I'm only in the early part of the book, but I am learning a lot about the South before and during the war. Sadly, many try to make the Civil War into a simple North/South, Black/White and Right/Wrong proposition. I've lived in the West, the Midwest, the Northeast and the South and traveled extensively around the US (and the world for that matter). I've always found there is something special about the people in the South. Nicer? Happier? More content? I've never been able to put my finger on it but this book is touching on the explanation or history of the people. Enjoying the read so far!!

This is a very interesting book about a very determined man. Until I read this book I had never heard of Jack Hinson and I guess he preferred it that way. Union forces murdered and mutilated two of his teenage sons and Jack swore revenge which he got in spades. He wasn't some flaming secessionist at the start of the War Between the States, but Union army actions made him a valuable weapon during the hostilities. He operated completely independently of Southern forces although he had the unspoken support and sympathy of his neighbors, even though there was a very substantial reward for his apprehension. He personally killed so many Union soldiers he lost track of the number. He made Union officers and NCOs his target and took out, perhaps, over 100. He was the original Sergeant York. If Jack Hinson decided he was going to kill you, you were a dead man walking.

This is a good Civil War history book. It contains plenty of "backfill" of extended information that gives a context for the action in and around Stewart County, Tennessee. My second great-grandfather was captured at Ft. Donelson and imprisoned in Indianapolis after the surrender of the fort, so I am always on the lookout for information regarding this battle and the region.Interestingly, the people (local historians) who live in the immediate area have a somewhat different view and understanding of Jack Hinson. He was known as something of a troublemaker even before the war. I have spoken with some who question his "hero" status that seems to be the product of this book.Still, it's a great read and full of local color and interesting info about life "Between the Rivers." I consider this book to be a treasure. I'm glad I now know about Jack Hinson and his dedication to his family and country.The book goes into a little too much detail about inconsequential things and drags the story out a bit much. I still stand by my 5 star rating though. It's refreshing to read a book about the True South and the truth about the real causes of the war to prevent southern independence. And it is great to know about Jack Hinson and his law of vengeance thst exacted on those Yankees.

It's a truly interesting story about a very interesting man. However, the author spends the first 150 pages of the book really setting up the story about Jack Hinson. However, if you're a history buff, particularly interested in The War Between the States, this is a good read. The author does use his literary license liberally at times, but he's sort of forced to, as Mr. Hinson didn't keep a journal, and the story must be "built" from historical records and family stories. For instance, I'm sure that Mr. Hinson missed a few shots as well, but none of those are mentioned. Worth the read.

This book was extremely educational and offered me a view of how the Civil War affected the area that I was raised in that I had never been exposed to before. For that it deserves 5 stars. The story is tragic and riveting and the educational value of this book is high. The only issue that I ran across throughout the book is the propensity of the author to repeat himself, which I think falls more on the editor than the author. Overall, this is a great read, is very thoroughly researched and is extremely interesting. Considering the fact that there was virtually no historical record of the revenge exacted by Jack Hinson makes it an even more incredible feat of investigative research by the author. The one star reduction is for the editor and is in no way a reflection on the quality of the author's work.

Very good book, about a great man who like so many in the South at the time faced many hardships sadness and unmanageable atrocities on his family and others.Jack Hinson was neutral at the start of the war. But when Yankee Calvary captured. Executed without trial, dragged bodies though town and cut off and hung heads on gate post in front of family and children. All Hell broke lose with Jack Hinson, a true hero.

Diligent research and not boring. Back story of the geography is very interesting. Land 'tween the Rivers (now LBL) is a magical place.Well written with excellent analysis.Personally, a little too much description of the scenery, but not flowery. Great for urbanites unfamiliar with country life.Too bad there is so little recognition of such an historical figure.I'm really pleased his custom rifle survived the war and is in good hands.

I have found much use for this book. It has great line drawings just like in the authors other works, and the information is peak. Very useful for identifying particular parts of plants, and helps understand many terms used in botany books. Recomended for anyone who is more serious about plants than just gardening.

I do like this manual very much. However since downloading it, I have changed phones. Apparently there is a limit as to how many devises it can be used on. Well, I can't find any of my devises that have this downloaded from the cloud. Its in the cloud, but I keep getting an error message saying "The book cannot be downloaded because license limit exceeded." The one phone that it MIGHT be on is so old Kindle won't even open. Why doesn't kindle transfer these that are downloaded to new phones? Pay another $42 for this book that I do have, but can't access? Please help?

If you are at all serious about keying out plants it's worth the money to buy this book. There are illustrations to show the many different descriptive terms used to distinguish one plant from another. Highly recommend it!

Excellent documentation and illustrations for those interested in the subject and especially for botanical artists.

If you can make it through chapter four, you have more stamina than I do.One notable shortcoming of this part of the book is the absence of cost of living information. It says that Mexico City housing is expensive (true) but this is also the case for Todos Santos and some other places discussed. It would be worth knowing that although San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato are only 75 km. apart, most things in San Miguel cost double what they cost in Guanajuato.The book speaks highly of Cuernavaca, but anyone considering it as a place to live should be aware that it has a long-term high crime rate. This really should have been mentioned.And speaking of San Miguel de Allende, it says that the local newspaper has an astrology column. Excuse me, but should someone considering moving there and forking over $250,000 for a house (yes, that's what they cost) be influenced by an ASTROLOGY COLUMN?However, chapter nine addresses the requirements and steps involved in immigrating to Mexico. As far as I can tell, it's accurate. Anyone who has decided to take this step should read this chapter VERY carefully.Chapter eleven deals with the ins and outs of car ownership in Mexico, including getting a driver's license. Again, pretty accurate, but I was surprised that no mention was made of using UCD (the Democratic Campesinos Union) license plates as a way of avoiding the complexities of registering foreign vehicles.The remainder of the book is useful information on a lot of topics; the idiosyncrasies of using telephones, health care, banking, buying and selling homes, and food. Chapter 24, "Handy guides", contains an interesting and sometimes amusing Spanish lesson.

Other than that annoyance, a solid book.

My issues are health insurance, vehicle licensing, immigration procedures, and location to live. This book covers all that and a lot more. Best money I have spent on a book.

He's dropped off at a vacant apartment in the well-known, stately, old Dakota apartments on Central Park West. After a little practice he finds he can step out into the cold 1882 NY winter at Central Park West. His first trip is about a day. Ensuing trips are a bit longer. Si finds the year and simplicity of 1882 New York very endearing.Here the true brilliance of this book begins. The author's research had to have been incredible. Nothing is missed in the descriptions of places and people as Si travels in the past. The descriptive nature carries right to people's expressions and details of their clothing.Si makes a few trips back to that time. Each trip he becomes more and more involved with events and people of that era. Enter Julia. Julia quickly becomes Si's love interest, though Si must be very careful not to alter any events in the past; lest they have an effect on the future.Si, at one point, brings Julia back to the 20th century for one day; she then returns to 1882. What to do? Invite her to spend her life in this present world? Go their separate ways? Maybe Si will choose to leave once more and spend his life with Julia in 1882 permanently? All are possibilities in this well thought out, brilliantly written time travel piece. It's unlike any time travel you may have come across previously. The pages are also peppered, here and there, with sketches of people and places of this long ago time.If one can compare the descriptive nature of this book, it could be compared in description, love story, and time travel to King's 11/22/63.

This is a time travel book but without the bells and whistles of technology. Simon was selected by a super secret off the books government entity with the information that he was special, very few people passed the entrance requirements and until he did pass, he would never know the details of the project for which he was being recruited. It is not a spoiler to let readers know that after a lengthy orientation procedure, Simon entered training to use a specific method for time travel, a sort of advanced yoga or meditation method that required a lot of information about the desired time and place of the destination. The information was gained through a lot of research by teams assigned to the secret organization. Simon then entered into an appropriate trance and woke at the time and place desired.As with any good tale, there are conflicts. The huge conflict at the center of this book is the effect on changes in the past. How will they affect the present? Can there be changes in the past that will make significant changes in the present? Are all changes in the past significant to the present? How can we tell?Then there is an ethical conflict. Will military forces take charge of the project? How about business interests? Or will this project only be used for good (whatever that is)?There is a romantic interest. Julia, Simons’ love interest in the past, seems to be in an abusive relationship. Can Simon rescue her? How will that affect the present? Possibly due to Julia, Simon develops a love for the past and thinks about staying there. Can that be done?All of these complex parts make for a very entertaining story, but they are not the best part of the book. The description in very detailed minutia of daily life in New York around 1880 will appeal to lovers of New York and historians interested more in social customs. Details of how to wash and attach a collar (for men) and the various layers of clothing necessary for modesty (women) are interesting. The details of building construction, the operation of firefighting teams, the history of 1880s disasters, and the familiar names of the startup ventures of some of today’s familiar businesses will keep the reader going from page to page without regard to time (pun intended).And there are illustrations, giving the reader the sense of reality that being there is possible, at least for Simon.

I recently read Stephen King's time travel novel 11/22/63 and couldn't put it down. My all-time favorite book. My friend recommended Time and Again, given my love of 11/22/63. TIme and Again was fascinating and, even though not exactly historically accurate, really gave the sense of what it was like to live in the 80's (1880's that is!). The time travel actually seemed so plausible. Yes, I had a few questions like what currency he brought with him (wouldn't people think it odd that his dollars were from 1970?) but all in all, it was interesting and made me really want to go back in time to a more simple day! I work in downtown NY so it was also interesting to get some history of the buildings I pass every day!

I must confess that I read this book 30+ years ago, but it has always stuck in my memory as an interesting book. I saw one of my co-workers reading it and told him that I remembered a book by that title from years earlier. I gave him some of the plot and he confirmed it. It's next up on my "to read again" list.This is initially set in New York in the 1980's. Time travel has recently been discovered. Something happened in NYC a century earlier that needs resolving in order to preserve the present. A man elects to go back in time, only to find that life a century earlier is kinder and gentler. Should he stay or return to this present?

I love John MacArthur. I am an avid reader of his work and listener of his interpretation of Gods Word. As a fairly new Christian woman, I have a strong background in feminist theory and ironically child and family studies. I have often struggled with my identity in the church as a woman. It has seemed like an odd form of oppression but as I have studied scripture and read about church history and the woman's role I am encouraged and comforted. I honestly read this book in one read. I believe that it will be used and should be used as a study with a accountability partner or bible study group. I love the questions, reviews and considerations at the end of the chapters. Also, I am always throughly impressed by the culture implications that MacArthur uses to illuminate the scripture. I love it. Looking forward to reading and sharing with a friend.

I really liked this book for its straight to the point manner, but scriptural based. Excellent explanations of the meaning of words and the cultural aspects of the biblical timeframe in which they were written. It also gives today's women encouragement and understanding of what the Bible says for a Woman's role.

Really like Dr. MacArthur writing. Sometimes too wordy but very easy to read, understand and gives Godly reasons to apply to one's heart and life.

MacArthur captures the essence of the highest calling given to any human...motherhood. This book is well written and the author uses only scripture to prove his points. A must read for every woman wondering what God has in store for her or as in my season of life, validating my life's work and worth.

Excellent Biblical perspective on God's role for women. This study serves as a guide to a great discussion on the roles of women and how Satan has twisted and perverted the truth in the world we live in. We used this last summer for a study and we had 40+ women in attendance who all came away with "Wow"

My two grand daughters are big fans of Dan and Phil. They saw them on their US tour and were excited about their second book. I got them each a book and after looking through it myself found it to be a very well done photo gallery and stories of Dan and Phil's adventures from their tour. I gave the books to my grand daughters tonight, Christmas Eve, and they loved them. They think I'm a pretty cool grandpa.

The stars are according to my daughter. I haven't read the book, but she loves it, and it's just what she wanted. It is a little cheaper here at Amazon than to order from Dan & Phill directly so that makes me happy. It seems to be all the rage with the tweens/teens so it must be good, at least in their eyes. My daughter is 13, if you need a reference, a good gift for her age group.

I absolutely loved it! I had so much fun reading through all of their adventures! There are so many fun pictures and funny anecdotes in the book! If you love Dan and Phil then you will love it! Also, it definitely has way more pictures than I thought it would and a lot of cute ones! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who was thinking about buying the book!! It also makes a great present for anyone who has friends or kids that love Dan and Phil!
