodic voice and a lovely cadence. It was a treat for my ears and my brain.You might think with all of this terrible stuff -- and some of it is really horrific -- that this would be an angry, possibly embittered man. But he isn't.He's funny when humor is possible. Even when he's serious, there is grace and wit -- plus a sweetness and generosity of spirit that's rather uplifting. I don't think I've ever said that about a book. It's not a word I use lightly. Trevor Noah is a rare person, able to appreciate the good stuff in his life and not obsess over the considerable amount of injustice he has experienced.I'm not usually a big fan of celebrity memoirs or autobiographies, but this is exceptional. If you have the patience, listen to it as an audiobook. Otherwise, consider reading it. He's a smart guy, a good writer, and an astute observer of humanity, government, politics, and relationships. Insightful, witty, and entertaining, I highly recommend it.

My decision to request Born a Crime has nothing to do with star power or fandom. I have to admit I have never seen Trevor Noah on the Daily Show. I requested this book when I learned it was about Trevor Noah's childhood in Apartheid South Africa.I started reading my ebook galley as soon as I was approved.I have to love a guy who finds comedy in tragedy and who gleefully spins yarns about experiences that would keep most of us in therapy for a lifetime. There is a genius in comedy that allows us to encounter devastating truths through the protective lens of laughter.The heroine of the book is Noah's mother, a feisty lady with a solid rock faith, a gal who snubs her nose at things that don't make sense. She makes mistakes, but always out of love. She takes huge risks but somehow Jesus is always there to catch her mid-fall.Noah was "naughty as s***" and a challenge to raise, but never hateful or mean. He learned to navigate Apartheid society's complex system that divided people in to three groups: black, white, and colored. How one was categorized was senseless. Japanese were put into the 'white' slot but Chinese into the 'colored'."The genius of Apartheid was convincing people who were the overwhelming majority to turn on each other. Apart hate, is what is was."Noah was 'colored' with a 'black' Xhosa African mother and a 'white' Swiss father, his very existence implicating his parent's crime. Had the police discovered them, his parents would be sent to jail and Noah sent to an orphanage. He spent much of his life hidden away, indoors. His parents could not be seen together with him, and his mother had to even pretend he was not her child.Noah was "colored by complexion but not by culture." He spoke multiple languages, Xhosa and Zulu and Afrikaans, and English, could fit into most groups, but felt affiliated to black culture.The book is a series of episodic tales, thoughtfully constructed, saving the climax of his family history until the end of the book, after we have come to know and understand them."I saw the futility of violence, the cycle that just repeats itself, the damage that's inflicted on people that they in turn inflict on others. I saw, more than anything, that relationships are not sustained by violence, but by love."The book is funny but is more than a diversive read, it enlarges our understanding of the world. Noah offers an understanding of South African history, colonialism, and Apartheid that is engaging and relevant. He shares the important things he learned and offers them to us. We should listen. We should learn.

Wow...I started this book yesterday and could not put it down. As a new mom myself, I read most of it on my Kindle while either nursing or holding my son, which was fitting as this is such a tribute to his mom. As a long time viewer of the Daily Show, I started watching as Trevor took over from Jon Stewart and while I've always thought he does a good job, I had no idea the depth of character and experiences that were below the surface of those cute dimples! As is fitting to the Daily Show atmosphere, Trevor discusses difficult topics like race often, but I don't think I will ever watch a segment the same way again after reading his descriptions of what it was like to grow up under and during the fall of apartheid. And I keep thinking back to some of his impassioned pieces prior to the election with a whole new appreciation.But this review shouldn't be about his celebrity on the Daily Show. It stands alone as a remarkable memoir and a completely engaging story that will appeal to anyone who's felt like an outsider. He is a wonderful story teller, finding the right balance between relaying his experiences, weaving in the social atmosphere around it and doing it in such a way that even as an American reader, I was able to visualize the communities he was describing in rich detail. Additionally, he was able to explain aspects of a post apartheid world that not only clarify the plight of South Africans today but also shed light on some of the challenges we are facing here in the US. He has a unique perspective and a wonderful voice that I hope to hear more of in the future.
