Review

"Runner-up for the 2013 PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay, PEN American Center""In this collection of essays (most of which previously appeared in The New Yorker), Lepore illuminates the various ways in which the story of our nation has been formulated as a narrative. From John Smith's largely fictionalized account of the founding of Jamestown, in 1607, to Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration address, these pieces comprise an examination of the nature of history and an exploration of how the way we tell our story has shaped the story itself." (NewYorker.com's Page-Turner blog)"The Story of America, like A is for American, serves up a delightful smorgasbord of synecdoches and allegories of the evolution of American democracy. . . . [A] deeply satisfying book."---Amanda Foreman, Times Literary Supplement"Anyone who has not yet had the pleasure of reading Jill Lepore might begin with The Story of America: Essays on Origins. Ms. Lepore is a gifted historian and a contributor to the New Yorker, where most of these essays appeared. Her subjects range from John Smith and the founding of Jamestown to the murder of a Connecticut family in 2007 by a pair of drug-addled drifters. She drops in on, among others, Andrew Jackson, Noah Webster, Edgar Allen Poe and Charlie Chan (the real one). Her voice is always fresh, her prose engaging and her insights original."---Fergus M. Bordewich, Wall Street Journal"Ranging from colonial times to the present, the essays are liberally sprinkled with fascinating facts--etymologies of 'ballot' and 'booze,' or that Davy Crockett was the first presidential candidate to write a campaign autobiography. Even the footnotes contain buried treasures; history buffs and general readers alike will savor this collection." (Publishers Weekly)"She trains the literary equivalent of wide-angle and zoom lenses on seminal American documents, examining their subjects and their creators. . . . [E]legant."---Julia M. Klein, Los Angeles Times Book Review"Lepore, who teaches history at Harvard and writes for The New Yorker, brings to the task a keen eye for the often-competing claims of history, politics, and literature. . . . [T]errifically readable, intellectually engaging, and thoroughly entertaining. . . . Lepore's subjects mostly range from the 17th to the 19th centuries, but the essays feel remarkably relevant, grappling with ideas about race, equality, voting rights, taxes, poverty, the role of America in the world."---Kate Tuttle, Boston Globe"In this collection of her essays from the magazine, she paints portraits of George Washington, Thomas Paine, Longfellow, and many forgotten figures in America's founding, rescuing them from dogmatic myth to show that they are as human and as able to surprise as your best friend is able to inspire and infuriate you. . . . Lepore knocks you out of your comfort zone. You thought you knew America?" (The Daily Beast)"Tackling a wide variety of subjects--e.g., the Founding Fathers, Charles Dickens, Clarence Darrow, Charlie Chan, voting regulations, the decline of inaugural speeches--the author proves to be a funny, slightly punky literary critic, reading between the lines of American history. . . . As smart, lively, and assured as modern debunker gets." (Kirkus Reviews)"If the definition of a good book is one that makes a reader think, then Lepore has written a good book. If the definition of a very good book is one that makes a reader question prevailing thought, then Lepore has written a very good book indeed. . . . The stories behind stories are more revelatory than the so-called facts they are ostensibly built upon. And while to have read the U.S. Constitution is one thing, to understand what it says is an altogether different matter, since its meaning seems to shift with the times and the reader's intent. This book ought to be intentional reading for every American history wonk." (Booklist)

From the Back Cover

"As both a Jeremiah and a troubadour, Jill Lepore has one of the most distinctive voices in American literary life. So skilled in the art of the essay, she has a sense of narrative that is breathtaking. She tells resounding, surprising stories about real people forging American roots and development, but always through a deeply documented history. Both subtly and explosively, Lepore brings the power of history right into your lap and makes you shudder at just how deeply tangled past and present really are."--David W. Blight, author of American Oracle: The Civil War in the Civil Rights Era"Jill Lepore is one of America's most interesting scholars--a distinguished historian and a brilliant essayist. This prolific collection of articles and essays is a remarkable body of work that moves from early America to our present, contentious age."--Alan Brinkley, author of The Publisher: Henry Luce and His American Century"Jill Lepore is one of our finest historians of the battle over the story called 'America,' which, as she says, is constantly being fought over and over. In this stunning collection of essays, Lepore makes the case that the rise of democracy is bound up with the history of its reading and writing. That history is conflicted, ragged, and contradictory but, in Lepore's capable hands, as gripping and compelling as a novel."--Cathy N. Davidson, Duke University"Concise, clear, vivid, witty, insightful, and rich in turns of phrase. More than any other historian I know, Lepore cares about good writing and has a talent for making sophisticated ideas accessible to a broad readership."--Alan Taylor, author of The Civil War of 1812: American Citizens, British Subjects, Irish Rebels, and Indian Allies"Jill Lepore's storytelling power is on full display here. As much literary exercises as historical inquiries, these essays are compact, highly readable, and often written from an unexpected angle. Combining a lightness of touch with the authority of a historian who knows her field inside out, Lepore moves effortlessly through the length of American history."--Wai Chee Dimock, Yale University

Educational as well as entertaining, Jill Lepore's collection of essays covers topics from Captain John Smith to Charlie Chan and beyond with stories that attempt to get at the truth of these historical characters. In her efforts to separate the man from the myth, she often has to delve into the questions of how history is written and how accurate it is and can we ever really know the man, e.g., George Washington who is still an enigma. In these pages you will learn how Ben Franklin has been misunderstood all this time, how mystery still surrounds the life and death of Tom Paine, how Noah Webster slaved for decades over a dictionary that nobody wanted, how Longfellow's "Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" had a connection to the slavery issue, and much, much more. This book is a wonderful antidote to that cloying, tasteless, patriotic, flag-waving pap they call American history most of us were fed in K-12.

This is a really great book, and I read a lot that Jill Lepore writes. This is a second copy I bought in order to give it as a gift to a family member. I expect it will be very much enjoyed. In these days of transition to Trump, I expect she is taking copious notes and I expect something of contemporaneous history to join her numerous writings, since we are certainly in the midst of "The Story of America".

This is a marvelous, scholarly and completely accessible tour of American history, perceived via assorted documents, ideas and personalities. Topics, to name a few, include debtors prisons, Noah Webster, Inaugural speeches, biographies of George Washington and Charles Dickens' 1843 visit to America, The chapters are written with charm, authority and brio. The extensive endnotes are an added bonus, and every page of the book is fun to read.

I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my high school granddaughter. She's a history buff. She has already read most of this book in the few days since she received it, and she tells me that she loves it. What caught my attention when selecting this book was the fact that it's a series of essays. So if you are the type of reader who doesn't want to get bogged down in a history book with long chapters and tons of footnotes, this may be a book for you.

This is a well-written, very well documented series of essays on a wide variety of topics. Lepore makes history interesting, and she is often scintillating. At times, however, she can overwhelm her reader with detail, some of which may not be of interest. The most admirable and enjoyable aspect of her book is her storytelling. She focuses on telling interesting stories about figures as different as Andrew Jackson, Edgar Allen Poe, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Theodore Roosevelt and she largely succeeds.

What a delight to read! The book is worth every penny I paid. In fact, after buying the Kindle edition, I purchased a second, hard copy as a gift for a friend. I am an admirer of Lepore's scholarship and writing anyway--found her book on King Philip's War enormously useful as a teacher and scholar. These essays are less academic. They're quicker and lighter but have just enough historical heft to leave a thinking reader with something to muse on.

Lepore's book was delightful, and after reading it in my Kindle I bought a hard copy to give my teen-age granddaughter because it is not like the boring surveys of American history one gets in high school. It is a set of interesting stories that might get her into the larger subject. Some pieces are a bit wandering, but they usually made me want to read more on that period or incident.

A joy to read. Politics and history, she tells us, work the same side of the street. “Using the past to make an argument about the future is a feature of political rhetoric....” Moreover history is a story, or many stories, the narrative knitting of past to present to future. History can be known many ways -- America did this or Virginia did that; 53% of Americans voted for X. Equally, and more interestingly, we can know history by looking at cases -- as Lepore does. What fun to read about Benjamin Franklin in his many authorial aliases talking to himself, or learning the origins of Charlie Chan (yes, she has a chapter on the real Hawaiian detective who inspired the character).Adding to the treat, she writes beautiful long sentences, even though her editor might have taken her to task for a few of them. Her proof reader, similarly, might have stepped up in a few places (Monroe’s inaugural of 1807?) but, dear reader, take these little lapses as a treasure hunt.

Scott Cunningham was one of Wicca’s finest practitioners I’ve ever had the honor to meet. His devotion, dedication, and determination for providing tested, tried, and true methods of Wiccan Spirituality continue to inspire new generations. A Guide For The Solitary Practioner is top shelf quality. It seemed Scott’s life purpose was to inform and help everyone wanting to learn the true path of Wicca. I am 7th generation. Also, I encourage the use of Scott’s books to my students and coven family. It was Scott’s dream for his writings, and teachings to be considered an American Tradition. We are in reality his students, friends, practitioners solitary or covens continuing his standards for the American Traditions. His love of nature, his love and compassion for his close friends, his partner, and his family are inspirational. His knowledge has become a part of our Traditions.Scott Cunningham, there is a Brighter Star in the midnight’s morning sky and we know you are there. Thank you for giving us these books of wisdom. We share the American Traditions beginning from you. Merry meet and merry part, we give our blessings from the heart. )O(

Firstly, I am completely new to Wicca. This book was actually recommended to me by several people who practice Wicca since I live in a rural area and really have to learn this religion by myself. So far, I have only read the first few sections but find myself engulfed already and in love!I can not speak for the authenticity of the writing, because I am so new, there is no way for me to know if this book is a good place to start. But from reading other reviews and listening to those who recommended it to me, I am confident this was a good purchase.I can however at least speak on the condition of the book I received. It arrived very quickly and in wonderful condition (pictures included in my review). The print is great and the book is definitely brand new. I was very happy this book included the author's own personal Book of Shadows. From what I understand, you should make your own Book of Shadows to fit your own needs/beliefs, but it is really helpful to have an example to get an idea of how you will want yours to be.I can not wait to continue reading this book. I most likely will update my review after I finish to add more details if I feel it necessary.

This book was recommended to me by a friend, then it kept popping up all around me. I think it's very important simply cause there is a strong emphasis on being a part of a coven in most other books. I still don't feel safe coming out into the real world and feel like people would laugh at me for calling myself a Witch. I'm grateful for this book, it makes me feel safe.

This book's first chapter explains Wicca better than anything I have ever read. It would be a great gift for someone who didn't understand what Wicca truly was, or as just a gift to those interested! This book is very "readable", I didn't have any trouble with boring parts. I bought it used, but it looks and reads fine. This would not be what you're looking for if you want a "magic" or "spell" book. This book isn't for Hogwarts, it's for the nature friendly free spirits who want to understand and relate to the wiccan way of life.

Scott Cunningham is a genius when it comes to writing and explaining Wicca. He writes in an easy to read manner and makes complicated ideas clear. He starts by explaining Wicca's background and brings us into what Wicca is today and how we fit in as solitary practitioners. He takes us through all the important aspects of Wicca, emphasizing the main laws and introducing us to guidelines for proper conduct of a Witch. This book includes careful instruction regarding the creating of energy; magic and spells; rituals; making the circle; drawing the quarters and invoking the God and Goddess. It has many spells and rituals laid out with step by step instructions and beautiful prayers which you can use in your own rituals. This is a book that I keep in my library and refer to often. If you are a solitary Wiccan, or just interested, then this is a must have book.

My husband and I let my mother-in-law burrow ours years ago so she could help her mother understand us better. Well she threw it out.... but now I have it again. I love this book and had a hard time letting it go. If you 're looking for a start up Wicca book then this is for you

I’m loving this book so much I also bought a kindle version so I could continue reading and use as a reference when on the go. I was always interested in wicca but it seemed unattainable, unapproachable. I stumbled upon this book and the description spoke to me. I’m grateful for the “inside look” as that’s what sold me on the purchase. Great insight, beautifully simplistic & thoroughly engaging. It will inspire you to become a better, earth loving person :)

Anyone looking to step into the craft should look no further than this book. Cunningham has such a wonderful voice! He guides the reader but refrains from judgement or narrow rules. It's a great beginner's guide and will leave you wanting more. After you read this you need to get his other publications. Cunningham lays out the foundation and inspires. This book includes a book of shadows, some herb listing, and all the basics of modern Wicca. It's a classic. I've become a huge fan, and this book was the start. May he rest in peace.

For him, one more chance to try and keep them together. They really do make great friends, but the massive old mansion holds many dark secrets, as well as some unwelcome wild life, bats and ghosts.Always awkward when you can see the ghosts, some of your friends and family can see them, and your beau cannot.Lethally dangerous in some instances too.For the ghosts, as well as Ben and Peyton, to move on, some of the darkness needs to be resolved, and old wounds healed.Lots of things that go bump in the night, changes to relationships, and relationships that reveal some dark intentions. My honest opinion? Awesome KU read!I read this book on Kindle Unlimited, and also received a free advance copy.

This is the 4th book I've read written Alexandria Clarke; she has done a great job at writing a good book; I will definitely be reading more of her books. The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.I loved the characters.I received a free copy of this book via booksprout and I’m voluntarily leaving a review.

I don't normally write reviews, but just had to for this book. I thought the beginning dragged, but then I got dragged in and couldn't stop reading. Each chapter ended with a cliffhanger and I had to read just one more! There were twists and turns all through the the story. I thought I had it figured out and it twisted and I was wrong. I'll be looking for another book by this author!!

I loved this book about a couple going through a divorce and the struggle they go through in order to finalize everything. I loved that this story is suspenseful and creepy but also a little sad because it involves kids. This writer has a way with words that trap you and make you loose track of time. I love this writer's stories because even though they are fiction they seem like they could actually happen someday. Read this book you will not be disappointed. I look forward to reading more from this writer.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Fantastic story. For me, it's a must that a book grabs me from the start and doesn't let go. This book definitely fits the bill. Not only the story line, but the characters too. And the way they interact, not only with each other, but with the ghosts too. Very well written, keeps you guessing all the way through. Had a heck of a time putting down to get anything else done.

In the middle of a divorce she receives an inheritance from her grandfather. There is however certain conditions attached! An excellent story line filled with twists and red herringsI received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I absolutely love ghost stories. This is one of the best that I have read. Love the characters and how they were written. The plot was amazing and a twist you wont see coming. Really enjoyed this read. Give it a try, you wont be disappointed.

I really enjoyed The Haunting of Abram Mansion. The story hooked me from the beginning, and kept me reading with anticipation till the end. The characters were well written, very believable. Although I had an idea of how it might end, which character was the true villain, came as a surprise. Other than it kept me reading far to late into the night, I truly enjoyed it! Hope to read more of this author's work.

My 9 year old grandson LOVES these books! He read all of the Disry of a wimpy kid books and that author recommended these! Good call!

The best book it is awesome so funny and hilarious. You should buy it the writing is hood has a lot of funny parts in the pictures so if you don't have it you should buy it!!

This is a good book. I like the way that both Nate and Gina get what they got. They each got something good- Nate got a good grade on the Benjamin Franklin 'thing' and Gina got the spoffy. And it all evens out in the end. You wish to know the highlights? All right, I shall name them. One, Nate wakes up from a nightmare (or is it a different book?). So then he goes to school when he finds out they are doing a research project on a great American. So then he at first got paired up with Megan. But she was getting her tonsils removed that day. So then he got paired up with Gina, one of the people Nate hates (along with Mrs. Godfrey. And Arthur.). So then it turns out they are going Benjamin Franklin. Then Nate goes home and then tomorrow he finds out he is a fleeceball captain (indoor baseball). So Nate gets really pumped up. So then he decides to name his team the Pysho Dogs. He likes that name! He tells the guys about it and they like the idea too. But then he forgot to give the name to their coach and Gina ends up giving the name Kuddle Kittins. Pathetic, right? That makes no team hard to the bone. Then the guys find out about it. They are not happy. So then Nate plans to give Gina a 'treat': he was going to dump egg salad on her head but it backfires. He does it on Jenny instead. FYI, Jenny is Nate's love magnet ( not really: she was going out with Arthur.). So then it gets all bad. What happens next? Will Nate have a good ending, or not? Find out! I'm Stephanie Cotton, by the way. I live in Willistion, Vermont. Nice to see all your reviews! They are really nice. Well, happy reading, all you Big Nate fans out There! Have the best time ever reading this book!

This book is great. If you like Diary of a Wimpy Kid this is a good book for you. It has a main idea and is very funny. The only reason I gave it four stars is because I thought it was too short.🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃😎

My son loves this series

My 9 year old son loves these books!

My son loves these books! I'd say they're approx a 1st/2nd grade reading level.

Calvinism gets a bad wrap these days. Maybe rightly so. The "Young, Restless, Reformed" crowd discovered the beauty of Calvinism through the preaching of the Bible and with that knowledge came a lot of pride and a lot of contempt for those who didn't see these glorious truths themselves. Hence the category of "cage stage Calvinist."Jeff Medders powerfully helpful book Humble Calvinism attempts to let the air out of the pride tank and fill it with beautiful, Christ-exalting humility. This is the very thing that a true embrace of the Doctrines of Grace should produce. By showing the humbling, and heart-warming, realities of TULIP in all of Scripture and calling Christians to that same kind of humble charity, we find what true Calvinism is supposed to be, which is really who Jesus has made us to be!

I loved reading this book! There was so much in this quick read, and Jeff did a great job unpacking all of it. I went into it with very little knowledge of Calvinism; only enough to THINK I could never get on board with the areas Jeff acknowledges can be stumbling blocks. He explained everything, not just from a scriptural basis, but with a voice that reflects the depths of his own relationship with the Father. It cleared the fog of ignorance and helped me surpass a particular plateau in my own faith. I feel as if I have a new insight as I read the word now, which only helps to find new nooks and crevices where Christ is embedded in scripture. Great job Jeff!

When I started reading “Humble Calvinism”, I thought I would end up saying, “This is the book I needed to read a few years ago.” It didn’t take long for it to shine a light in some still dark places in my heart and mind where I haven’t always handled the doctrines of grace graciously. If there is a stereotype that shouldn’t exist, it’s that of the angry Calvinist. J.A. Medders does a wonderful job of explaining from scripture why a heart that has been changed by this radical act of grace from God has no business not displaying the fruit of that grace. Knowing about T.U.L.I.P. does not give us any prideful ground to stand on. As Mr. Medders puts it, “Knowing unconditional election doesn’t puff up our chests—it takes the breath out of them.” This book is helpful for those who are new to the faith, seasoned Reformed vets, and even for those that have been hurt by poor displays of Calvinism.

I loved this book! I am not one to dig into Theology, so I didn't really know what to expect. This book is a great intro to Calvinism! After reading this book you will have a solid understanding of what Calvinism is, but most importantly you will know how to act as a Christian. Jeff writes in a way that connects with the reader. I am going to go a grab his other books now!

No matter where you are in your Christian walk, no matter your views on theology, this book will bless your relationship with our Triune God. Humble Calvinism will make you laugh one minute, convict you the next, and put you more and more in awe of God’s grace for us. We are in complete need of a perfect savior, and this book will help you see that more with each page.

“… and if I know the 5 points and have not love …” notes author and pastor Jeff Medders on the cover of Humble Calvinism.Medders wants to have a conversation with every self-identifying Calvinist, starting with himself. Beginning with a make-believe story about Calvinists thinking they are the only ones in heaven (;-), the author wants to gently yet firmly remind all who enjoy the title that “Humble Calvinism” is not an oxymoron. Even before a few turns on this journey, the “short interlude about jargon and history” is a helpful primer covering the last 500 years, including the five “alones” (solas) and where the TULIP comes from in short form. This is a brief book, dense enough to be worth your while, marking out important matters for readers who find those matters weighty enough to think on and talk about. With the tool of storytelling at the ready, Medders patiently and persistently calls Calvinists to appropriate means of humility (grace is for dinner—and dessert; brunch, too), that we represent Christ and His good news in a way worthy of Him, the originally “humble and happy” calvinist. As I help lead a local church as an under-shepherd, a culture-shaping theology book like this is quite helpful. When people swing by and ask (or email), “Is your church _____?” (Charismatic? Reformed? Have biblical membership? Baptist or Presbyterian? Have women leaders? Agree with me on the End Times?) I usually have one question (and an observation): “What do you mean by this church being ‘_______’?” (And, it’s not “my” church at all.) Misrepresentation and “tribalism” abounds, and we need conversations that are better than quick litmus tests. Problems multiply in these situations, from reducing the whole system to five mere points to debate theology, to misconstruing being “right” and “speaking the truth,” yet lacking love, not embodying the One who is “full of grace and truth.” To the middle-aged man who perks up anytime I quote a Puritan in a sermon, to the work-at-home Mom who tunes out all hints of supposed theological controversy, the stereotypes are partly true because they are real. By refusing to point out the flaws of all those “other” people out there who hold different views — aka the trap of the “cage-stage” Calvinist — and mostly focus on the shortcomings and lack of substance in his own group of thinker, Medders leads us to the city whose maker is God, not man. Let all TULIP-lovers be humbled by the goodness and greatness of the One who first loved us and gave Himself for us — and for so many others!I have been reticent to claim the name “Calvinist.” Books like Medders’ here, and the groups and networks he helps shape, are at the forefront of realizing that “Glorious theology, conveyed through an immature personality, ends up seeming inglorious and even distasteful” (Ray Ortlund, Jr. in Foreword). I cannot watch their lives up close, but the interactions that drip with grace and graciousness tell a story. This book is helpful, for it will break some of your categories by mainly shining a bright light on blind spots. He (and she) who has eyes to see, let them see. Jeff Medders quotes extensively from Jesus and His apostles and urges us along with Paul to live “with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4 v 2-3).For these reasons and others I will be adding this volume to our church library and the short list of books — alongside PROOF by Daniel Montgomery and Timothy Paul Jones — for those who are curious about Reformed theology, or are quite hyper about Calvinism. Both books lead away from so many of the pitfalls of calvinists to make Jesus look as beautiful and compelling as He is.A couple quotes from fellow humble Calvinists:“Calvinism is exciting. As a way of gaining new insights into the Bible, as a God-centered way of seeing all of reality, Calvinism is exciting…. “Reformed” theology has made a big comeback. It’s a good time to be a Calvinist. The sad part is, we corrupt everything we touch. That too is a teaching of Calvinism, and we sure are proving it. …A humble Arminian can be a good Christian. But a proud Calvinist cannot be a good Christian or a good Calvinist. One of the clearest messages from one end of the Bible to the other is summed up like this: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (James 4 v 6). Any theology that is technically accurate but personally self-exalting does harm not only to people but also to that very theology.—Ray Ortlund, Jr. in Foreword“Of all people who engage in controversy, we, who are called Calvinists, are most expressly bound by our own principles to the exercise of gentleness and moderation.”—John Newton(I received an advance copy from the publisher/author for review, and give this honest review freely; and then happily pre-ordered this helpful book personally to share.)

Jeff has written a book that explains why God’s love and grace are something beyond our comprehension and power to obtain. This book made me grateful for who Jesus is and the good, grace-soaked message He embodies. This book explains an oft-argues theology with care and winsomeness, and persuades with the best of manners. Highly recommended.

Often, in reading Humble Calvinism, I would find myself laughing at something and then pull myself up with the alarming discovery Medders was talking about ME! Truly, we have met the “enemy” and it is us. I sincerely loved this book. It is worth reading and re-reading every day. It is that good. Medders helps put CHRIST back in Calvinism. Thank you.
