I became a font nut 20+ years ago when I bought a Mac and fell in love with desktop publishing. As with everything, typefaces have all kinds of rules to the design, and reasons for these rules. I can't stress enough how well Ilene Strizver explains it all. I can't recap this book in this review, there's just too much info. BUT, if you go into it even just wanting to get the basics, I guarantee you will get overly-interested in the mechanics of typography (x height and descenders and kerning and leading and serifs and what to use when and best design practices, etc). For those folks who want to know the story behind type so their projects and crafts and other letter-based efforts start looking WAY above the stuff most people produce (and never try to know), this tome is more than enough. Wow, what an amazing amount of info... I'm going to go back through this a couple more time to ingest it all. To me, typefaces are great artwork. No more having documents look like they were done on a typewriter, ever!

Well designed, great examples, excellent lesson, great exercises. The reader MUST read the small print--some of the examples are what NOT to do, but to people who just gloss over the material, they may not catch the examples demonstrating design flaws, or note there are things not to do. Would love to see a version of this book tied to a a book on how to use Indesign so one would get a how to on both design and use of the tools.

Excellent book!

Purchased for a college Typography course. Rather dry course but the text book is educational and presents itself in an interesting way.

I'm so glad I purchased this book on amazon and not at my bookstore. I saved $40 and the book was practically new. I love the book and would ob paid more I'm just on the budget of a student right now.

Boring

Great book

Very good book to have in your own library.

Great book, very informative and a must have for every graphic designer starting out or veteran to just add to his/her book collection.

Beer Money: A Memoir of Privilege and Loss, by Frances Stroh

Review

“Stroh’s absorbing memoir suggests that most cocoons are permeable and that privilege is relative.” (New York Times Book Review)“With the piercing eye of a visual artist ... Stroh stitches together her and her family’s stories in a series of verbal snapshots.... Stroh’s compelling memoir vividly portrays the aching permanence of loss and the palpability of hope that accompanies starting over.” (Publishers Weekly)“Beer Money is one of those memoirs you neither put down nor forget. I’ll remember Frances Stroh’s family—and the beautifully candid, honest and often unforgettable voice she uses to describe them—for a long time. I was very moved by this book.” (George Hodgman, author of Bettyville)“How does a family dynasty die? In her image-rich memoir, ‘Beer Money,’ Frances Stroh asks the question with heroic honesty, from the inside.” (San Francisco Chronicle)“With an artist’s eye for visual detail… her frank and engrossing memoir captures the long decline of the city of Detroit and her sadly dysfunctional family.” (BBC.com)“A compelling story of loss, but also of the resiliency needed to forgive the past and forge a new future. The Strohs may have lost the trappings of the American Dream, but Frances Stroh finds something of greater value: compassion for family despite—and because of—their missteps and flaws.” (Melissa Coleman, author of This Life Is in Your Hands)“I thought of Sean Wilsey’s great memoir as I read, but what makes Stroh’s book so particular are the class contradictions. In movie terms think Ralph Lauren meets Old Milwaukee. Oh, and it’s also a very moving and powerful story of one young woman’s coming of age.” (Tom Barbash, author of Stay Up With Me)“If the family owned and operated Stroh’s Brewing Co. strived to preserve an image as highbrow folks who nevertheless understood the desires of everyday consumers, Frances Stroh... strips away the facade and reclaims truth.” (San Jose Mercury News)“Of course, the Strohs’ story is fascinating in itself. But what makes this memoir special is Frances Stroh’s clear, brave voice. Free of regret or judgment, she renders even her family’s darkest moments with grace and love. A page-turner in the very best sense.” (Katie Crouch, author of Girls in Trucks and Abroad)“In Beer Money, Frances Stroh takes us on a fascinating—and often chilling—journey into the world of dark privilege. In prose that is both beautiful and unflinching, Stroh tells a riveting story about the fall of an American family, an American city, and possibly the American Dream itself.” (Janis Cooke Newman, author of A Master Plan for Rescue)

From the Back Cover

A memoir of a city, an industry, and a dynasty in decline, and the story of a young artist’s struggle to find her way out of the ruins.Frances Strohf’s earliest memories are of enormous privilege: shopping trips to London and New York, lunches served by black-tied waiters at the Regency Hotel, and a house filled with precious antiques that she was forbidden to touch. Established in Detroit in 1850, the Stroh Brewing Company had become by 1984 the third-largest brewing empire in America and a brand emblematic of the American dream itself. But beneath the beautiful facade lay a crumbling foundation. Detroit’s economy collapsed with the retreat of the automotive industry to the suburbs and abroad, and, likewise, the Strohs found their wealth and legacy disappearing. As their fortune dissolved in little over a decade, the family was torn apart internally by divorce and one member’s drug bust, disagreements over the management of the business, and disputes over the remaining money they possessed. Even as they turned against one another, they could not anticipate that far greater tragedy was in store.

I did not want to put this book down. Stroh writes with a unique mixture of tenderness and brutal honesty, and her portrayal of her family and the environment around them is incredibly nuanced. She is never self-indulgent or maudlin but she does expose the unhealthy mixture of secrecy and shame that enveloped her family and contributed to its demise. That being said, the book is anything but depressing. What shines through again and again is Stroh's resilience, courage, and good humor as she navigates her way through adolescence, college and early adulthood, finally freeing herself from her own insecurities and expectations. The last chapters, set against the impending demise of both the Stroh family business and the city of Detroit as a whole, still manage to feel uplifting and empowering. What I found most compelling was Stroh's ability to see the opportunity in what others might consider to be her greatest loss. In losing her family fortune, she gains her freedom and herself. I highly recommend this book and eagerly await the sequel ;)

This is the story of the Stroh Brewing family from Detroit, but more specifically the Eric Stroh family...Frances' father. Stroh's as a family business lasted about 150 years and roughly 5 generations. In the end, though, the last 20 years was a business disaster and cost the family their family business and fortune. Frances witnessed it all growing up and details the sad story of her immediate family...mother, father and three brothers and herself of course. As the company was making one bad business decision after another, her family was being ravaged by drugs and alcohol and a lack of interest in seriously running the family business. The family fortune of roughly $700 million was squandered away as the company deteriorated and eventually was sold off at fire sale prices. Very very sad. I lived through that decline of Stroh's, but as a local citizen didn't know what was happening to this iconic Detroit business until it was all over. A good read, although very sad.

Thought it was very informative. Because we lived through the downfall of this company it was very interesting. My husband was brought over from Schlitz in Milwaukee to work for Stroh. We knew from the beginning that things were not good but because it was a private, family owned company, very little information was leaked out. This book tells of a lot of the problems and it's a very good read.

This memoir was well written and an interesting read. I grew up in Detroit and my uncle was an exec at Stroh's. I learned some things that were not apparent back in the day. Frances was honest, frank and likable. I wish her all the best.

Well written, you felt you knew the family. Growing up in the Midwest, everyone drank Stroh's, it was everywhere. It's always sad to see a family business disappear, but it is also clear that after several generations, many family members were no longer invested in the business. It also shows once again, that what looks like a perfect family on the outside, is not always the case.

Compelling read by a dynasty insider. While written well enough to conger images of the locations and people, what is missing is the emotional content. Where there might have been anger and resentment, instead, we get a description. The take away from the memoir is one business people repeatedly learn the hard way; family should never run the business long term. Failure of business during the third generation's term is almost a rule. The scenes of Detroit's deterioration are frightening but lack the real horror of the devastation to families and individuals who could not flee, who did not have resources to move. While touched on, again, only as a description one might find in a movie trailer. The subplot of substance abuse and the damage it brings, the heartbreak it generates is a common thread regardless of a family's place in industrial history and the one thing that makes this book immensely sad.

I didn't really expect too much from this book but found I was immediately drawn into it with the sensitive writing of France's Stroh. She is an eloquent writer and observer of history. The story is not only about a lost family fortune but a lost way of life for many other not so fortunate that accompanied her on her journey. A time of change in American business and an American way of life that most thought would never come to an end. A definite recommendation from me to read and surely more than just beer money in the end.

I was a little surprised by some of the negative reviews. I thought the book was well written and did not feel Frances Stroh was an "out of touch" rich kid at all. I felt she brutally honest almost to her detriment. Stroh told it like it was....the good, the bad, and the ugly of growing up in a totally dysfunctional family. I would have given the book five stars, but it was a little depressing. I especially felt sorry for the outcast, drug addict brother.

I don't read French, that being said I have owned and used Malmassari's first edition happily for over a decade. The illustrations alone are worth the cost of that book.NOWI get it all in a language I can read! Plus the new edition is updated. It has the trains from the recent wars in the Balkans. It has an expanded section on the Japanese Imperial trains. OK I'm not going to list everything it has. It is a lot easier to mention what it doesn't have. That would be nothing. I'm sure there is some really obscure train or rail trolley that isn't here. I have no idea what it is. Because ever train I've ever heard of IS here, plus a lot that I've never seen anywhere else. If you want to buy a book on armored trains buy this. Don't wait, don't hesitate. Buy this book!

I am a devotee of armored trains and have eighteen books on the subject. This one volume surpasses all my previous reads combined.

Must have! Hoping for encyclopedia of rail mounted navel guns. Waiting for Vol. 2?

A complete examination of the subject.

This book is a very complete review of armoured train operations from day one until the late seventies or there about. If you have any interest in this subject, this should be the book for you. Recommended.

Outstanding book - beautifully illustrated, comprehensive, printed on glossy paper with a quality binding. Very happy to add this to my library.

Incredibly comprehensive review of the armored trains throughout the world. Tons of wonderful pictures and schematics. My only niggling complaint is I would have like some details about the engines that pulled them...such as power, top speed, hauling capability, things along those lines.

Got what I wanted at a reasonable price.

This book gives a comprehensive process for applying “jobs to be done” in your organization, whatever kind of organization you may be in (B2C, B2B, nonprofit, etc.). The whole book is constructed around a “Roadmap” analogy, and it provides a process in 12 parts. This is PRECISELY what I was looking for – something that I could put to use. And, as a bonus, it’s well-written and often a fun read too. There’s even an example worked in a ton of detail at the back of the book. Love it.Here are the steps it lays out in its “jobs roadmap.” Each of these have tools, do’s and don’ts, examples, etc.:- Establish objectives- Plan your approach- Discover the jobs- Understand the job drivers (what makes people/organizations prioritize jobs differently, links to segmentation approaches)- Map current approaches and pain points- Identify success criteria for new solutions- Investigate obstacles to adopting those solutions- Determine the value that can be created by accomplishing those jobs well- Assess what the “real” competition is for accomplishing those jobs- Generate ideas based on those insights- Reframe your perspective- Experiment and iterateEach of these elements is a chapter. There’s a final chapter on how a Fortune 500 company rolled this out as a standard methodology, and two appendices, one on the very detailed example and one on public sector applications of the concepts. Here’s the contrast to a couple other books on this that came out around the same time:- Competing Against Luck is excellent, but it’s higher level. There’s one figure in the whole book. It’s not a toolkit, and it doesn’t pretend to be. The two books are good complements- There’s what seems to be a self-published e-book called “Jobs to be Done: Theory to Practice”, but it reads like a commercial and doesn’t tell you almost anything that you can really put to use. Their “84 step process” includes such surprising steps as recruit participants, and develop a questionnaire, without saying a single thing about how to do that. It’s literally just those words as the steps – that’s it. Not useful. This book, in contrast, doesn’t require you to buy a workshop or consulting project to actually apply the thinking.I wish more business books were like this one!

Products and services fail regularly to meet customer expectations but what is going wrong? Companies are asking customers what they want and blindly seek to deliver it; yet not so many seem to analyse what they may need and work from that data point. This is the central argument expressed by the authors, who believe that people purchase products and services to solve a specific problem or need. If a company can focus on the “jobs to be done” by a product or service for a customer, their innovation, development and sales processes can be much more successful. It all makes for an interesting read. You can be wise and say that it is an obvious argument, but if that’s the case why are so many seemingly overlooking it? By reading this book maybe you can reboot your mindset and start to look at things in a different light. The style of the book was a little challenging and it felt disjointed, meaning that it was a bit easy to skip over sections, but the central theme and guidance is the main thing.Comprehensive advice is given throughout so the reader can easily use this book as a blueprint or roadmap for future change. It would be something that you would probably be consulting on many occasions, so the complaint about a disjointed feel may fade away with many visits. It probably affects the initial, sequential read and slightly risks reader interaction and engagement. It is definitely worthy of consideration in any case, assuming that your company does not already look at what customers need!

The subtitle of this book makes clear what it’s about: how to be customer-centric. From a marketing perspective, it was really interesting to read about how Jobs to be Done thinking touches every aspect of a company. This book has some really interesting examples on how to not just create the best products, but also how to make those products really resonate with customers. There are a lot of actionable takeaways in here, including some particularly helpful ones on how to make sure you’re marketing the right solutions to the right customers. The real-life story to start each chapter makes the book fun to read, while the quick recaps for each chapter make it easy to use. For me, it was great that there were so many tools that you could start using right away to think about how to design better products. Overall, I think it’s a great book almost regardless of what your role is in a company.

Jobs to be Done is an engaging and informative read, that taught me a lot about how companies can engage with customers. After learning the Jobs theory, their idea of a roadmap was extremely useful to display how these techniques are vital in a variety of industries. Each chapter includes interesting business anecdotes and my favorite, the hands on experience the authors have from past projects. This format helps me see the roadmap they have laid out and how to use these techniques in a real organization. The book delves into not only the importance of engaging employees in thoughtful ideation but the many needs of customers and their emotional repossess that lead them to commit to a company.Jobs to be Done has sparked many valuable conversations at work about how to be innovative and engage with our customer base.

Clear set of principles explained in a simple way. Gives a good foundations to move foraged and implement customer centric innovation at small and larger scale organizations

Really liked how the author gave practical guidance which is what all teams seem to be thirsty for. Good read

Practical business books are rarer than those professing one theory or another so one taking us through the steps is really useful. What's missing though is more specificity in the examples given. It's probably challenging when using real clients but that's where the value in the book lies.

"Doctor Livingstone I presume?" is undoubtedly one of the most well known quotes in history. Very few people, however, are familiar with the history underlying the meeting of Dr. David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley. This book details the lives of the two men and the historical background through which they were thrown together. Livingstone, one of the foremost explorers of his day is searching for the source of the Nile River. Through a combination of bad luck, poor planning, disease, weather, natives, etc., Livingstone is virtually stranded on the banks of Lake Tangyanika.Henry Stanley, a newspaper correspondent undertakes a rescue mission at the direction of his publicity hungry publisher. This book details that mission and the international setting under which it took place. The perils of African exploration in the late 19th century cannot be overstated. This book does an excellent job impressing this upon the reader.I found this book very similar in style and experience to Undaunted Courage (which detailed the Voyage of Discovery undertaken by Lewis and Clark) and River of Doubt (dealing with Theodore Roosevelt's exploration of the Amazon basin. If you enjoyed either of these books, you will like this one as well. If you read this book and enjoy it, I highly recommend the other two.

The meeting of Dr David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley in the middle of Africa in 1871 is perhaps one of the most remarkable and dramatic events in history. Like the Miracle of Dunkirk, when a flotilla of civilian boats rescued the British army from Nazi forces early in WWII, the near impossible odds of success and eventual epic victory seem to be pulled from a Tolkien book rather than real history. Thus Martin Dugard’s Into Africa: The Epic Adventures of Stanley and Livingstone, is rightfully a story first and a history second. In Dugard’s story, Stanley is the true protagonist, who will survive Africa to become Livingstone’s successor as the world’s greatest explorer. However, he ends up working counter to the Doctor’s goal of a slavery-free Africa, tragically helping to make the Dark Continent... darker. The book begins at the start of Livingstone’s third and final trek into Africa in 1866. The world renowned, prototypical explorer and paragon of Victorian virtue is desperate to redeem his reputation and finances after his disastrous 1858 Zambezi expedition. He sets out to find the source of the Nile, an elusive mystery since 460 BC when the ancient Greek Herodotus failed to find the source. However, despite setting out with his usual exhilaration, writing in his journal that Africa is “a tonic to the system”, the trials of Africa quickly overwhelm the now older man. His porters desert him, taking irreplaceable supplies. He constantly fights all manner of African diseases, often so weakened by fever and dysentery that his few remaining porters have to carry him.Completely obsessed with finding the source, he relies on the Arab slave traders he despises to continue his quest. Dugard writes that “it was as if he had sold a part of his soul in the name of ambition.” After staying with the slavers for five years, he witnesses the Arabs massacre a village of Africans deep in the center of the continent. Faced with the evil of the slave trade, he leaves for the small village of Ujiji, where, sick and without supplies, he helplessly and hopelessly waits for a “good Samaritan” to rescue him.Livingstone has been gone for nearly four years and is presumed dead by many when the New York Herald’s owner, James Gordon Bennett, seeking an exciting story to distract the public from a gold market scandal, assigns Stanley, his foreign correspondent, the task of finding Livingstone. An unlikely African explorer, Stanley was born in England to a prostitute and the town drunk. Abandoned at the age of five, he was sent to live in a orphanage where he was regularly sexually violated until, at the age of 17, he escaped to America. In the States he fights for both the Confederacy and Union in the Civil War, where he discovers his talent for writing. After an ill-fated adventure in Turkey, he dedicates himself to journalism, eventually joining the staff of the Herald.Ironically, Stanley’s horrific upbringing prepares him well for the brutalities of an African expedition. After months of preparation, facing almost no chance of success, he sets out with a large caravan from Zanzibar. Struggling to lead his recalcitrant men, Stanley resorts to whipping them constantly, at one point writing in his journal “The virtue of a good whip was well tested by me”. Overcoming multiple mutiny attempts, a near fatal case of cerebral malaria, a war with “The African Bonaparte”, crocodile attacks, and worst of all the unforgiving African landscape itself, Stanley finds the strength and confidence he has always lacked. Miraculously, he also finds Livingstone. Upon their meeting he asks the now famous question, “Doctor Livingstone, I presume?”Stanley and Livingstone spend weeks together in Ujiji. Stanly, “basking in the older man’s grace”, writes of the doctor:“I grant that he is not an angel, but he approaches to that being as near as the nature of a living man will allow.”Stanley tries to convince Livingstone to return to England with him but the Doctor refuses. Weeks after one of the most improbable meetings in history, Stanley returns to Zanzibar and Livingstone continues his quest for the source. He dies shortly after, his body destroyed by years of African hardship and disease, in a village almost 600 miles south of the actual source. Stanley takes up Livingstone’s mantle as the world’s greatest explorer, finding the source of the Congo and following the dangerous river all the way to the West coast of the continent.Dugard tells this story with great care and skill. He is himself an adventurer and while researching Into Africa, he followed Stanley’s path across what is today Tanzania, getting thrown into an African prison while doing so. This is, presumably, what helps him understand his explorers’ relationship with the African landscape, leading to wonderful insights such as the following after Stanley’s near miss with a crocodile:“Africa had soothed him and calmed him and made him feel as if he were its master. But it was all a myth. The continent had no equal.”Dugard also enhances his story with an epic style. Like a gifted movie director, he cuts chapters back and forth between Stanley, Livingstone, and the rest of the world, creating dramatic scope and pacing. Little details, for instance starting each Stanley-focused chapter by counting down the “Miles to Livingstone”, gives an intense sense of urgency to his relentless quest. But Dugard never loses the intimacy of his characters. For example, when he describes Stanley “striving desperately to say exactly the right thing” when meeting Livingstone. If Dugard loses anything in his account, it is the different impacts Stanley and Livingstone will have on Africa after their meeting. Livingstone’s fervent abolitionist beliefs and his graphic description of the horrific slave trade, especially the massacre he witnesses, will spur the British Empire to use its superpower status to end the slave trade. Stanley, however, tragically uses his knowledge of the Congo to enforce the brutal Belgian regime of King Leopold II, failing to continue the true legacy of Livingstone. The two explorers serve as contrasting symbols, the best and worst of Western action in Africa.

“Doctor Livingstone, I presume?” These iconic words are culturally embedded in the psyche of Americans (and, I assume, the British as well), but I had only a vague understanding of their meaning before reading Dugard’s account of the two expeditions that would bring the phrase into household immortality—the first of which was Dr. David Livingstone’s search to once-and-for-all find the source of the Nile and the other was Henry Stanley’s search to discover whether Livingstone was still alive. If one isn’t a diehard history buff, it can be hard to maintain one’s interest in events of almost 150 years ago. Let me assure you, this isn’t the case for stories of African explanation—including “Into Africa.” If the author is at all skilled, these books read like novels with an almost improbably high level and pace of tension. That’s because almost everything in Africa in those days was working against the explorer, and most things were actively trying to kill him. A summary of threats include: a panoply of diseases (e.g. malaria, dysentery, etc.), an ark of animals and insects (e.g. poisonous snakes, lions, elephants, rhinos, etc.), and of course tribes and other humans (e.g. one could find oneself caught in the cross-fire between Arab slave traders and tribes who resented being enslaved, even if one had no stake in the fight.) And if none of those killers got one (and at least some of them always did), your men might desert you in the middle of the night while absconding with all your goods—and those goods were how one paid for both one’s food and for safe passage through tribal lands. In Dugard’s work, one sees each of these threats played and replayed, as well as a host of others from political conflicts, incompetence, and disgruntledness. It should be noted that there was almost no precedence for sending someone to look for a lost explorer—it was considered so unlikely to succeed in that era, not to mention likely getting a lot more killed. The book largely alternates chapters featuring Stanley with those featuring Livingstone. This is particularly the case once the book reaches the point at which Stanley is actively on the trail. These were very different men, but the name of each man became synonymous with courage. Stanley was an American journalist who made it to the top based solely on willingness to go places and do things other reporters wouldn’t. In fact, he had trouble making a go of his career starting out, and it wasn’t until a traumatic adventure that he developed the assertiveness to make something of himself. Livingstone was already a legend when he took on this expedition, and was arguably too far past prime to be taking on such an adventure. The men were also quite different as expedition leaders. Stanley ran his caravan with an iron fist, while Livingstone was known for being lax and easily distracted—while they were at opposite end of the spectrum in this regard, it seems likely that both would have succeeded better with more moderation. At the book’s beginning there’s a conflict at the Royal Geographical Society between Richard Burton (the explorer, not the actor) and John Speke over the source of the Nile. Livingston, a living legend, was asked to investigate and settle the issue—an objective he didn’t complete. It should be noted that finding the river’s source isn’t as easy as it sounds. Speke was correct in that the Nile reached at least to Lake Victoria (at the equator), but it wasn’t clear whether Victoria was connected to other lakes in the southern hemisphere, and—if so—how far down it went. There was a chain of lakes to the south that might have drained into the Nile, but, as it happens, flow into the Congo River.I found this to be fascinating reading. The book consists of 40 chapters divided among five parts, and so most of the chapters are quick reads and the interspersal of the Stanley and Livingstone story lines keeps the pacing going nicely. Dugard did a good job structuring the narrative.I’d recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about Stanley, Livingstone or who just want to know what it was like to be an explorer on the Dark Continent. [Fun-fact: While “dark continent” sounds blatantly racist, it turns out that the phrase was originally used in reference to the fact that so much of the map was blank—i.e. it was largely unmapped.]

Another 5 star review! Hopefully this helps you know a bit more what you're getting. If you don’t know anything about this book, you’ll want to check out the Nerdy Nummies YouTube channel, where she has videos of how to make all of these recipes. The cookbook is simply another convenient format for people that want fast access to some of her more popular recipes.INTO:Nerdy Nummies is the first book created by 'Ro' off of the youtube channel Nerdy Nummies where she makes nerdy style things to eat or drink like from video games, or outer space. Her show has even featured the past CEO of Nintendo and Neil deGrasse Tyson, which is pretty fun.THE SECOTIONS:-To start, there’s a list of everything you may end up needing. You should probably just get these as needed.-Immediately after that there is a basics section where Ro shows how she makes most of the basic desserts. The 3 I’ve made so far have been phenomenal, (brownies, chocolate cake, pound cake). You do want to make sure you’re using quality ingredients for things like flour and coco, you’ll taste them in the end. This section makes the book worth it, it’s so hard to find a cook book that consistently has good recipes if you don’t have a good recommendation.-After this she gets into more complicated recipes in a few sections such as Math and Science, and Fantasy desserts. These can go from mixing a few ingredients to a bit complicated so chose wisely.-The final sections are things like acknowledgments, conversion charts, resource guide, cutout templates, and an Index. The final page is a bit about the author.MY EXPERIENCE WITH THIS BOOK-My experience has been very positive, as I mentioned before the basics are really incredible and I’m excited to create dessert style monuments for games and other things I like. I bought the book because I like the Youtube channel and want faster access to the recipes, but surprisingly so far my favorite part of the book has been the basic recipes.

Very cute book, awesome ideas. Be careful when you bake the chocolate chip cookies, there is a misprint. Ours came out VERY salty and after watching Ro's video, we realized the book calls for salted butter and 2 teaspoons baking soda (it should be 1 teaspoon according to the video and the butter was not specified so maybe try unsalted butter).

I ordered this for my 12 year old daughter and she cried tears of joy when it came! This book is AMAZING!!! Rosanna Pansino you have knocked this out of the park! My daughter is also a visual learning and this book has so many great step by step photographs! Every Recipe has 6 photographs. There are templates, a list of all the tools you need, and it's easy to read. You will NOT be disappointed, as my daughter said she could look at this book for hours and we can't wait to try out the lava cake for her 12th birthday! We are looking forward to having her book signed at the event hear in Orlando next week. Thank you for encouraging my daughter to keep baking! One happy Mommy here!

My 12 year old sister loves to watch Nerdy Nummies on YouTube all the time. She got me hooked, and most of the time, I put off studying for my college lectures to watch Ro bake! This will be her Christmas present, and cannot wait! There are some really sweet recipes in this cookbook and anyone of any skill level can bake them! This is a fantastic and well done cookbook Ro! You have outdone yourself! Anyone who loves to bake or just loves Nerdy Nummies, this cookbook is for you! What are you waiting for? Go buy it!!

This book is absolutely beautiful. It has very nice and high quality full color pages, is easy to follow along with, well laid out, and sturdy. The decorating ideas in it are adorable and there are very nice photos of the different steps to give readers a good visual aid to help them recreate the recipes at hand. It also has QR codes to scan with your phone for easy access to templates for recipies! Never fear though, if you lack a smart phone it does have templates in the back to use as well, you'll just need to scan them rather than print them!I'm absolutely pleased with my purchase and would reccomend it to any of my friends!

I bought this for my 10 year old daughter. She loves it! It's everything my nerd child could ask for. As a matter of fact, she made the hamburger cupcakes for a family reunion and everyone adored them. I love how seeing her become so involved with baking and decorating.Side note: Many of the recipes can be substituted for premade box mix if your short on time or ingredients. That's what we did with the cupcakes.

Love, love, LOVE this cookbook. The pictures are fun and vibrant, the recipes are adorable, and the everything is laid out very well in an easy-to-follow format. To be perfectly honest, my girlfriend and I will probably never make anything found in this book ourselves, but it's handy for when her niece comes over to visit us. It also makes a fabulous gift for anyone with a little "nerd" in their soul. My girlfriend's niece introduced us to Rosanna Pansino's YouTube channel, and we just think it's the cutest thing we've ever seen. Very fun and very well done!

the projects there are nice and there are some creative decorating ideas. however you should not treat this like a traditional cook book. the recipes as followed are wrong. one of them had 1/2 the quantity of an ingredient completely wrong. there are no tips on how to do some of the frosting work. exe the comic book cookies. no tips on making some of the harder frosting decorations, kept braking. the macarons recipe as followed was a flop. had to youtube a recipe and found it was vastly different. and the youtube recipe came out great. so if you pick this up, it's a very good IDEA book.

Before reading Michael D O’Brien’s musings on the Second Coming of Christ, titled The Apocalypse: Warning, Hope and Consolation, it might help to listen to Adele singing Skyfall. Here is the first stanza of that apocalyptic song:This is the endHold your breath and count to tenFeel the earth move and thenHear my heart burst again.Michael D O’Brien has written a perceptive, wise and witty book about the Apocalypse. He points out that before the Second Coming, Christians will suffer severe persecutions at the hands of the Antichrist and his assistant the Beast. Christians are indeed suffering persecutions in China, North Korea and Muslim countries, and Christians are under attack even in liberal western democracies for their views on abortion, birth control, euthanasia and homosexual marriage. O’Brien’s point is that we can’t really tell if the end is near, but that it is better to be safe by betting it is than to be sorry.Michael D O’Brien is an excellent writer, who combines wisdom, common sense and clarity to write compelling works. His fiction is first-rate. And he provides readers with many insights, such as:“Storytelling universally communicates the following in some manifestation or other: (1) Life is beautiful and mysterious – and filled with perils. (2) Man is a mystery to himself, yet he may come to know himself, in part, through reflection on the meaning of his personal experiences, in overcoming peril and by searching for the truth.”Materialism is the basic philosophy of modern liberals, and it is inherently political, for it seeks to present to mankind a coherent vision of the meaning and purpose of life. That it fails miserably in this regard, at enormous cost in terms of human suffering and death, yet continues to grow and devour much of the Western world, should alert us to the fact that Western civilization is crumbling about us.In a footnote, O’Brien cites this quotation from a Father Brown detective story written by the great G K Chesterton: “The first effect of not believing in God is that you lose your common sense.” That’s just for starters. In the end, you lose everything.“Modern liberals proclaim that the only truly grave sin is “intolerance” by which is meant making people feel uncomfortable about themselves. Hand in hand with this is the endless vilification of those who are doctrinally correct.” What is ironic is that when liberals vilify Christians they make Christians feel uncomfortable about themselves, and that is intolerant, so liberals are violating their own “Prime Directive”.Another memorable paragraph mentioned that only the Roman Catholic Church has the capacity to block the immoral agenda of the totalitarian, secular, materialist, and hedonist States that are becoming more widespread in the world. In a way, that’s sad, but it’s also Good News, since the founder of the Catholic Church is all good, all knowing and all powerful. If you care about stopping the great evil of Antichrist and his army, read this book for enlightenment and encouragement, then join the Church militant in the battle to save the world. This book lives up to its title.

This is a sober and trenchant analysis of our age in light of Scriptural and Church teaching on the end times. You will not get a systematic treatment of eschatology in this short book but you will benefit from O'Brien's wisdom on the spirit of our age and how to do what Jesus told us to do-- which is watch for and expect both opposition and his coming. The last two chapters may prove to be the go-to enchiridion for believers who find themselves living through the great apostasy and reign of the antichrist. ThIs is a short work but many passages merit thoughtful rumination.

Faithful exposition of apocalyptic message of Holy Scripture.
