"Doctor Livingstone I presume?" is undoubtedly one of the most well known quotes in history. Very few people, however, are familiar with the history underlying the meeting of Dr. David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley. This book details the lives of the two men and the historical background through which they were thrown together. Livingstone, one of the foremost explorers of his day is searching for the source of the Nile River. Through a combination of bad luck, poor planning, disease, weather, natives, etc., Livingstone is virtually stranded on the banks of Lake Tangyanika.Henry Stanley, a newspaper correspondent undertakes a rescue mission at the direction of his publicity hungry publisher. This book details that mission and the international setting under which it took place. The perils of African exploration in the late 19th century cannot be overstated. This book does an excellent job impressing this upon the reader.I found this book very similar in style and experience to Undaunted Courage (which detailed the Voyage of Discovery undertaken by Lewis and Clark) and River of Doubt (dealing with Theodore Roosevelt's exploration of the Amazon basin. If you enjoyed either of these books, you will like this one as well. If you read this book and enjoy it, I highly recommend the other two.

The meeting of Dr David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley in the middle of Africa in 1871 is perhaps one of the most remarkable and dramatic events in history. Like the Miracle of Dunkirk, when a flotilla of civilian boats rescued the British army from Nazi forces early in WWII, the near impossible odds of success and eventual epic victory seem to be pulled from a Tolkien book rather than real history. Thus Martin Dugard’s Into Africa: The Epic Adventures of Stanley and Livingstone, is rightfully a story first and a history second. In Dugard’s story, Stanley is the true protagonist, who will survive Africa to become Livingstone’s successor as the world’s greatest explorer. However, he ends up working counter to the Doctor’s goal of a slavery-free Africa, tragically helping to make the Dark Continent... darker. The book begins at the start of Livingstone’s third and final trek into Africa in 1866. The world renowned, prototypical explorer and paragon of Victorian virtue is desperate to redeem his reputation and finances after his disastrous 1858 Zambezi expedition. He sets out to find the source of the Nile, an elusive mystery since 460 BC when the ancient Greek Herodotus failed to find the source. However, despite setting out with his usual exhilaration, writing in his journal that Africa is “a tonic to the system”, the trials of Africa quickly overwhelm the now older man. His porters desert him, taking irreplaceable supplies. He constantly fights all manner of African diseases, often so weakened by fever and dysentery that his few remaining porters have to carry him.Completely obsessed with finding the source, he relies on the Arab slave traders he despises to continue his quest. Dugard writes that “it was as if he had sold a part of his soul in the name of ambition.” After staying with the slavers for five years, he witnesses the Arabs massacre a village of Africans deep in the center of the continent. Faced with the evil of the slave trade, he leaves for the small village of Ujiji, where, sick and without supplies, he helplessly and hopelessly waits for a “good Samaritan” to rescue him.Livingstone has been gone for nearly four years and is presumed dead by many when the New York Herald’s owner, James Gordon Bennett, seeking an exciting story to distract the public from a gold market scandal, assigns Stanley, his foreign correspondent, the task of finding Livingstone. An unlikely African explorer, Stanley was born in England to a prostitute and the town drunk. Abandoned at the age of five, he was sent to live in a orphanage where he was regularly sexually violated until, at the age of 17, he escaped to America. In the States he fights for both the Confederacy and Union in the Civil War, where he discovers his talent for writing. After an ill-fated adventure in Turkey, he dedicates himself to journalism, eventually joining the staff of the Herald.Ironically, Stanley’s horrific upbringing prepares him well for the brutalities of an African expedition. After months of preparation, facing almost no chance of success, he sets out with a large caravan from Zanzibar. Struggling to lead his recalcitrant men, Stanley resorts to whipping them constantly, at one point writing in his journal “The virtue of a good whip was well tested by me”. Overcoming multiple mutiny attempts, a near fatal case of cerebral malaria, a war with “The African Bonaparte”, crocodile attacks, and worst of all the unforgiving African landscape itself, Stanley finds the strength and confidence he has always lacked. Miraculously, he also finds Livingstone. Upon their meeting he asks the now famous question, “Doctor Livingstone, I presume?”Stanley and Livingstone spend weeks together in Ujiji. Stanly, “basking in the older man’s grace”, writes of the doctor:“I grant that he is not an angel, but he approaches to that being as near as the nature of a living man will allow.”Stanley tries to convince Livingstone to return to England with him but the Doctor refuses. Weeks after one of the most improbable meetings in history, Stanley returns to Zanzibar and Livingstone continues his quest for the source. He dies shortly after, his body destroyed by years of African hardship and disease, in a village almost 600 miles south of the actual source. Stanley takes up Livingstone’s mantle as the world’s greatest explorer, finding the source of the Congo and following the dangerous river all the way to the West coast of the continent.Dugard tells this story with great care and skill. He is himself an adventurer and while researching Into Africa, he followed Stanley’s path across what is today Tanzania, getting thrown into an African prison while doing so. This is, presumably, what helps him understand his explorers’ relationship with the African landscape, leading to wonderful insights such as the following after Stanley’s near miss with a crocodile:“Africa had soothed him and calmed him and made him feel as if he were its master. But it was all a myth. The continent had no equal.”Dugard also enhances his story with an epic style. Like a gifted movie director, he cuts chapters back and forth between Stanley, Livingstone, and the rest of the world, creating dramatic scope and pacing. Little details, for instance starting each Stanley-focused chapter by counting down the “Miles to Livingstone”, gives an intense sense of urgency to his relentless quest. But Dugard never loses the intimacy of his characters. For example, when he describes Stanley “striving desperately to say exactly the right thing” when meeting Livingstone. If Dugard loses anything in his account, it is the different impacts Stanley and Livingstone will have on Africa after their meeting. Livingstone’s fervent abolitionist beliefs and his graphic description of the horrific slave trade, especially the massacre he witnesses, will spur the British Empire to use its superpower status to end the slave trade. Stanley, however, tragically uses his knowledge of the Congo to enforce the brutal Belgian regime of King Leopold II, failing to continue the true legacy of Livingstone. The two explorers serve as contrasting symbols, the best and worst of Western action in Africa.

“Doctor Livingstone, I presume?” These iconic words are culturally embedded in the psyche of Americans (and, I assume, the British as well), but I had only a vague understanding of their meaning before reading Dugard’s account of the two expeditions that would bring the phrase into household immortality—the first of which was Dr. David Livingstone’s search to once-and-for-all find the source of the Nile and the other was Henry Stanley’s search to discover whether Livingstone was still alive. If one isn’t a diehard history buff, it can be hard to maintain one’s interest in events of almost 150 years ago. Let me assure you, this isn’t the case for stories of African explanation—including “Into Africa.” If the author is at all skilled, these books read like novels with an almost improbably high level and pace of tension. That’s because almost everything in Africa in those days was working against the explorer, and most things were actively trying to kill him. A summary of threats include: a panoply of diseases (e.g. malaria, dysentery, etc.), an ark of animals and insects (e.g. poisonous snakes, lions, elephants, rhinos, etc.), and of course tribes and other humans (e.g. one could find oneself caught in the cross-fire between Arab slave traders and tribes who resented being enslaved, even if one had no stake in the fight.) And if none of those killers got one (and at least some of them always did), your men might desert you in the middle of the night while absconding with all your goods—and those goods were how one paid for both one’s food and for safe passage through tribal lands. In Dugard’s work, one sees each of these threats played and replayed, as well as a host of others from political conflicts, incompetence, and disgruntledness. It should be noted that there was almost no precedence for sending someone to look for a lost explorer—it was considered so unlikely to succeed in that era, not to mention likely getting a lot more killed. The book largely alternates chapters featuring Stanley with those featuring Livingstone. This is particularly the case once the book reaches the point at which Stanley is actively on the trail. These were very different men, but the name of each man became synonymous with courage. Stanley was an American journalist who made it to the top based solely on willingness to go places and do things other reporters wouldn’t. In fact, he had trouble making a go of his career starting out, and it wasn’t until a traumatic adventure that he developed the assertiveness to make something of himself. Livingstone was already a legend when he took on this expedition, and was arguably too far past prime to be taking on such an adventure. The men were also quite different as expedition leaders. Stanley ran his caravan with an iron fist, while Livingstone was known for being lax and easily distracted—while they were at opposite end of the spectrum in this regard, it seems likely that both would have succeeded better with more moderation. At the book’s beginning there’s a conflict at the Royal Geographical Society between Richard Burton (the explorer, not the actor) and John Speke over the source of the Nile. Livingston, a living legend, was asked to investigate and settle the issue—an objective he didn’t complete. It should be noted that finding the river’s source isn’t as easy as it sounds. Speke was correct in that the Nile reached at least to Lake Victoria (at the equator), but it wasn’t clear whether Victoria was connected to other lakes in the southern hemisphere, and—if so—how far down it went. There was a chain of lakes to the south that might have drained into the Nile, but, as it happens, flow into the Congo River.I found this to be fascinating reading. The book consists of 40 chapters divided among five parts, and so most of the chapters are quick reads and the interspersal of the Stanley and Livingstone story lines keeps the pacing going nicely. Dugard did a good job structuring the narrative.I’d recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about Stanley, Livingstone or who just want to know what it was like to be an explorer on the Dark Continent. [Fun-fact: While “dark continent” sounds blatantly racist, it turns out that the phrase was originally used in reference to the fact that so much of the map was blank—i.e. it was largely unmapped.]

Another 5 star review! Hopefully this helps you know a bit more what you're getting. If you don’t know anything about this book, you’ll want to check out the Nerdy Nummies YouTube channel, where she has videos of how to make all of these recipes. The cookbook is simply another convenient format for people that want fast access to some of her more popular recipes.INTO:Nerdy Nummies is the first book created by 'Ro' off of the youtube channel Nerdy Nummies where she makes nerdy style things to eat or drink like from video games, or outer space. Her show has even featured the past CEO of Nintendo and Neil deGrasse Tyson, which is pretty fun.THE SECOTIONS:-To start, there’s a list of everything you may end up needing. You should probably just get these as needed.-Immediately after that there is a basics section where Ro shows how she makes most of the basic desserts. The 3 I’ve made so far have been phenomenal, (brownies, chocolate cake, pound cake). You do want to make sure you’re using quality ingredients for things like flour and coco, you’ll taste them in the end. This section makes the book worth it, it’s so hard to find a cook book that consistently has good recipes if you don’t have a good recommendation.-After this she gets into more complicated recipes in a few sections such as Math and Science, and Fantasy desserts. These can go from mixing a few ingredients to a bit complicated so chose wisely.-The final sections are things like acknowledgments, conversion charts, resource guide, cutout templates, and an Index. The final page is a bit about the author.MY EXPERIENCE WITH THIS BOOK-My experience has been very positive, as I mentioned before the basics are really incredible and I’m excited to create dessert style monuments for games and other things I like. I bought the book because I like the Youtube channel and want faster access to the recipes, but surprisingly so far my favorite part of the book has been the basic recipes.

Very cute book, awesome ideas. Be careful when you bake the chocolate chip cookies, there is a misprint. Ours came out VERY salty and after watching Ro's video, we realized the book calls for salted butter and 2 teaspoons baking soda (it should be 1 teaspoon according to the video and the butter was not specified so maybe try unsalted butter).

I ordered this for my 12 year old daughter and she cried tears of joy when it came! This book is AMAZING!!! Rosanna Pansino you have knocked this out of the park! My daughter is also a visual learning and this book has so many great step by step photographs! Every Recipe has 6 photographs. There are templates, a list of all the tools you need, and it's easy to read. You will NOT be disappointed, as my daughter said she could look at this book for hours and we can't wait to try out the lava cake for her 12th birthday! We are looking forward to having her book signed at the event hear in Orlando next week. Thank you for encouraging my daughter to keep baking! One happy Mommy here!

My 12 year old sister loves to watch Nerdy Nummies on YouTube all the time. She got me hooked, and most of the time, I put off studying for my college lectures to watch Ro bake! This will be her Christmas present, and cannot wait! There are some really sweet recipes in this cookbook and anyone of any skill level can bake them! This is a fantastic and well done cookbook Ro! You have outdone yourself! Anyone who loves to bake or just loves Nerdy Nummies, this cookbook is for you! What are you waiting for? Go buy it!!

This book is absolutely beautiful. It has very nice and high quality full color pages, is easy to follow along with, well laid out, and sturdy. The decorating ideas in it are adorable and there are very nice photos of the different steps to give readers a good visual aid to help them recreate the recipes at hand. It also has QR codes to scan with your phone for easy access to templates for recipies! Never fear though, if you lack a smart phone it does have templates in the back to use as well, you'll just need to scan them rather than print them!I'm absolutely pleased with my purchase and would reccomend it to any of my friends!

I bought this for my 10 year old daughter. She loves it! It's everything my nerd child could ask for. As a matter of fact, she made the hamburger cupcakes for a family reunion and everyone adored them. I love how seeing her become so involved with baking and decorating.Side note: Many of the recipes can be substituted for premade box mix if your short on time or ingredients. That's what we did with the cupcakes.

Love, love, LOVE this cookbook. The pictures are fun and vibrant, the recipes are adorable, and the everything is laid out very well in an easy-to-follow format. To be perfectly honest, my girlfriend and I will probably never make anything found in this book ourselves, but it's handy for when her niece comes over to visit us. It also makes a fabulous gift for anyone with a little "nerd" in their soul. My girlfriend's niece introduced us to Rosanna Pansino's YouTube channel, and we just think it's the cutest thing we've ever seen. Very fun and very well done!

the projects there are nice and there are some creative decorating ideas. however you should not treat this like a traditional cook book. the recipes as followed are wrong. one of them had 1/2 the quantity of an ingredient completely wrong. there are no tips on how to do some of the frosting work. exe the comic book cookies. no tips on making some of the harder frosting decorations, kept braking. the macarons recipe as followed was a flop. had to youtube a recipe and found it was vastly different. and the youtube recipe came out great. so if you pick this up, it's a very good IDEA book.

Before reading Michael D O’Brien’s musings on the Second Coming of Christ, titled The Apocalypse: Warning, Hope and Consolation, it might help to listen to Adele singing Skyfall. Here is the first stanza of that apocalyptic song:This is the endHold your breath and count to tenFeel the earth move and thenHear my heart burst again.Michael D O’Brien has written a perceptive, wise and witty book about the Apocalypse. He points out that before the Second Coming, Christians will suffer severe persecutions at the hands of the Antichrist and his assistant the Beast. Christians are indeed suffering persecutions in China, North Korea and Muslim countries, and Christians are under attack even in liberal western democracies for their views on abortion, birth control, euthanasia and homosexual marriage. O’Brien’s point is that we can’t really tell if the end is near, but that it is better to be safe by betting it is than to be sorry.Michael D O’Brien is an excellent writer, who combines wisdom, common sense and clarity to write compelling works. His fiction is first-rate. And he provides readers with many insights, such as:“Storytelling universally communicates the following in some manifestation or other: (1) Life is beautiful and mysterious – and filled with perils. (2) Man is a mystery to himself, yet he may come to know himself, in part, through reflection on the meaning of his personal experiences, in overcoming peril and by searching for the truth.”Materialism is the basic philosophy of modern liberals, and it is inherently political, for it seeks to present to mankind a coherent vision of the meaning and purpose of life. That it fails miserably in this regard, at enormous cost in terms of human suffering and death, yet continues to grow and devour much of the Western world, should alert us to the fact that Western civilization is crumbling about us.In a footnote, O’Brien cites this quotation from a Father Brown detective story written by the great G K Chesterton: “The first effect of not believing in God is that you lose your common sense.” That’s just for starters. In the end, you lose everything.“Modern liberals proclaim that the only truly grave sin is “intolerance” by which is meant making people feel uncomfortable about themselves. Hand in hand with this is the endless vilification of those who are doctrinally correct.” What is ironic is that when liberals vilify Christians they make Christians feel uncomfortable about themselves, and that is intolerant, so liberals are violating their own “Prime Directive”.Another memorable paragraph mentioned that only the Roman Catholic Church has the capacity to block the immoral agenda of the totalitarian, secular, materialist, and hedonist States that are becoming more widespread in the world. In a way, that’s sad, but it’s also Good News, since the founder of the Catholic Church is all good, all knowing and all powerful. If you care about stopping the great evil of Antichrist and his army, read this book for enlightenment and encouragement, then join the Church militant in the battle to save the world. This book lives up to its title.

This is a sober and trenchant analysis of our age in light of Scriptural and Church teaching on the end times. You will not get a systematic treatment of eschatology in this short book but you will benefit from O'Brien's wisdom on the spirit of our age and how to do what Jesus told us to do-- which is watch for and expect both opposition and his coming. The last two chapters may prove to be the go-to enchiridion for believers who find themselves living through the great apostasy and reign of the antichrist. ThIs is a short work but many passages merit thoughtful rumination.

Faithful exposition of apocalyptic message of Holy Scripture.

Received earlier than expected! Very good experience!

I started this book, and quit reading it. There were too many characters to keep straight that weren't very well explained. The terms and names of things were so unfamiliar to me, I couldn't enjoy it at all.

Enjoyed the story that is very light reading. I did touch on the fact not everyone is happy with the season and problems can be corked out. I found it to be an OK book

A lot of stories that blend together to create a mixture of life and how there are a lot of different ways we approach the holiday season.

Christmas Tree Farm sounds like a Wonderful place. A lot of stories going on, but well written. A good Christmas story.

Everyone was stressed but I did like that they all supported each other. Wish the kids had been punished for some of their deeds

Didn’t even read all of it. I just don’t care for stories in other countries.

It was a cute Christmas story I did enjoy it.

Interesting story.

This is an extraordinary book which I have read and re-read since it came out in 1998. It is so deeply layered with meaning, remarkable stories and insights that it has been a book I have come back to time and again for wisdom at different junctures in my life. It is an invaluable guide to making travel meaningful as a pilgrimage and to the creative process. Throughout the 5 years that I traveled and wrote my second book, I traveled with two books always - this book and John O'Donahue's Beauty. It's not a "must-read"; it's a "must read many times" because of the depth of insight it offers.

My husband bought this book last year on the recommendation of a friend and I came across it recently while sorting through our kindle account. In light of my (then upcoming) trip to Morocco I thought I would give it a read. I thoroughly enjoyed and was moved by this book. As I read through I highlighted thirty-nine passages, and each one, when I go back and read now, sets ablaze a host of ideas and reflections. One of the highlights of travel is attaining those moments of travel nirvana. Turning a corner and seeing the Eiffel Tower was one such moment for me. It's the times when you suddenly realise you've arrived somewhere that you've always dreamed of. It's a strange sense of achievement and pride and excitement and awe. It's stepping into one of your fantasies, all the while feeling the ground hard beneath your feet. But all too often that rush of emotion is reserved for the big ticket items: Woohoo! Eiffel Tower/Grand Canyon/Big Ben/Robben Island/Victoria Falls. And yet even for the regular traveler, in practise those moments are few and far between. They're two hours in two weeks. And in between?I suspect that "in between" there is a choice. There's routine and familiarity (possible even in the most remote of places) and frustration, maybe a general level of interest with what is passing us by. It's enough to fill a day and feel rewarding but doesn't necessarily speak to your soul, or kindle that fire in the pit of your stomach.Or there's, what shall we call it? Mindfulness? Awareness? Presence? It's the art of seeing what you're not conditioned to see. It's looking up and down, and in gutters, and on rooftops. And all around. It's watching the orange fall off a cart and roll down a street, dodging between feet, chased by a stranger and then thrown through the sky, back to its rightful owner. It's a cat in a thunderstorm hiding from the rain under a brown plastic stool. Or it's a man running from his building on his way to work, kicking a coke bottle top with the energy of early morning and then almost dying of embarrassment when it collides with a passerby. But perhaps most importantly it's finding a way to not only to remember to notice, but to stop and enjoy and capture those moments, and bring them inside, preferably with a sense of wonder and pleasure, and holding them there forever. And it all takes practise. Reading this book is one of those practises.

A professor in college recommended this book to me after I was accepted into a study abroad course to England. The course wasn't religious in nature and it most definitely wasn't a pilgrimage, or at least I didn't think so. A couple chapters into this book and I realized, maybe it was. I felt that drawing need to visit England, along with other countries I drew my heritage to, but I never had a word for it other then travel.Because of this book I took my study abroad course as a pilgrimage and it was so much more important because of that. It wasn't just a $4000 class but an opportunity for me to open up and attempt to discover a deeper reason for my need to travel. Now planning a trip to Ireland, a place even more important to my heritage and sense of self, I am rereading the book and rediscovering aspects I had forgotten. To anyone who travels, for work or play, or anyone who would like to understand how a walk around your own neighborhood could be a pilgrimage.I recommend it highly.

I recently read this book after coming back to the US from Bhutan. It was just what I needed to help me find meaning out of the many mixed emotions I had while traveling. It was very difficult returning to the US after being in such an incredibly different culture. This book helped me integrate my process. It was amazing how much I could relate to the sacred journey of a pilgrimage. This is a precious book I will keep and read again. Traveling has so much more meaning to me than simply being a "tourist". This book helped me realize why traveling is such a powerful experience for me. I highly recommend this book to anyone but especially to those who seek a spiritual path. It is well written and encourages the reader to self examine.

Save time and money. Do not buy, rent or read it even if it is available for free. There are much better books that provide basic introduction to security (first half of the book) and Network Security (second half of the book). Understanding Cryptography (Paar, Pelzl), Cryptography and Network Security (Stallings) and Applied Cryptography (Schneier) are good alternatives covering same/similar topics. The cryptography part of the book is incomprehensible (when compared to the other better books listed above). The Network Security part of the book is very scant with actual details of how protocols provide security. The chapter on cloud security is incoherent with little content dealing on actual cloud security and more on basic cloud terminology/definitions. Most topics are two or three sentences in length. Wikipedia would probably provide more useful information.

Much of the material, especially from the offensive security perspective, is naive at best. Especially lacking are the chapters in the back half, including Cloud Security and Malware/Worms. The description of software exploitation in the first chapter is downright incorrect, defying basic operating systems knowledge (no, local variables are not allocated on the heap). For students exploring security for the first time, please dig deeper than this.

This book made me want to read the history. I dislike historical non-fiction, but this book made me want to do some research. I actually did look up some of the main characters from this story and the whole story is now very familiar. It is so inspiring to see how this author has blended historical fact with fictional characters long forgotten to make us all interested in their fate.I feel like this story moved faster than the first book because it covered a much smaller time span. That seems wrong, but the first book covered decades and this story takes place over a year or less. This story alternated between Lada and Radu’s POV. Radu is sympathedic to Lada but wants Mehmed to love him. Lada wants her country and feels Radu’s rightful place is with him. Things are finally getting put into place for both Mehmed and Lada to achieve their life long goals leaving Radu with the scraps.I really loved the historical setting for this story. There is something to be said for writing historical fact into a fictional setting. The author describes this gritty time in all its uncomfortable glory. The clothes, the housing, the weather, it is all well laid out for the reader. I think the most interesting place we visited in this story, and there was so much traveling happening here, is Constantinople. The city is not at all what Mehmed and Radu think it will be, but somehow it is exactly what I imagined a 15th century city to be.Lada is ruthless in this story. Living in the 15th century she hates the way women are treated and she vows to change that for the women in her own country. She gets her hands dirty, she is under estimated, she is the warrior her country needs to lead them. Lada struggles with her sexuality. She doesn’t regret leaving Mehmed but she needs something to fill the void. Lada seems bloodthirsty but she is only the product of a bloody family line that takes what they know is theirs. Lada spends most of this story building alliances in preparation of one final stand to demand the crown she knows is hers.Radu leads his life with his heart. He is torn between the safety of Nazira, his wife who he has grown to love very much in a platonic way, and pleasing the sultan he desires. Radu is such a good man and he is just in his approach to life. He may not be the warrior Lada is, but he fights for what is right. His is sickened by the war created by Mehmed for a city that isn’t really great, but housing some new friends Radu knows are worthy of living. The most disturbing aspect of Radu is that he fights for a religion he feels home in that forbids his very nature. His trials are heartbreaking. Radu has grown so much from the last book becoming possibly my favorite character. I need to see Radu with the happy ending he deserves. This is fast becoming one of the greatest series ever. The characters are unforgettable. I can’t wait for the conclusion to this saga and I am secretly dreading it. Even the ending of this book was bloody brilliant. If you haven’t read this, I suggest you go right now and pick this up. Once again for this series,if I gave 6 stars, this sequel would get it.

I love this book. Oh my gosh I love this book! It's the sequel so I'll spoil things that happen in the first book so only read if you have read And I Darken. Anyways, Lada is own her own with men she trust trying to take back her throne and it's not going well. Can I just say I love Lada with all my heart. She's mean, she's vicious, and she gets what she wants because of it. There were some points where I thought she can't get crueler but she does and I love her more for it. Now understand it's a historical gender bended retelling of Vlad the Impaler and totally fiction, Vlad was horrible so Lada is horrible. If Lada was real I'd probably hate her but she's not. I don't agree with her or how she acts but I loved how she refused to stop to get what she wanted. The story is split between her and her brother Radu and the different journeys they had taken from the first book. Lada going after her throne and Radu staying with the sultan going after Constantinople. Can I say Radu is an idiot and that he should have went with his sister without the world yelling at me? Sure he stayed for love but Mehmed didn't love him and didn't want anything to do with Radu outside of friendship. Their relationship and what Radu would do to survive in the war waged made me sad for him. He can't see his own worth outside of how other see him and it kind of broke my heart. Then the worth Lada gave herself was so much compared. They are the direct opposite of each other. I love it all. It was a relatively fast read when I had the time for the actual size of the book. I enjoyed the old side characters that made their appearances and the new ones. I really want another in the series that goes so far off the truth of history where Lada just rules the world but alas won't happen. If you want a good Slytherin book series this is it. It's filled with ambition and powerful people. I loved it.

Don’t even think of picking up this book until you’ve read the first book in the duology, And I Darken; you need to know the main characters and their backstory, as told in that book, in order to appreciate or even make much sense of this one.The two books focus on the interesting idea, “What if someone with the personality and heritage of Vlad Dracul had been born female?” The author is thinking of the historical character, not the vampire; this is an alternate history, not a fantasy. It’s not the sort of broad-sweep alternate history that, say, Harry Turtledove writes, but rather focuses chiefly on just a few characters. Those characters’ effect on history, however, plays a much more prominent role in this book than it did in the first one, in which the three main characters were merely teenagers. They are now mature adults, living out the destinies that were established in their youth. The chief characters are Lada, the female Dracula; her brother, Radu, nicknamed “The Handsome” (also a real historical character, but one about whom little is known); and the Ottoman sultan Mehmed II, who became known as Mehmed the Conqueror. In the first book the three, raised together after Lada and Radu’s father, the Voivode (prince) of Wallachia (now part of Romania), left them in the Ottoman court as hostages, formed an intense love triangle: Radu, who is gay, loved Mehmed; Mehmed loved Lada; and Lada, though strongly attracted to Mehmed, loved only Wallachia, of which she was determined to become the ruler. The relationships in this volume are less intense, partly because Mehmed is offstage for most of the story, and Lada and Radu, between whose narratives the book alternates, are separated throughout. However, they are more complex, especially for Radu, who is caught up in conflicting loves and loyalties when Mehmed sends him to Constantinople as a spy and he develops feelings for people he meets there. The book has a lot of thoughtful things to say about such conflicts and, above all, about the cost to oneself and others of obsessions: Radu’s with gaining Mehmed’s love, Mehmed’s with conquering Constantinople, and Lada’s with taking control of Wallachia. The book doesn’t really, in my opinion, have much new to say about the Dracula/Vlad Dracul story—but it shines in its character development and examination of human relationships.
