Despite not being updated since 2002, this is a highly useful book for peri- and menopausal women. It is best for women who want to get the info on what the heck is going on and how to feel better ASAP without lot of psychological or spiritual "woo" but with a great amount of useful info organized for efficiently determining what to do to feel better.This is what I wish New Menopausal Years (the Wise Woman Way) had been, and it has a tighter focus and utility than Menopause For Dummies. It has a wealth of information delivered objectively but in a nicely targeted way (with TONS of citations and references). It explains what estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and the androgens do in the body, and what symptoms you can have when any or all of these hormones go haywire during perimenopause or after menopause has officially begun. It gives you an idea of what is to come after your periods have stopped and it has a thorough and clear glossary of terminology and chapters on self-care, nutrition, herbal remedies, and hormone replacement therapy, as well as an index and a list of resources. It just has a few flaws, which I'll get to.The author has a conversational writing style which is very easy to read. His recommended treatment protocols include herbs, homeopathics, and prescription conventional hormone replacement therapy (depending on what works best for your menopause type) as well as chapters on self-care and nutrition. In other words, he is treatment agnostic and advocates whatever works best for the patient, without bias for or against conventional medicine and with a sober acknowledgement that while there are risks with HRT, they must be balanced with the benefits. What's really great is the open-mindedness to the complementary and alternative medicine treatments, including nutrition. I am hoping to avoid HRT so getting info on C&A treatments (herbs) and nutrition is very important to me.This is a great book to explain and describe what each of these hormones (estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone) do in the female body, and what kind of symptoms you can develop when the levels of one, two, or all three are high or low. But it doesn't overwhelm you with information. The author uses example patients to describe the different types of menopause, which is a useful convention for elucidating the problems and the solutions. Once I found my type and read that section and the description of common symptoms, it *really* rang true and captured the misery of the symptoms I've been having, why, and what to do about it.As a registered nurse, I really appreciate the author's ability to use jargon free language to explain how the endocrinology of sex and adrenal hormones works (or doesn't) during perimenopause and menopause, without overwhelming the reader with information. This book addresses the specifics of what is causing your symptoms and how to relieve them without being either as wide-ranging or as boring as Menopause For Dummies, and it isn't loaded with New Age "woo" like New Menopausal Years (The Wise Woman Way) -- perhaps because it is more tightly focused. I also really appreciated the citations and references; they make it feel like the book is a real reference and not just mostly the author's opinions.In a way, the closest and best comparison to this book that I can think of is not a menopause book, it's a book on treatment of the different types of depressions (the book Beyond Prozac -- which lamentably had only one edition), because of the way both authors are treatment agnostic and recommend what combination of conventional medicine &/or supplements &/or nutrition works best for the different types.However, there are a few caveats.1. Scoring the menopausal type questionnaire is very confusing (as evidenced by the many reviews that say just that). I understand the author developed this tool to help women figure out whether their symptoms are related to low, normal, or high levels of each hormone (estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone), and therefore that sort of requires a matrix or spreadsheet to figure out the scoring. And my impression, from how that section of the book is written, is that he tried to simplify it as much as possible. But still, I had to try scoring my questionnaire three times before I was relatively confident I got it right. It's just kind of confusing and difficult, and since that is the main point of the book before you can figure out how to treat your type, I feel like that should be less confusing, clearer, and have less potential for terminally frustrating the reader.Just keep trying. It took me 3 tries before I was confident I got it right.2. The book refers one to the author's web site for various resources, such as an "automated' version of the questionnaire, and a list of labs that do direct to consumer saliva testing. But the author's web site is confusing and difficult to navigate, so I never found the automated version of the questionnaire. (By automated, I thought he meant that you fill the questionnaire out on the web site, and it scores it FOR you. I never found that. All I could find was the questionnaire in PDF format for download. And I could never find the list of labs that do saliva testing.The web site needs a major overhaul by a professional web designer. The current web site looks like a cross between a boilerplate online shopping presence and the mid-term project for a college level web design course. Not that impressive. There is a lot of useful information, but it is not well organized, requiring the end user to do a lot of hunting around and clicking through, and there are no 'breadcrumbs' and few navigation bars to help you go back to where you were (aside from the Back button in your browser).It is also designed to sell you his herbal and enzyme supplement blends, which are unbelievably expensive compared to what you can find at other much easier-to-use online herb/supplement shops. The entire web site was a real disappointment after the book and makes the author look like he's just shilling for his own products -- which was not the feel I got from the book at all. It doesn't invalidate the info from the book... it just sort of cheapens it.3. The saliva testing question: given that hormone levels fluctuate on a circadian rhythm, the utility of saliva testing versus serum (blood) testing is questionable. Why not test urine for levels of hormones, then? I mean, that is reliable enough -- and quantitative! -- to indicate pregnancy! (Saliva testing is also not the gold standard and insurances companies usually won't cover it... another reason why the FDA does not approve saliva testing for hormone baseline or monitoring, though they don't prevent you from getting it yourself.)~~~Aside from these caveats, this is still the best book on menopause I've found. As with most things, you have to take what works for you and leave the rest. But this book -- if you can use the questionnaire and the scoring formula correctly, which is not guaranteed -- will arm you with the information you need to take non-prescription herbs or homeopathic remedies to help with your peri- or menopausal symptoms. It will also tell you what herbs to avoid.

This book was the best thing that ever happened to me during my menopause. I just gave the book to someone else, and realized I had never left a review. If the author gets to read these reviews. I would like to tell him how grateful I was for his book, and how much the information helped me. Don't be put off by the semi-negative reviews about the test any difficulty you have getting it all scored correctly will lead you to information that will help you immensely.

Absolutely a wonderful book. Very informative for women going thru this stage in their life. Comes with a questionaire and shows you what type you are and all the options of what you can do. I highly recommend this book to all women as it is a great resource and can be taken with you to your doctor for further help and treatment. This is my 5 th doctor trying to treat this problem as with most doctors they seem to treat them all the same. . This book explains one treatment doesnt fit all women and by taking this book to your doctor, you are opening their eyes and educating them. After 5 long suffering years of symptoms, finding this book and a new doctor I am on the road to feeling myself again. I found this book by accident while doing research online and was the best accident to ever happen.

This book outlines the different things that women experience beautifully that isn't told to them. How many of us think we are going crazy only to find we have to keep digging until we find out what took over our bodies! Great job Collins for understanding a woman's frustrating world! The math test is a bit confusing and mine came up different than the actual blood tests I got done but this book gave me a foundation to absorb what is going on to make an educated decision on how I could tackle my symptoms.

This book became irresistible when a large, well-illustrated article about it appeared in the New York Times ("Inside the Black Budget" by William J. Broad) on April 1. The book came in the mail today. It is very good. Folks who are interested in the subject might really like it, but, as the spread in the Times indicates, there is a general audience also for a look behind the green door if the presentation is accessible. In the case of this modest book, it is small in size and just right in length. The author, Trevor Paglen, states that this book is not intended to be a reference for historians and with that important caveat, I recommend it highly. Mr. Paglen, a candidate for a PhD in geography at UC Berkeley, treats the subject with respect and seems to have enjoyed himself, as do the patch designers and the people who approved those designs. His next book (and his thesis), says the Times, is about secret bases and "undisclosed locations" in the US. It is called Blank Spots on the Map: The Dark Geography of the Pentagon's Secret World and will be published by Dutton next February (2009). While you're waiting, have a look at Top Secret Tourism: Your Travel Guide to Germ Warfare Laboratories, Clandestine Aircraft Bases and Other Places in the United States You're Not Supposed to Know About by Harry Helms, which is also recommended.

I found myself gaping as I read this book, by turns astonished that classified personnel could get away with having a sense of humor on the job and cackling madly at the inside jokes. There appears to be a rich language of symbolism in the patches' patterns, and many an afternoon could be whiled away by the reader attempting to piece it together. I've already recommended this book to several friends, and I can't recommend it highly enough to anyone curious about military heraldry or black projects.

What a great book! If you are a conspiracy nut, military historian, believe in aliens, collect military artifacts, are into aviation, or any of the above, this may be a really fun book for you!This is not a dense or didactic book, but rather, it is a picture book with a paragraph or two about each entry. A good supplement to a more serious collection, or a unique coffee table book.

I love this fascinating little book. It is a tiny fact-filled volume, with a patch from a different top-secret test flight or satellite reconnaissance unit on each page. Where possible, the author describes what the patch symbolism represents and where the unit was located.This is a thrilling little book for anyone that was involved in these or similar "black" programs themselves, and maybe even more intriguing for civilians. Not the dimensions of the book - it is very small; the patches are photographed at approximately life size and each page is not much bigger than each patch.This book focuses mainly on Air Force and NRO secret units. I'd love to see one of these for military intelligence and NSA units.

The Black Projects that are covered in this book are those that you would expect, not the ones I was hoping for. Almost all of the patches are from now declassified projects that took place between 1980-2000 and they are vastly in the field of aeronautics. Trevor Paglen gets about as close as any one could I suppose without being destroyed, and for that I respect his work. I guess I was hoping for more glimpses, more of a deeper overall survey of the special projects world. I certainly had my hopes too high for such a tiny book with such a narrow focus. If he had added more conjecture to entertain the reader he would have reduced its believability. This book is worth reading if you can borrow a copy (it will take you a couple hours to read), but it's only worth buying if you are a military historian or are an avid patch collector.

A great summary coffee table book that introduces the esoteric symbols, language & mythology of the top secret black world. Patches of squadrons that, supposedly don't exist, a lot are some that have been declassified, but a great view into the cult ure :)

The book itself is alright, the patches which are supposed to represent "black op" projects are well presented and each has a story to go along with them. The problem is that there is no way independently verify the stories.I recently had the opportunity to listen to a presentation by the author, it was based on this book but also covered his other books (which IMHO are much more interesting and easier to independently verify) which were written on government rendition programs and secret bases.The book overall is good but the stories sound more like vet stories you would hear in the VFW over a couple of pints.

This is a fun and unique book and worth picked up for any patch or military enthusiast. This in the only books I have seen written on military morale patches. The cover has an actual embroidered patch affixed to it. It is a bit out of date and deals almost exclusively with Air Force unit's, the patches are good and the write ups are pretty well done. I would like to see a second version and would love to see this as the first in a series. But I don't know if the military patch collector is a big enough demographic to support it. That said if you find this at all fascinating or interesting its worth picking up.

I like to do pen and ink sketches. These tiny books can be carried anywhere along wiht a micron pen you are ready to do a sketch anywhere.

These are soooo cute! But OMG, they stink to high heaven. Gonna have to find a way to air them out A LOT before I even think about putting in my purse or any other closed anything. Got Monet's Water Lilys, and Van Gogh's Starry Night, and Irises. All adorable, but smell strongly!

Very cute little doodle pad. I tend to keep paper around for little notes and stuff I need to remember, and instead of filling up and wasting a huge notebook..I can use this and keep it in my purse. I like the small size and unlined paper. Great little notepad.

These are cute little notebooks but, for some reason, I didn't realize they were so tiny! I'm keeping them because I can keep one in my purse for notes on the fly but I don't think they will work for the original purpose - carrying on a week long retreat for study and contemplation. I wish I could find the exact same style in a somewhat larger size.

I find it fascinating that Vincent Van Gogh only sold one painting in his lifetime yet his paintings sell for millions in auctions today. As a former art student I have always loved impressionist artist and Vincent Van Gogh has been one of my favorites. I would never be able to afford one of his paintings at auction, even if my dreams but this is such a nice reproduction of Van Gogh's painting "Irises" on a pocket size notebook.The colors are very vibrant - beautiful purple Irises and various shades of green leaves on both the front and back of this notebook. The pages are unlined and I like that because sometimes I like to pass time and sketch while I am waiting at an appointment and I prefer there not to be lines and when I want to take notes, it really doesn't bother me that there are no lines. I think that unlined pages add to the authenticity of this Van Gogh notebook.It is small enough to toss in my purse and doesn't take up very much room at all. I really like it and noticed that there is a few more of these small notebooks with reproductions of Van Gogh painting and I am going to order a couple more.This was a personal purchase.

I bought two copies and gave one to our new neighbors from California with an apology for the snow and freezing rain we've been having. This book will help us fine the truly interesting things in Columbus, Ohio that we might have missed and that our new neighbors will be pleased to discover!

Awesome book loaded with fun places. My only complaint is that Whitehall isn't mentioned in the Town & Country section (all of the other suburbs and neighborhoods get their mention.) That's pretty minor though. I highly recommend to anyone who loves C-bus!

A very interesting and amusing small book that would make a great gift for anyone who has lived in Columbus, Ohio or is interested in the area. Includes many details currently not known by most residents. I knocked one star off because it needs a little better proofing (one ex.: stating "E. Broad" instead of "W. Broad" when referring to the Hilltop area -- also using the term "most unique" a number of times).Otherwise, a fun read with lots of photos!

I've lived in Columbus for many years, and I learned things I never knew about my adopted hometown. The chapters are concise and fun to read. This would make a great gift for someone who loves to learn.

I loved this book. I spent my childhood visiting family in Ohio and never knew about these wonderful places. Can’t wait for my next visit !

Enjoyed reading about some of the unique history around the Columbus area. Great read!

This book is a collection of speeches by John Bogle primarily between 1998 and 2000. After reading half the book, I skimmed the last 200 pages because it became very redundant. Although each speech gives the reader another nugget of information about index funds, it could have been condensed into a much smaller presentation. That's why I would recommend "The Little Book of Common Sense Investing", also by Bogle. I didn't pan the book because it will probably have great value to Bogle scholars and anybody studying passive index investing. That said, if you enjoy essays, this book may be for you.

This is a well written book with lots of wisdom and insights. Once again John Bogle has knocked the ball out of the park with his infinite wisdom.

The Bible for Investing. Bogle is a giant in the field of investing. Vanguard has added tremendous value for investors, which is not the norm for most mutual fund companies and investment advisors.

Great book, still in the process of reading it however I thought it better reinforced my knowledge about the finance industry overall and gave me a wider array of an outlook. What Is Climate Change?     In the Canadian Arctic, winter used to come early. By early November, temperatures dipped below zero. Snow covered the ground. Hudson Bay became covered in solid ice.   Hundreds of polar bears lumbered onto the frozen water, making their way out to open ocean. All winter long, they swam from ice floe to ice floe. They mated. They hunted and fished. There were plenty of ringed seals to eat.   When summer finally came in August, the ice melted. The polar bears swam back to land. The males play-fought. The females watched over their young cubs. Months passed. Polar bears lounged on tundra—still-frozen ground—using little energy. They waited for cold weather. They waited to go out to sea again.   Polar bears are strong, majestic creatures, standing up to nine feet tall and weighing up to one thousand pounds. They are built for the cold. Their snow-white coat is thick, with a double layer of fur. Also, a layer of fat lies just under their skin, keeping them extra warm. For months, polar bears have to live off this fat, gained from winter feedings on the ice. When they’re on land, they barely eat.   In early November 2016, the polar bears were still on land. There was no sea ice on Hudson Bay. Weeks passed. By December, there was still barely any ice at all. So the polar bears had to wait longer to return to the sea. Some paced back and forth along the shoreline. Others lay on the ground, not doing much at all.   The warmer climate affected the polar bears in important ways. In the 1980s, Hudson Bay bears were bigger and rounder, well fed. Recently they’ve been losing weight and becoming weaker. That’s because with fewer weeks on ice, their hunting season has become shorter. They have less food. In Hudson Bay, polar bear numbers have dropped. The bears have fewer cubs. And not all cubs survive.   In 2016, the water in Hudson Bay didn’t freeze until December 12. That was very late. “Sea ice is finally forming,” one scientist reported. “The polar bears are moving quickly offshore.”   Even on ice, however, the polar bears had a tougher time. There was more water between floes. The polar bears were already weakened by long months on land. And yet they had to swim longer distances to get from place to place to hunt.    Observers followed one female who had to swim nine days straight to reach an ice floe.   The Arctic—the polar bears’ habitat—is changing. Temperatures have gone up about 3 degrees Celsius (°C), or 5.4 degrees Fahrenheit (°F), since 1900.   The ice cover is shrinking, too. In 2017, it was 30 percent smaller than it was twenty-five years earlier. And each year, the remaining ice cover is melting faster and faster.   The fact is that our entire planet is getting warmer, not just the Arctic. Certain gases in the atmosphere—“greenhouse gases”—hold in heat, keeping it from escaping into space. Higher temperatures bring changes in plant and animal life. In sources of food and water. In rainfall and snowfall, floods and droughts. Habitats around the world are at risk.   It’s all part of climate change. Chapter 1: Things Are Heating Up    First of all, what is climate?   Before you dress each day, do you check the climate to figure out what to wear? No, you check the weather.   Weather changes often, sometimes in the space of a couple of hours. Climate doesn’t. Climate is the weather over long periods of time.   Scientists who study climate look at weather patterns. They need to measure temperature and precipitation (rainfall and snowfall). They’ll look to see if there are changes over thirty years, fifty years, or even one hundred years. By studying these long periods, they see whether conditions on Earth are changing.   Scientists have taken measurements from weather stations around the world, in hot places and cold ones. And the average temperatures in all these places have gone up almost 2°F since the 1880s. That may not sound like a big difference, but it is.   Earth has been having fewer cold days and more warm days. There have been fewer record low temperatures and more record highs. Even freezing-cold places are getting warmer, and not just in the Arctic. It’s also happening in Antarctica, by the South Pole. Ice caps, glaciers, and ice sheets—all forms of land ice—are melting.   When land ice melts, it runs into the sea. The additional water from the Arctic Ocean ends up flowing into all the oceans. This causes sea levels to rise around the world. On average, levels have risen eight inches since the early 1900s and about two inches since 2000.    Again, that doesn’t seem like much. But these changes in the Arctic have an impact on weather patterns for the entire planet. It’s like a teeny, tiny spark that sets off a fire.    In Alaska, coastal villages have already seen dramatic change. Homes are threatened by flooding and erosion—that’s water wearing away the shoreline. Sea ice is melting. So is permafrost, the permanently frozen soil just under the ground. The permafrost even feels different. It’s springy, which causes houses to collapse into the water.   The people of an island town called Shishmaref have voted to move their village. It will take years and much money to do it. But the people are ready. “The land is going away,” one man explained.    What about places that are already hot? Higher temperatures are bringing changes in these areas, too. Land is drying out. Water sources are dwindling.   In Africa, Lake Chad sits on the edge of the Sahara Desert. Millions of people in Chad, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Niger relied on the lake—once one of the largest in Africa—for drinking water, fishing, and farming. But there is hardly any lake left. Since 1963, Lake Chad has lost nearly 90 percent of its water. It has shrunk because higher temperatures made the water evaporate at a faster pace. (Overuse is another reason. After all, the lake provided food and water for so many.)   So how do climate scientists explain this global warming? It all starts with greenhouse gases in our atmosphere.

This series is great nonfiction for elementary kids, but entertaining enough that I love to read them along with my kids. The climate change book is excellent and as usual with this series, I actually learned a lot, myself!

These books are great as they are a quick, easy & fun read for young children to get an overview of big topics throughout history.
