I found this book an extreme disappointment. The book is an exact replica of her blog only she charges $25 to read. Another facet I found particularity annoying, was the use of capital letters on almost every page - YOU DON'T NEED TO CAPITALIZE EVERY PHRASE TO EMPHASIZE YOUR POINT. Real authors use creative writing to reach out to the reader, not in your face typeset. Please save your money and just visit the website if you really want to read this book.

I bought this book mostly because I grew up with Heather, but ended up appreciating it for other reasons.I have a picture of her at one of my birthday parties (sixth, I'm guessing), but I don't think we were too close. We did a 4th grade science project together that got urinated on by some stupid kid that didn't appreciate science. She always won the 4-H speech contest and every time I hear about Nathan Hale, I remember Heather because I still remember her speech about him. She always had a way with words. At our ten year high school reunion, she was pregnant with Leta but not obvious enough that you'd dare say anything, and I was also pregnant with my son, also not obvious enough that you'd say anything. I don't think either of us had a clue what post-partum depression was at that point. But we both learned.Leta is about two weeks younger than my son. I not only can identify with so much of what Heather writes, but I can actually hear her as she says it because I've known her since kindergarten. And I get it. Our experiences are not the same, but they are similar enough. I have had struggles different from hers in some ways, but very much the same in other ways. We have both dealt with PPD. Mine migrated into something else that had to be dealt with in an entirely different way. But it was just as serious and required hospitalization. And I'm still not recovered.I really love this book. When I read it, I can actually hear Heather speaking the words. The way she writes articulates her style; her feelings are something I'm able to identify with.I continue to follow her blog. The fact that our children are almost the exact same age is cool because I can compare what's going on with Leta to what's going on with Elliot. And I can identify with a fellow parent who didn't exactly fall into being a parent like it was the most natural thing in the world. Sounds great, but that's not real life, folks.

There are several people whose primary complaints about this book are her overuse of all capital letters (she does a lot of that, but it didn't bother me too badly...I guess it just depends on personal preferences), the fact that she talks about "eating" her baby, how she whines about not having time to pluck her eyebrows, the book is jumpy, and she says terrible things about her daugher.First of all, the references to "eating" her child are clearly a figurative way of referring to how adorable she finds her baby, for those that don't understand figurative expressions. She is clearly not literally referring to basting her child in a chablis butter sauce and letting her roast to a perfect juicy inside so that she may be consumed with a side of mushroom medley.Second, she barely mentions not having time to pluck her eyebrows, so who cares? Most new mothers don't. She mentions it once, she doesn't spend any time lamenting about it. And yes, the book can be a bit jumpy. Heather is not Tolstoy, nor has she claimed to be. Let us remember that she is a humor/mommy blogger not a serious literary figure. Cut her a break. She still writes pretty damn well for the genre. And the "terrible" things she says about her daughter? They are few and far between, but most importantly, they are JOKES. Not only that, they are HONEST, and possibly quite accurate descriptions of what new mothers experience. I would like to think that Leta will have an understanding of exactly what her mom meant someday if she decides to have her own children. I don't see how being realistic about both the frustrations and triumphs of motherhood are supposed to be so damaging to offspring. It's so silly to pretend like many mothers don't also experience negative emotions after having given birth for the first time, what's so wrong with expressing them? By being honest, she is able to open doors for others to feel less shamed if they are anything but elated after becoming first time parents. I don't see the harm in that. Now on to my personal feelings on the book. I have to admit there were times that I felt slightly annoyed at alllll her complaining (trust me, there is a lot of it in the book). Particularly with her "everything under the sun that could be uncomfortable about pregnancy has happened to me times 1,000" which seem to constitute the first few chapters. However, it was important to remind myself that this is in fact a humor book, and humor books are often over-dramatized for effect. Being a sufferer of depression and anxiety myself, I also found myself thinking, in the chapters after the birth of her baby, that possibly having a real job which required her to work outside of the home might have been a good thing for her. It seems she had nothing else to focus on other than her feelings and rearing this baby, and sometimes not having other involvements is what can make depression exponentially worse. I found myself rolling my eyes a few times and thinking "ok Heather, cry me a river. You've got all these postpartum issues, but the silver lining is you get to deal with them WITHOUT having to worry about rushing back to a full time job when your baby is about 3 months old like a lot of women! You get to sit home and spend practically every minute with your baby for as LONG as you'd like. Cry when your baby is eight weeks old and you're forced to leave her in a daycare for 40 hours a week." Those were really the only parts that irked me.The book overall, was a wonderful chronicle of feelings that can occur before, during, and after first time pregnancy, that are so very real to so many women. Heather does it in a funny way that is also balanced with a lot of heart felt commentary that is also completely relatable. I personally love that she wrote this book. If it were just a sad tale of postpartum depression, it would have been unbearable to read. But because it is balanced with humor and raw feelings, it is much easier to stomach. You get the sense by the end of the book that she truly believes motherhood is one of the best things she ever did, not that she regrets it in any way. I'm personally a fan of her ability to bring such common experiences and emotions to the forefront, as opposed to women only being allowed to sing the praises of new motherhood. In our society, it's an adjustment. It can be rough. It is both a physical, emotional, and lifestyle transition. I appreciated Heather's wit and gumption. The book was a little whiny, a little annoying at times, but the times when it was honest and touching far outweigh the former. A fun, quick, heart warming read for anyone who's either had a baby, considering having one at some point, or never even plans to have kids and wants to regale in the ridiculousness that comes with the treacherous territory of motherhood. Overall, for what it was, I enjoyed it.

The Cabins in the Pines resort is in trouble. Owner Wyatt has barely been able to make payroll ever since the interstate bypassed his family's rustic resort. Life-long friend Delaney thinks the solution might be a reality show make-over, but she doesn't count on watching the gorgeous show hostess flirt with Wyatt...or how jealous that makes her feel. With so much at stake and everything to lose, will Delaney and Wyatt risk their friendship for the chance at happily-ever-after?Loaded with quirky supporting characters and situated in a setting that will have readers recalling the best days of summer camp, Love On Location hooked me on the first page. I couldn't put it down until I devoured the final word and highly recommend this sweet romance! Many thanks to NetGalley and Hallmark Publishing for providing an ARC of Love On Location. This is my honest opinion of the book.

Sometimes you just need a good, clean, feel-good romance and that is exactly what Love on Location by Cassidy Carter is. Hallmark has found a spectacular way of bringing their feel-good romances into a different medium. I love their movies but I often felt myself wishing I could find those same types of stories (without all of the extra, unnecessary stuff) in a text form. Like, say a book. So when I discovered they were printing their own books, I was ecstatic. Cassidy Carter’s beautiful story did not disappoint. First, let me just say that the characters were great. I loved how distinctive they all were. To me, none of them blended together until it was difficult to keep them straight. Each of them had clear, unique personalities and were developed well. It was surprisingly easy for me to sympathize with each of them throughout the story. I even found myself liking all the members of the TV crew. They were all perfect. Also, I loved the way Cassidy Carter wrote and developed her story. It flowed in such a beautiful and natural way that I scarcely noticed the time passing as I read. Never once did I feel lost or bored or distracted by some insignificant aspect. The tale was well crafted and wonderfully balanced between the lighter moments and the more serious. But the thing I loved most about this book was the strong bonds of friendship between Delaney and Wyatt as well as between the entire Cabins in the Pines crew. It is not usually something that is woven into many books very well and it is quite refreshing. I loved this book and will definitely be reading more by Cassidy Carter in the future.

An enjoyable story about two friends and their rundown campground. Wyatt and Delaney have known each other forever but only now realize there might be more between them than friendship. However, the arrival of Alexandra, the glamorous host of the business TV show that their campground is featured in, changes everything. There’s tension everywhere and Delaney quickly develops a disliking toward Alexandra, who seems eager to be involved with more than just the campground. The pacing of the story is a little slow, but that works well, given the laid-back nature of the campground. The description of the surroundings is such that I could almost smell the pine trees! It really felt as if I was present with the characters, whether in the office, the Bean Pot restaurant, the cabins, or the pier. The local characters are generally lovable, quirky people, who have worked at the Pines for as long as anyone can remember. The TV people also seem to be a friendly lot, apart from Alexandra, who is not to be trusted. This is a sweet, clean story that makes a good read on an afternoon in the sun. It will certainly get you in the mood for a holiday!

Do you prefer to read your Hallmark romance or watch it? Movie or Book sometime this can be a tough one for me, but in this case, the author gave me all the visual pictures I needed in this wonderful book, that I could almost smell the pine trees. This is a sweet friend to love read that will captivate you with all the loving and caring characters. I love that it was not the classic Hallmark kiss at the end the ending was just perfect and very different in a way. I would love to read more about some of the other characters in this wonderful story as they all gave me a feeling of having their own story to tell. I highly recommend this heart-warming romance.Delaney Phillips works for her best friend Wyatt Andrews at his families business called “Cabins in the Pines”. A very rustic and loved family campground that has seen better days but is still so loved they all that work there. Delaney has to do something she is unsure if Wyatt will agree with but she has only had the business needs and the staff at the top of-of her motivation for this new idea. The Andrews family had always been there for her during her life and after her divorce, they were so supportive of her and her daughter.“She felt the little glimmer of hope in her heart, sparked by the thought that he’d consider her plan, turn into something warm and affectionate that she had no business feeling for her best friend?Wyatt Andrews inherited his families campground when his parents passed away tragically and his only wish is to keep the business running has his parents and grandparents ran it from the star. But he is almost running out of money and ideas to keep the doors open and his staff paid. His staff is more like family, as his aunt is his receptionist and his very best friend from his childhood is his number one employee. He would be lost without Delaney in his business and in this personal life as they both share their love of “Cabins in the Pines” from their childhood together. The new bypass in town has caused the slow decline in traffic to the campground and will the rundown of facilities how can they make it all work?“You're telling me that you volunteered the campground as the a…a…a filming location for this TV show without telling me?”A reality TV show “ABC’s of Business” is coming to the “Cabins in the Pines” but will it be for the better of the campground or will it seal the end that has been coming for a while know? Will the show bring more changes than just the amenities of the campground? Will Wyatt and Delaney finally face their true feelings.“Delaney felt more for Wyatt than mere friendship, but she had no idea if he felt the same way. And she would never have the courage to find out.”Wyatt’s friendship was too costly to find out and lose what they had already for the hope of anything more.“She was starting to feel like the line between reality TV and reality was getting a little blurred.”I received an ARC from the publisher through NetGalley. the opinions expressed in this review are my own opinions.

I was shocked when I got to the part that Harold was gay. I didn't appreciate having to explain this to my 5 year old

*First off let me say this review is about how certain topics have specific places to be discussed and a children's book is not one of them"My son loves to read these books before going to bed. When we got to the chapter revealing Harold is gay/bi everything halted. My son didn't understand why there was a man with Harold. I was totally blindsided by this. The normal potty humor and such is standard for these books but anything outside of that just does not belong in a children's book. Revealing Harold is gay was unnecessary. George and Harold could have just been at work when their younger selves came to visit leaving out totally their sexuality. Because there could have been a way to avoid this type of controversial topic it shows it was purposely put in by the author. I am reluctant to buy any books by this author now and if I do I will have to research the books prior because getting something like this thrown in your face so unexpectedly is outrageous. Let this be a warning to all parents.

My 7-year old son absolutely LOVES these books. Not only are they funny and keep him in stitches, but they have introduced him to some longer vocabulary words that he fully understands and uses now. I find him re-reading them when he is supposed to be asleep. The chapters are short enough to keep his attention and provide a fun plot for any first grade boy (or girl). Yes, they have potty humor which to a 6/7 year old boy is hilarious though some may think it is inappropriate. He loves reading, and even started writing his own comic books after we started the series. We are on Book 5 now!

Our 2nd grader struggled with reading and her confidence while reading out loud was low. She was so shy about reading out loud that her teacher thought she had a speech issue that required a referral to the speech pathologist at her school! We knew that she just needed to read more to build her confidence, however she didn't seem to like any of the beginner chapter books that we tried. We tried 7-8 various book series before we came across Captain Underpants. I showed our daughter the cover and she giggled. When we started reading with her that night we knew we had found a winner!! She laughed throughout the entire thing! The chapters are short and easy to read. The pictures help developing readers stay interested in the developing plot, and the humor hooks them! We are so thankful that we found a series that helped our daughter learn to love reading. Just this past week she came home from school and said that she wanted to check out a Captain Underpants book at her school library but her teacher told her no! She said that her teacher doesn't allow her students to read "those kinds" of books. I was so disappointed to hear that a teacher would limit reading options for young readers. The books are very silly and a little sarcastic, but if children can connect to a book I believe they should be allowed to explore it!! If the books were inappropriate I would think they wouldn't be allowed in the school library at all. I was happy to see that my daughter pulled the book out of her backpack and said, "I got it anyway!". A must read for any young/ developing reader!

Excellent for my 8 year old son

This book was released today and I just spent three hours reading it to my seven year old son. We actually re-read the entire series, which we own, in anticipation of this sequel, and finished book 10 last night before starting this one tonight. If you are a fan of Captain Underpants then this book is a sure bet. In fact, I think it may be his best work yet in terms of plot development and amusing moments. My son laughed out loud SO many times and I have to admit I did, too! There was a possible discrepancy between this book and the previous one. In the previous book, the time travel was stated as 30 years in the future (and the adult George and Harold were 39 3/4 and 40yo respectively) but in this book it was stated repeatedly as being forty years in the future. It did not seem to be a plot development issue, just a mistake. I went back and reread it to try to figure it out but I was left a little confused. If I am incorrect, please comment! In any case, the book was amazing, and my son never would have noticed the 30years/40years thing on his own! Thanks Dav for another really funny, well put together book that encourages kids to be kids, as obnoxious and as loud and with all the potty humor that it entails. You outdid yourself on the Uranus jokes in this one, though the potty song in the last one was pretty hilarious to my seven year old, too. I am always amused at seeing him so amused. :) you keep making them and we will keep buying them, as we read them repeatedly. This one is no exception, and in fact I think it is one of your best. Thank you!

And I like them too. I learned about this series when visiting family and saw that my 6 yr old grandson had two (of the 9) books in the series. His mother liked them as they didn't have offensive words (like fart and poop and snot and other stuff that so many young people's books seem to have these days. It is male-centered in a world (it seems) of books geared to girls these days -- and the male-figure ones are outlandish in wording and bodily-function jokes. The main character is a boy mouse and the adventures are fun for young boys who want to be a hero of sorts in a simple life. The Mighty Robot is the hero but his owner is 'the little boy mouse'. Fun for adults to read out loud and many simple words so young readers can want to read them too. At first my grandson was disappointed that the 'new' books were a reprint edition of the ones he had but then he realized that the pages were thicker, the graphics cooler and now he wants new books of the two he already had (which he found a a used books store/thrift store). Even the older edition books he read at the library had torn pages (thin newsprint pages). So he agreed the new books would work out just fine. He was super surprised that his grandmother was able to find all the books he was missing (the other 7) and they arrived a few days into her trip - lots of time left to read them all.

#57,474 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I came across this book in the Queer Sci-Fi Facebook group and was immediately grabbed by the description. I am a great lover of ghost stories, and this one had so much going for it. The boarding-school setting, the period, the distinctive and appealing characters, the mystery, and a wonderfully creepy atmosphere overall. And while this may not be something every reader cares about, I was extremely impressed with how well-written and free of egregious technical errors the book was. These authors obviously know their business. Nothing to throw me out of the riveting story. Reading this book was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. It is always a treat to find something in a genre you love that hits all the buttons so well. I will be eagerly looking forward to the next book to see where James's and William's next adventure takes them.

I purchased this book because of the 5 star rating and wasn’t disappointed! After all of the other Kindle male/male fantasy books I’ve read, this was nearly the top of the list for me.What I liked: the writing and storytelling are great! The ghostly suspense really kept me hanging on and anxious to turn to the next page. The romance is somewhat on the back burner to the main mystery but that was fine with me. I was much more interested in finding out what happened with Oliver than if the other boys would fall in love or not. What I didn’t like: there isnt much to write here! If I had to say something, I guess the length was short. But longer compared to the other kindle books I’ve purchased. I didn’t feel like anything had been left out or it could have been more detailed. It may be triggering for some people as it talks about hard topics like homophobia, rape, and physical abuse.Overall a light spooky read that will keep you wondering what will happen next!

It starts a little slow, but soon picks up steam. The first half of the book focuses on a very sweet budding romance between the two main characters, James and William. Set in a time of innocence, there is, refreshingly, no graphic sex or instalove. It does delve into darker subjects like opioid addiction and sexual abuse of a child. Then in the second half, the ghost story kicks into high gear, and from there, it's nonstop excitement. The ominous disappearance of James' roommate sends the boys on a determined quest for the truth behind the rumours of hauntings. The last few chapters and the climax are absolutely chilling and make the book a thrilling pageturner. I couldn't put it down. I stayed up half the night to finish it. Highly reccomended for those who love M/M romance, a good mystery or a spooky ghost story.

Such a unique and completely captivating tale that I absolutely adored! It’s creepy and scary, but hopeful and sweetly romantic. I was so hooked on this story I didn’t want to put it down- I needed to find out the secrets and what was coming next. But then I’d find myself setting it aside, because as much as I wanted to know what was coming, I didn’t want it to end. James and William, and the mystery that was Whisperwood, had me under their spell. The world building and the character development in this story were outstanding. James and William totally stole my heart and I wanted to be right there beside them as everything unraveled and came to a head. They are so different but so in sync and so caring with each other, I loved them! The secondary characters added a lot to this story and really helped bring it to life. The mystery and secrecy surrounding Whisperwood was so intriguing and made for such an interesting read. It's eerie and disturbing, and there's this overlying feeling of always being watched. It's heartbreaking at times, but like the title suggest, there is a light amongst the shadows.I really loved this book, it's so different from anything I've read before. And I'm so happy that it looks like we'll be getting more stories with James and William- I don't want their story to be over.

I liked this a lot. Carefully rendered, thoughtfully researched and written, effectively creepy and unnerving, and yet restrained in a way that is authentically British.Whisperwood (a fine Dickensian name) is a good school, but not a great school. Whisperwood is for those striving Brits who cannot afford Harrow or Eton (or whose sons are not quite up to that standard). It is also a school where parents put boys who have, for one reason or another, been deemed less than desirable at home. This is why James Spencer and William Esher have found their way here. William is a loner, whispered about by the other boys, but more or less left alone. James, on the other hand, appears to be less problematic, attractive and friendly; until we learn of the reason for his dismissal from home. Only Michael accepts James as he is, knowing the full truth, and this trust is at the center of their friendship. It is through these two young men (seventeen, what we would call juniors in high school) that the darker side of Whisperwood and its secrets gradually come to light. In a lovely, plausible touch, the authors use Victorian love poetry as a means of connection between James and William. It helps to pin the narrative in its time and place, but also works, in that oddly suppressed Victorian way, to help the boys express their shifting emotions without transgressing social mores of the time.Oddly, Whisperwood ends up being a sort of Hogwarts without the charm and magic – although there are supernatural powers at play, right from the start, in the rumors of ghosts that haunt the dormitories. What William and James are forced to confront is the unpunished wrong and cruelty in the world around them – in their own families, and in the history of the very place whose purpose is to educate and protect them. These boys – young men – have to deal with their own shame at who they are and then decide what to do in the face of far darker cruelty and injustice. Their inner strength, and their unshakable friendship, are their two most powerful weapons against the darkness. The authors are a lesbian couple in California who focus on YA books, and “A Light Amongst the Shadows” could easily make it in a YA-LGBT world. James and Michael’s burgeoning sexuality is both intense and chaste, and with good reason in James’ case. The authors handle this very neatly, piling on the romance without crossing the line. These characters are rich enough that we can let them hold onto some of their innocence. So much else is at stake within the bounds of Whisperwood. There are some complaints, which to me seems to be more the result of not having “mainstream” editorial departments who can catch every bit of false grammar or anachronistic lingo. Generally York and Altwood got it right, which is no mean feat. It felt British, and it felt nineteenth-century. They didn’t quite pull off the ring of Trollope, and that’s why it didn’t make five stars for me. But I bought the next book in the series, because I loved James Spencer and William Esher so much. I’m not ready to say goodbye.

Dance, Nana, Dance / Baila, Nana, Baila: Cuban Folktales in English and Spanish (English and Spanish Edition), by Joe Hayes

From School Library Journal

Grade 3–6—Hayes has a well-deserved reputation for classy, catchy retellings of Latino stories, predominately those from the desert Southwest of the United States. This collection takes him farther afield but maintains the quality of narrative and the characteristic "tellability" that readers and storytellers have come to expect of him. The title story relates the acquisition of fire from an old witch by two canny jimaguas, the Cuban term for twins. This story is similar in structure to Native American tales in which the thief is Coyote or Raven; here the siblings employ music and dance as their method. Many of the tales share this characteristic: a typical folktale motif combined with uniquely Cuban elements. "You Can't Dance/No baila" tells how the animals of the forest join forces to rid themselves of a pesky family of devils. Tales such as this one which involve tricking an evil character into harming himself, are widespread, as is the element of using an animal's behavior (in this case that of turkeys tucking their heads under their wings) to drive the action. "Buy Me Some Salt" is a Cuban variant of the Appalachian tale "Soap, Soap, Soap." Throughout, the tellings are clear and amusing, equally well adapted for reading or for listening. Sayago's acrylic illustrations are bright and bold, with black-outlined, highlighted shapes that almost resemble stained glass. They ably complement the text, but certainly the narrative stands alone.—Ann Welton, Helen B. Stafford Elementary, Tacoma, WA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. "Hayes’s language is characteristically expressive and descriptive in both languages. A bold pastel illustration that beautifully celebrates Afro-Cuban culture accompanies each story.…A great acquisition for upper elementary and middle school libraries, and an excellent resource for storytellers." —Críticas, starred review"Lively, often funny and sometimes a bit scary…Eminently tellable, all the stories have refrains and songs sure to get audiences joining in." —Kirkus Reviews"A lively bilingual collection of 13 folktales from Cuba with the type of vivid color illustrations books from Cinco Puntos Press typically include." —World Wide Work bulletin"The accessibility of Hayes’ vivid but streamlined language coupled with rock-solid structure of the stories themselves (replete with the repetition and building of tension that tellers and listeners rely on) make this accessible both to young readers and to storytellers and other adult readers-aloud." —Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books"Readers will have fun doing both with these unique and entertaining stories…A full page illustration precedes each of the thirteen folktales and provides readers with a perfect visual reference for the stories that Mr. Hayes has taken care to retell in the Cuban tradition." —Review of Texas Books"This collection of Cuban folk tales is a delicious mix of stories passed down for generations. Hayes, who first visited Cuba in 2001, fell in love with the island and its people and that love is reflected in his delightful book. These are stories that are even better when read out loud." —Tucson Citizen"Hayes has captured the essence and diversity of Cuba…Perfect for teaching bilingual students or units on world myths in the classroom. Recommended." —REFORMA newsletter"This colorful bilingual anthology of thirteen Cuban folktales has sabor, the flavor of the Caribbean, bringing the rich mixture of Spanish, African and American influences to his readers. Cuban folkloric wisdom and wit fill these pages. There is a rhythmic quality to the linguistic expression in both the English and Spanish narratives, reminiscent of the importance of rhythm in the Cuban way of life." —The American Folklore Society: Aesop Prize commendation

I bought this book after checking it out several times from the library. These bilingual Cuban folk tales are whimsical, wise and fascinating. The stories are from the "once upon a time" past that reflects a mixture Spanish, African and Caribbean heritage. The intended audience may have been school children but adults will enjoy it. I am an adult trying to learn Spanish and this book is an interesting break from workbooks. One favorite story is "Yams don't talk" which features a tricky turtle and the efforts a young couple to get the king (who else?) to solve the problem of their talking yams. Stories provide insights into human character but are not preachy. This purchase was the first time I bought a used book from Amazon. The book arrived in good condition as promised.

Terrific way to teach folktales in Spanish and English. It's a lovely resource for families or the classroom.

There are a variety of tales to enjoy.

I'm a professional storyteller and find this book to be useful and delightful.

Now there is such a reference for the sewer--an encyclopedic approach to gathering, shirring, ruffling, tucking, pleating, and quilting and their myriad variations. Filled with hundreds of diagrams and crisp black-and-white photos, this volume explains in detail how to achieve a tremendous range of three-dimensional fabric effects. This is not a book of particular projects; this is a book of instruction and inspiration for anyone who has ever wielded needle and thread. --Amy Handy

I live this book to customize by details that are different and not en mass. It really allows you to manipulate the fabric to make glorious clothing that no one else will have.

I love, love, love this book! It is well written, full of amazing examples, very readable. I've tried quite a few of the techniques in the book, found a few errors (such as one of the smocking patterns is not correct) but the description and photos are so accurate that it isn't difficult to figure out what to change. One of the most clever things about this book is that all the examples are done using the same undyed muslin fabric so you really focus on the fabric manipulation. For quilters, crafters, couture designers and all other sewers this book is a great "bible" of techniques to keep on hand. And so much fun to read through and imagine what you will make next!

Encyclopedic. This book is nothing more nor less than a categorized set of instructions for three-dimensional fabric manipulations. It's pretty exhaustive as a relates to endless variations of gathering, pleating, etc. These are not the only ways to manipulate fabric into shapes, of course. There are plenty of pattern, cut, and sew techniques that produce dimensional effects also. And, in fact, a few of the techniques in this book can be combined in that way, too.As many, many others have pointed out, the photos are black-and-white, the fabric used for demonstration is muslin, and the instructions are high-level. I.e., you better have some background sewing experience and a solid grounding at least at the intermediate level to really take advantage of this book. If you do have that, you are really going to enjoy this book! It truly is one of the better sewing technique books I have encountered in many years. On the flipside, if you do not have the background, if you need detailed step-by-step instructions along with a matching pictures, or don't have a good grasp of sewing terminology, this is absolutely not the book for you! Both my wife and I read this book cover to cover, which is pretty amazing for a technique book of any kind. And it will be used for projects immediately. (Please note this is not a project book!)As with any technique book with such scope, there is more breadth than depth in some areas. Entire books can and have been written on many of the individual techniques or categories of techniques described here. So if you are really advanced quilter, you will find the quilting section thin. If you are a smocker, the smocking section will appear thin. And so on. Much of the value is in opening your eyes to possibilities – and with enough information to execute on them. This one is a lot of fun for its target audience. Those who are not in that category will find it something of a frustrating head scratcher.

This really is a book about how to perform miracles with fabric! I disagree with Gingercook that this is not a book for novices or beginning seamstresses. I am just learning to use my Viking Topaz 30, taking lessons at the best sewing shop in Las Vegas, but I LOVE this book and, as others have said, cannot put it down! I have found ANSWERS to every question you could possibly have concerning getting fabric to do what you want it to do. I want to make a ruffle skirt for my 4 year old grand-daughter, but I want to make one with ruffles that stand out and "float" - not just hang there. Maybe other people know about Circular Flounce and cutting the ruffle pieces (as it shows on page 67) from a CIRCLE OF FABRIC - the strip closest to the center of the circle has tremendous flare, the next strip not so much and the third strip (which is cut farthest from the center of the circle has very little flare. The diagrams in this book are the best I have ever seen and they are on every page, helping you to understand, totally, how to do each step. It explains GRAINLINE BALANCE ON PAGE 70, with diagrams. Sorry but I had never heard of grainline balance, but I will never forget it now! I had never heard of a GODET, now I can't wait to try to make one and the SQUARE GODET shown on page 84 is one of the most beautiful things I have seen. Just take a large hankerchief (or large square of fabric) hold it by one of the 4 corners and let the fabric drape by itself. The drawing on page 84 shows this with 4 folds ending in a handkerchief edge. I can't wait to try to make one. I am taking this book to my instructors so they can teach me how to make a godet (go-day).I have never seen so many different drapery pleats. I especially like the CARTRIDGE PLEAT. Colette not only shows you all the different pleats, but she also shows you how to change them and make them look completely different. This book is an INSPIRATION, but it is not a book about which fabric to choose to make the miracles happen. It is about being able to make these miracles happen with ALL KINDS OF FABRIC.I'm taking classes in Heirloom sewing and this book shows how to do many of the Heirloom techniques and shows it with diagrams, making it easy to understand how to do all those intricate, gorgeous Shark's Teeth, Slashed Tucks, Keyhole Tucks, etc. The book also includes a chapter on Quilting and one on Stuffed Quilting & Applique, teaching you things that almost make you drool - because they are pieces of art and belong in a museum.I purchased this book on a whim while I was deciding whether or not to purchase the Colette Sewing Handbook by Sarai Mitnick and I ended up buying both of them.EVERY PERSON WHO SEWS OR WHO IS THINKING OF SEWING SHOULD OWN THIS BOOK. It is an inspirational book and a book of HOW TO PERFORM MIRACLES with fabric!

Good information, but I was very disappointed because all the pictures are black and white, and it is difficult to see the detail. I would have paid a little extra to have those pictures in High Definition and in color.

If you are a sewer, crafter, quilter, embroiderer, or textile artist of any kind you will LOVE this book! I accidentally ordered 2, but once I got them I decided to hang onto the extra to give as a gift. Clear, simple explanations of a variety of techniques from the mundane to the fantastic. Each section shows you a technique, such as pleating, and progresses from the basics to the more artistic uses of that technique. Lots of pictures and diagrams, as well as explanations for both hand and machine work. It will make you start projects you didn't know you wanted to do!

It was very outdated. Most of the new developments of Huntsville/Madison wasn't even on the map. It will be good for places that have been here for a while but I will be looking for a more current map book.

The American Map Company provides an accurate, intuitive, and quality product. I use the map book regularly and have found it reliable and convenient.
