Great book, perfect for what I needed and yet offers more. I have a pretty extensive English vocabulary and have used vocabulary flash cards in the past. The problem is, it gets harder over time to find useful words. Some are just so long or obscure that I don't find it fruitful to try to memorize or use them. And the rest are already known to me. This book managed to introduce some useful words and also has useful etymological information which further elucidates the real meaning of the word by exploring the history of its origin.

I read a lot, but often the words I read get logged somewhere in the back of my mind so that I understand it (either from school or from the context clues through reading), recognize it when I see it again, but rarely could I use these in conversation. This handy little book is in a format that works well for learning some more advanced vocabulary through using the Latin roots.What I like about this book is that most of the words are words that are understood by most folks, but rarely enter into conversation. It is also handy for writing instead of always going with the Thesaurus. Practicing the words out loud is nice also. If you even look at the excerpt provided, you see the layout of the book and a good example of the kinds of words that you will learn.So why should you get this book? If you are studying for a standardized exam (such as SAT or GRE) then it's a handy reference. But if you are like me, you probably want to expand your vocabulary, though not in a way that makes you sound pretentious or overly verbose. Instead they are words that one might want to be familiar with in everyday speech but words that are not the most common. It is also especially nice if you are familiar with these words but want to get a firm grasp on their proper use.I highly recommend this version due to the amazing format and sheer volume of actual usable words. Take that Dictionary.com word of the day e-mail! (of which 90% of the time are words I will never use) The other nice aid would be a set of GRE or SAT vocabulary flash cards. Though those focus on the most common GRE or SAT words and not necessarily on words one might really want to insert into everyday conversation.

This resource is wonderful for those who want to begin their understanding of word structure, word families, and some historical context for word origins. However, for word aficionados of any post-intermediate level, the work was a bit elementary and trite, without extensive development or explanations. Good for late high school or early college use by those wanting to improve basics word development skills. It was a good reminder for things you might have forgotten. My biggest disappointment in the Kindle version was the end of chapter quizzes that were not efficiently or interactively active-linked to the answers or provided immediate scoring, making this learning-assessment tool cumbersome and taking the worst of both printed and electronic reading options into an nearly unusable resource. With a little development, this might have made the book more engaging and interactive. Oh well!

5 stars for the book and 1 for the print. I ordered this vocabulary builder after reading a library copy. The content is great, the print however, is very low quality. It was printed in May 2017 in the US and many pages, mostly in the end, have imprinted text from following pages. The text is still readable but the appearance is irksome.

What I love most about this book is that most of the words I'm already familiar with when I see them in writing, but I never use them in my own speech and writing. This books helps me understand those words better, especially since every five or so words are grouped under their Latin or Greek origins.The only thing that disappointed me about the book was that the pages are extremely thin and flimsy. I would equate it to a low-quality newspaper. Figured I could use this as a reference for years to come, but seems unlikely. But this might be on par for the course with most mass market paper books, so wouldn't subtract a star for it.

This book is a fun little coffee table book. You can use it to learn from, or you can open it up a day at a time and learn a new word when you're relaxing on the couch.It introduces new words, breaks them down by their constituent parts, identifies related words, and then provides the definitions and how the definitions evolved. Very enjoyable. I'm glad I bought it.

This book has been helping me since I been in school to assist with expanding my vocabulary skills. This book has helped with proficient vocabulary skills within my writing course. Effective writing with the proficiency of utilizing proper vocabulary has been exciting for me. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking to expand their vocabulary.

Mark Sobell's "A Practical Guide to Linux Commands, Editors, and Shell Programming, Second Edition" follows a number of other "Practical Guides" that Sobell has authored on different flavors of Unix and Linux. Its title is quite descriptive, as it does not contain any material on GUIs, networking, printing, and so on.The Good: this is basically two books for the price of one. The 300-page reference section toward the end of the book is very good: it contains tables of command arguments in a visually pleasing layout, specific notes, and on top of that it also includes exactly what the man pages sorely lack: detailed examples! Thus, the command reference in Part V alone is worth buying the book for. Sobell covers 100 utilities, ranging from one-page pointers (e.g. cal, renice, strings, wc) to mini-tutorials (e.g. find, grep, make, pax, sort). The early part of the book is 600 pages long and is intended to be both a tutorial and a reference. Sobell is explicitly trying to be novice-friendly: he has included chapter summaries, exercises (with answers to even-numbered exercises provided on his website), a glossary in an appendix, as well as numerous tables summarizing lessons learned (or about to be introduced). Such tables are scattered throughout the text and in the case of a few chapters (notably the ones on vim and emacs) they are also repeated in the form of very useful chapter summaries. Sobell is very good both at cross-referencing material and at collecting all the relevant information in one place. The first 5 chapters deal with the basics of interactive shell usage and are pedagogically sound, probably more so than the chapters that follow. After that, the author covers two different text editors and two different shells. Though Sobell doesn't seem to favor vim over emacs (or vice versa), in the case of shell programming he is unambiguous: "Do not use tcsh as a programming language ... If you are going to learn only one shell programming language, learn bash." (p. 350). On a different note, Sobell also includes various asides which are perhaps not necessary but are fun to read about, e.g. on the tee or the pstree utilities.The Bad: this book tries to be two things at the same time, tutorial and reference, and succeeds more in the latter than in the former. This is unfortunate: this volume is too elementary for advanced Linux users, yet it may be too difficult for those with limited experience. A few examples of suboptimal pedagogy: a) Sobell seems to have a mix-and-match approach to writing new books, e.g. in chapter 4 the use of fstab and mount comes out of nowhere and is never really explained -- though it is explained in chapter 12 of Sobell's book on Ubuntu. b) Chapter 6 is nominally about the vim text editor, but in reality it's lacking pretty basic stuff (e.g. gg). Sobell seems to be more interested in old-school vi, ignoring vim capabilities like folding, keyword completion, and (most importantly) vim's visual mode. c) The organization of the material is not always sound: e.g. to understand the introduction to bash in chapter 8 one has to read portions of chapter 10 on bash programming. Unfortunately, the same also holds for the first half of chapter 10 itself, in which Sobell repeatedly uses concepts that are introduced in the second half. d) When the author introduces a new tool from scratch (see chapters 12, 13, and 14 on awk, sed, and rsync, respectively) the results are underwhelming: pages upon pages of tables and definitions with all examples postponed until later. e) Even though the book contains a number of errata, as of this writing none of them have been corrected on the author's website. Some of these are potentially grave: for example, on p. 305 Sobell describes (()) by saying that it expands an arithmetic expression, but then on p. 461 he includes a tip box highlighting the distinction between arithmetic expansion, $(()), and arithmetic evaluation, (()). What's even worse, using this book as a reference is also somewhat complicated: since it's purportedly aimed at beginners it is far from complete (e.g. Sobell has nothing to say about the printf builtin), but that doesn't change the fact that one still has to lug around a 1000-page volume.In a nutshell, this an OK introduction to interactive shell usage, but not to shell programming. O' Reilly's tutorial volumes "Learning the bash shell" and "Classic shell scripting" (both of which can be read linearly) are much better when it comes to programming. Even so, the meticulous cross-referencing and the abundance of tables make Sobell's book a decent reference. All in all, 3.5 stars.Alex Gezerlis

Excellent book that will take your linux skills to the next level. Command line is where Linux shines and if you need to know what's under the hood, read this book, either cover to cover or just by chapters that interest you.You'll hear many Linux enthusiasts gladly pointing to free online resources for learning Linux and although there are many, those resources are of varying quality and always fail to go into a deeper discussion accompanied by examples, end up pawing man pages or worse are just echo of somebody else's attempt at writing a Linux walkthrough.This book is primarily practical. Although the opening chapter may seem unnecessary, dealing with history of GNU and Linux, chapters that follow dive deeper and deeper to show you just what is it that makes Linux shell so great.The language in which this book is written makes it an authoritative source. If you ever caught yourself reading the man pages of any Linux utility, you noticed how incredibly terse and hard to understand the language of the man pages can be. The language of this book is just a notch down from the man pages language, it isn't hard on you but it will require your attention all the time as there's very little to none "filler material" and unnecessary repetition.This is not to say that this material is dry and unreadable. The material is not only compiled information on utilities and their roles but author also shows his points in practice and makes you learn not only on how- to's but by contrast as well. I caught myself reading 30 pages at once when I noticed this book on the shelves of the bookstore, just by browsing through the pages.Educative- if you set out to learn as many available commands with their most commonly used handles, the appendices of this book will greatly help you achieve just that since those appendices contain an impressive compilation of commands, their handles and (what most impressed me) what those handles do through examples. No other book or online guide that I've seen so far does that for its reader. Commands discussed aren't only the most popular ones, or the recommended ones for different levels, inside are explanations for commands that are used by more advanced users but explained on a very plain level and through non- trivial examples. That is way past the "hello world" level of online guides.Although you'll probably be mostly interested in the Bash shell part, author discusses other available shells with the more advanced audience in mind (like tcsh and zsh) keeping the same level and depth of discussion, and where necessary, points out how things are done or which equivalent utilities are used in those shells as well as in Bash.What isn't covered here is Linux networking. Everything that is explained pertains to working at an individual Linux workstation. It is assumed that you have an access to a completely configured and successful Linux installation that has all hardware and installation issues resolved. In this day and age, you'd probably want to do a virtual installation of Linux in a virtual machine thereby eliminating possible conflict due to non- compliant hardware.This book helped me a lot while preparing for the Linux Professional Institute Certification level 1, especially for the first of the two exams (LPIC 101) that required exact knowledge of commands and their usage on individual workstations. I successfully passed that exam and those appendices with commands as well as explanations provided throughout the book proved invaluable at exam time.

I'm fairly computer-literate, but have no formal training in Linux. I've picked-up some Linux knowledge (mostly by bothering other employees for help), but had big gaps and never felt comfortable working in the environment. After reading this book, the gaps were filled and, while I'm not an expert, I'm much more comfortable working in with Linux.This book really does have it all. The chapters are well written for newcomers to learn the concepts and commands, plus it has an extensive reference section that puts the "man" pages to shame. The examples are very good, and the cross-references are excellent.I actually bought this book in both print and Kindle formats. The book stays on my desk, while the Kindle travels with me. This is one of the best-formatted Kindle editions of a technical book I have seen to date. The cross-references actually work (and are more critical in the Kindle version than the print). My only complaint with the Kindle version is that some of the examples are a little hard to read as "pictures" on my Kindle 2. Still, some effort has been made to format them (unlike some other books).The bottom line is that if you need work with Linux, this is the book to buy.

I've never used photo editing software before, but found that this book was easy to follow and clearly explained terminology, editing concepts and program features.

I’ve been a photographer for very many years and studied at Uni when we actually went into the darkroom and got our hands dirty. Moving to digital photography I eventually learned to use post shooting software and flipped back and forth between Lightroom and Apple’s Aperture. I settled on Lightroom but still struggled with many concepts and it was only when I stumbled across Victoria’s book on Lightroom (The original ‘Classic’ version) that everything became clear and I started to enjoy what I was doing began to learn again.With the advent of CC and the mobile version, I bought Vicoria’s Latest book and again this brought everything into focus (pun fully intended!). She explains the how, and more importantly, the why of all the controls, how the whole cloud infrastructure works and the benefits and downsides of the various versions.That the book is available as both a hard copy (which lives next to my desktop computer for constant reference) and as a regularly updated download, it really is indispensable.There are other, very good, tutors, but Victoria’s style makes everything simple and understandable.I really recommend the book. It’s made my photography and the post shoot developing enjoyable again.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC - Edit Like a Pro is aimed at new users of Lightroom CC, but is also very useful to those of us who use Adobe Lightroom Classic. Starting about 1/3 of the way into the book, Victoria Bampton, the "Lightroom Queen", begins analyzing ordinary images and showing how tweaks can turn them into much stronger images. It's a great way to further your study of how to make your images better. The edits suggested in the book for sample images have shown me that more edits are possible for my own images, to make them much stronger. Mastering photography is a lifetime pursuit, at least for me, and learning new ways to look at images, see features in the images that make them weaker, and the Lightroom possibilities to strengthen my own images is the essence of good photography. We never stop learning.

This is the first book I have found that adequately explains the non “classic” version of Lightroom CC. So many books out there might gloss over this version and then move to the classic version. I am just getting back into photograph as a hobby, and have very outdated knowledge of photoshop (back when I started we did everything in the actual darkroom). So knowing only enough to be dangerous, all other guides were confusing. I have the classic version installed on a desktop computer at home, but due to a lot of travel a good majority of my editing is in the cc version on my laptop. And between the 2 versions and my limited knowledge, I was just floundering. Victoria has very nicely laid things out in a very easy to follow manner. And on her website is more information including printable “translation” sheets for the tools in the different versions. I highly recommend this boom for anyone who really wants to know this version of the software, and not just be told why they should switch to the classic version.

I purchased Victoria’s previous book “Adobe Lightroom Classic CC FAQ”, and found it to be a valuable, well written and informative reference book. It sits next to my computer and I have the ebook copy on my tablet. When she offered a similar book for cloud based “Adobe Lightroom CC” that also included suggestions to improve and optimize my post processing I jumped on it with both feet. I am very pleased with my purchase. I strongly recommend this book for anyone seeking to improve the quality of their photographs. I normally shoot with my DSLR but now I am also using LR CC on my iPad to supplement my digital photography experience.

But this is the best one, by far. Concise yet hitting all the key areas. Well written and organized. It has a "Fast Track" that points you to different portions of the book to address key aspects of the program to get started. I really liked that. In addition, she is really easy and pleasant to deal with over the internet, and provides updates that keep track with the program. What more can you ask for? This is now my go-to book for Lightroom.

I think it's worth an ALERT: this is a case book and let me be clear, there is only an array of cases (facts, financial statements, description of situation), no studies.Hence it's a waste of time if you are trying to self-study. There is nothing to learn in this book, unless you are in the author's class that uses this book as the teaching material. To make up for that learning experience, you need the group discussion and the teaching, which is only available in the classroom. The book facts are 5% of the value of the course.The correct name of the book should be : case materials for HBS corporate structuring course, no studies included.100% Avoid if you are buying for self study.Again, I don't care if this book is meant to be used in the classroom and "therefore the author cannot reveal the solutions". As customers, I feel cheated and as seller and writer, it should be their responsibilities to make it clear what the book is and is not. I bought this and shipped it to Asia paying 50 bucks of shipping fee and I think it's fair to say I'm cheated.

This book is exceptional. It starts with providing the reader with the basics of distressed situations: the parties involved in restructuring, academic research regarding investment returns, the bankruptcy process, etc.The remainder of the book in primarily composed of case studies grouped into three categories (1) liability restructuring, (2) asset/equity restructuring, and (3) restructuring employee's claims. The cases are exceptionally well written.Many reviewers complain that the book would be better with a supplement that discusses "solutions" to the cases. I agree, those would be nice to have. However, the author uses his book to conduct his Harvard MBA course on restructuring. The value of the cases would obviously be compromised if answers were released. Maybe he will do so when he retires.For those interested in restructuring, the following is a list of my favorite books organized by subject area.Bankruptcy process:1. The Executive Guide to Corporate Bankruptcy - Legal text with comprehensive coverage on the bankruptcy processStrategies of distressed investors:1. The Art of Distressed M&A - Good book for strategic buyers who want to purchase the company or a business unit prior to bankruptcy or through a section 363 transaction during bankruptcy2. Distressed Debt Analysis - Good book for hedge fund managers who are looking to purchase distressed debt usually to extract short-term profits. Structural arbitrage is only briefly discussed.Turnaround Management:1. Corporate Recovery - Discusses how to turnaround companies nearing, but not in, bankruptcy2. Corporate Turnaround - Discusses how to turnaround companies nearing, but not in, bankruptcyAccounting for Restructuring:Advanced Accounting by Hoyle, Schaefer, Doupnik - Excellent coverage of fresh start accounting and NOL preservation. Note that only one chapter in the book covers bankruptcy accounting but this will be the same for all advanced accounting texts.Note, Principles of Corporate Renewal and The Vulture Investors are supposed to good as well but I have not read them yet.

This is a TERRIFIC book, but it is a collection of terrific case studies and by that I mean the kind of case studies you would use in an MBA program. There are no conclusions drawn or analysis of the case or even questions to think about. There is also no follow up on the corporations included and how their plans were actually implemented or if they survived.However, the cases are divided up into three parts and each part has a short essay that introductes the general theme for the cases and offers a paragraph summary of each case. There is also a reding list of academic papers and books that can be used to delve deeper on that parts topic. This does add real value to this book.Just like in b-school, you are expected to dig, dig, dig. And this is a good thing. Don't get me wrong. You will learn more by asking yourself questions about what all the information means. And if you are an experienced case reader you will pretty much know what you should go after. And these cases have a extremely useful financials associated with them (analyzing these is where the real payoff is). You can do a lot of the follow up on your own by digging through Internet resources such as WSJ, Yahoo, and Hoovers, etc.Just don't expect any easy conclusions in the book because it is designed for use in class so all of the conclusions have to be held back or the cases become useless for teaching. However, since discussion of cases is the best place to get new insights above your own analysis, it would be GREAT if the publisher or the author put up a website where purchasers of this book could discuss the cases with each other.Maybe this would be the same problem as publishing analysis. However, my only frustration with this wonderful book is that even though I have gotten a great deal from it and will continue to benefit from it as a resource text for years to come, I KNOW I could get more out of it by discussing it with others. Each of these cases would be terrific for class use.The cases are all five star. I gave the book four stars only because of my personal frustrations in not being able to get other discussion about the cases and because of its very specialized topic. If you are interested in this topic and understand what cases are and are not - then for you this is a five star book.

About the Author

Sean McNamara spent his childhood overseas in and was exposed to a variety of spiritual traditions. Early incidents of illness and surgery brought on a persistent fear and contemplation of death and of what happens afterward. In his twenties, McNamara became a Buddhist practitioner, using meditation to investigate the nature of consciousness and reality. Because many traditions eventually become rigid and limiting out of a need for self-preservation, and do so at the cost of each individual's unique development, McNamara took a different path. He found lucid dreaming and the out-of-body experience to be especially potent methods for his spiritual inquiry, and free of the dogmatic qualities found elsewhere. He eventually applied his knowledge of meditation to telekinesis to illustrate the themes of interconnectedness and intention to his meditation students. He currently teaches meditation, lucid dreaming, the out-of-body experience, and telekinesis in Denver, Colorado, with the purpose of showing others that spiritual growth is still possible as an independent, self-empowering, and revelatory path. Very nice and rich in knowledge. The writer knows very well his field. If anyone falls onto the study and practice with this book seriously, will go beyond the scope of this book. ie the writer shown and demonstrates some different methods to go through the 5 levels in order for someone to accomplish the primary stages of telekinesis, because telekinesis does not stop here or any other manual to read. Telekinesis has various and many forms of manifesting through. Not only moving light objects, or enclosed in a glass container. But someone can even manage to walk on water or moving circumstances and events, even re generate the cells of his body, and many more. Its just enough for someone to search and find.

There have been plenty of times when I set up a piece of foil or paper on a needle and tried to move it. This book gave me confidence to try again and it addresses the issue of what to do while putting in the time with it when it isn't moving yet. It isn't every time, because it does take time to learn, but I do consistently get good movement and my foil is under glass. The confidence it gives me carries over to other things in my life which also seem difficult or impossible.

I've very satisfied with this book so far. I'm just messing around with Level 1 and trying to see if I can get a response, but I love the down to earth and rational path that Sean McNamara takes. It's much less about the "Why" and a lot more about the "How" when it comes to Psycho-Kinesis, which is a HUGE rarity when it comes to Alternative Views today. Most books are filled to the brim with shaky explanations on how it all works, and I can speak from experience as someone who follows a more spiritual path, with many of the authors trying to persuade or intimidate you into their way of thinking about the world.This is why I LOVE this book; plenty of exercises and training methods for the mind, which is what I wanted from a book like this. Though I've read the book cover to cover and written notes on the processes, I'm just now digging into the exercises. It's day one so I don't expect miracles, but Sean McNamara's no nonsense and honest way of writing has me feeling that he is very trustworthy, to say nothing of the fact that he has many You-tube videos demonstrating his abilities.As for the delivery, I was amazed. I had gotten the Standard Shipping and was expecting this book sometime around the 24th of June. To my surprise I got it just 3 days after ordering! I am very satisfied with my purchase and would implore anyone looking for a possible path into the Meta-Physical world, one which gives verifiable and measurable results I might add, to definitely pick up this book!TLDR; 5/5, My delivery was incredible and so is the contents of this training manual.

I have not read all of this book as yet, there are exercises to complete along the way,but it is both exciting and challenging to get involved in this activity and I look forward to great success in the future.

We will see after practicing for a while. As a skeptic I must hold some caution to diving into random subjects

I've just started reading it, but I couldn't help jumping ahead to check out the web links to the online tutorials. I could already do a basic psi-wheel, but now I'm excited to get more advanced. His guidance on the videos will be super helpful!

Seems like a good book. Did not finish it however b/c it really is a training manual.

I’m in the middle of his book and loving it! I also purchased his two video programs and have found them very helpful. I was also fortunate enough to hear him present recently. The book and video program give clear and concise instructions and suggestions that I plan to follow diligently to achieve results. Remember, it takes time, effort, and an open mind! Sean is someone who is of high integrity and is putting this information out to transform and help people have better lives. Why not give it a shot and see what happens?

This is a decent book on lawn care and it is helpful in maintaining and repairing lawns, but there really isn't any reason to purchase it since Scotts has an app that is much better. Just about everything in this book is in the Scotts My Lawn app and the app has even more features like weed identification, seedling tracking, and a fertilizer calendar. I would recommend trying the free app before purchasing the book

When I work part time in the spring and summer as a landscape gardener, this field manual comes in very handy. Fortunately, being spiral-bound and laminated to facilitate washing or rinsing with a damp cloth should it become dirty is great for any landscaper, gardener, turf management technician, or horticulturist. This field book explains in proper and efficient detail the "dos and the don'ts" of landscaping. Charts, tables, proper instructions for planting, pruning, growing and transplanting, etc. for the novice to the professional. I don't leave home without it when I'm working the warm months.

The best lawn book I own. I have had various lawn books over the years, but this is by far the best. It begins with an interesting and timely discussion of the benefits lawns bring to our community. The photos are excellent. The authors are super and Nick Christian is a noted authority in the area of turf grasses. Not only will this book help you create and maintain that perfect lawn; but also, the book is fun to read.

Has helped me find out how to kill certain weeds and how to fix problems in my yard.Use common sense, if you can read this book is for you! It will help you take care of your lawn in ways you may not have known it is a starter book for dummies it is well written, there are more informative books out there but use this as a base and then go from there. So you can get used to the how to's.

This book provides a good summary of lawn maintenance for beginners like me. I'm quite satisfied with this. I wish, however, it described more on lawn maintenance in transition zones. For example, I wanted to learn more on mowing / feeding frequency (especially in winter when a cool season grass takes over the warm season grass), how to overseed, what warm and cool season grasses are the best match in a transition zone etc.I live in Triangle area in North Carolina.

I suspect there are some courses that use this as a text book. It's full of incredible detail and science while still being easily accessible to the newbie. I read it cover to cover and will continue to go back to it regularly as a reference. This is a cheap price to pay for some knowledge. If it saves you from buying even one bag of the wrong fertilzer or seed, it will have paid for itself.

This is a great book for new homeowner's. It's a comprehensive lawn guide that I've used frequently with my new house/yard. The best part about the guide is the detailed photographs. Many lawn issues that I had researched online had no pictures or poor pictures. This guide fills that issue. I only wish they had an app for iPhone/Android.

I brought this buy to help get my lawh to look a lot more nicer. It help a little not a lot. This book is a big endorsement for Scotts product and nothing else. Any and all problems in this book are solved by using Scott's product. If you are a fan of Scott's products than get this product if your not look at another one.
