This is a very good read for most since it demonstrates the history of fiat money and politics and it always ends sadly... The fact is we need to consider what his work informs is that we cannot expect "others" to make the "right" decisions when their are divergent interests seeking privileged position based upon govt edict.... we essentially do ourselves in as the "system" both politically and Sociologically, are not prepared to move to the next step. A level which was told to us many years ago. WE were told! Sometimes going back to what worked is better than doing what led to bringing you down.Good book as this subject is rarely taught or discussed.

The author breaks the book into historical examples. From these examples he draws conclusions which are written out at the end of each subchapter. He looks back at these conclusions and sees if they hold up under other circumstances in future chapters.Historical data include a prce index of rice in Ming China, Inflation in revolutionary America, and Florian exchange rates in medieval Italy.He is apolitical, and from Switzerland. So, to an American, it does not matter what political party you are.If you are interested in how politics and monetary policy interact with each other to cause inflation and boom/busts, this book is for you. It has definite lessons that we shed light on today's economy. Particularly, the "caps" and "hats" political parties in Sweden, and their inflation plight.This is a book I will 100% read multiple times. I can only say that about 3 other books. I reccomend this book with no reservations.

I did not ask for this book, but I am glad the publisher sent it to me for free. There is a lot of concern over inflation in the present era, but not a lot of structured thought about what drives inflation.This book takes the long term perspective, and looks at the wide array of monetary arrangements, and analyzes which arrangements produced more or less price inflation. The author shows that there is generally an inflationary bias in all currencies. Currencies that are backed by precious metals tend to experience less inflation, but many governments using such currencies debase the metals or clip the coins. That said, it does restrain inflation, because inflating a metallic-based currency takes a lot of work.To have significant inflation, one must have unbacked paper money. The same is true of defaults in bonds. In order to have a crisis, much debt must be issued relative to the assets and earning power of the companies. The debt is not backed by sufficient repayment capacity, and thus there are some defaults.A fiat currency in and of itself, is not sufficient to create hyperinflation. Hyperinflation only happens when the government finances itself by printing money with abandon.The book further distinguishes itself by explaining situations where foreign currencies come in to act as shadow currencies inside nations. Further, the book describes how inflationary situations end. One constant is that people quickly analyze where purchasing is declining, and seek stability through metals or relatively stable fiat currencies.One strength of the book is that at the end of each chapter, the author summarizes all of the main points. I recommend this book.QuibblesThe book is not dry, but it has a distinctly academic feel. Not everyone will take to the book easily.Who would benefit from this book?Economists would benefit from the book, and also those that like reading about the history of inflation. Everyone who has seen the movie Glory is familiar with the outlines of the story of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment. That "Brave Black Regiment" is also immortalized in August St. Gauden’s magnificent sculpture in Boston, as well as in books, magazine articles and on film. Mention Fort Wagner and the student of the Civil War can give you a virtual blow-by-blow description of the regiment’s most famous fight. But how many of those who know so much about Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and his men know anything at all about the 54th's sister regiments, the 55th, and the 5th Massachusetts Cavalry?Thunder at the Gates is a collective regimental history of the three black Massachusetts regiments. While I at first wondered if author Douglas Egerton’s decision to combine the story of the three regiments into one volume made sense, I came to see the virtues of this approach. The white officers all three regiments came from the same social milieu of earnest, educated, upper-class abolitionists. With the notable exception of Robert Gould Shaw, they were mostly from the elite of Boston. Some were even related to each other by blood or marriage. In addition, it was not unusual for officers from one of the three regiments to transfer to another of them.Putting them all together also highlighted the contrasts among the white officers. Charles Francis Adams, who would command the 5th Massachusetts Cavalry, comes across as a snobbish man of great prejudices. Col. Pen Hallowell of the 55th Massachusetts, on the other hand, was the sort of man who led his men but who also learned from them.Douglas Edgerton also gives us insights into the men who filled the ranks of the regiments. The three regiments were not identical in where they drew recruits from. The 54th Massachusetts recruited nationally from throughout the North and had very few Massachusetts men below the rank of lieutenant. The 55th included many former slaves. The men of the 5th Cavalry knew that they were a particular experiment because many whites believed that black men were incapable of the initiative required for an effective cavalry trooper.The author tells the stories of some of the men, including that of the African immigrant Nicholas Said and William Carney, the Medal of Honor winner. Egerton also looks at the discrimination the black troops suffered from the Union high command, and their direct actions taken to bring attention to the disabilities they had imposed on them. Resistance to unequal pay set the tone for soldiers bent on forcing the Federal government to recognize them as equal to white men.Douglas R Egerton teaches at Cornell University and a professor of history at Le Moyne College. He brings remarkable scholarship to this project, but offers his findings in clear text.This is a fine book for those readers interested in the military aspects of the war. It also examines the interplay of race, politics, and the army at a liminal moment in American history. Overall the writing is effective. I have been an Egerton fan since reading his stellar work, "Year of Meteors: Steven Douglas, Abraham Lincoln, and the Election that Brought on the Civil War." Egerton's reputation as an author was the reason I bought this book, although I am little interest in stories of the Civil War. The book provides as much detail about the battles fought by three Massachusetts volunteer regiments as one would want. But the book's value is in telling the story and providing an understanding of the African American soldiers who made up those regiments, including the 54th Massachusetts of "Gloryi," the movie, fame. Egerton knows the arc of a good story and has the sensitivity to bring life to it.

A powerful story of black soldiers fighting for the freedom and equality of all African-Americans during and following the American Civil War.

I'm a history buff and just love all the details to this story. I highly recommend it.

I am so glad that this book was translated to english and published here in the States. Please, don't get me wrong, but it is "nice" to have a book about other victims of the Nazi death camps besides Jewish accounts. It serves to remind us and teach us that others too were sentenced to those Death Camps. Many gypsies, resisters, communists, christians, and lesbians, all from different countries, EVEN GERMANS, were sentenced and died at the camps. This book in particular is a Who's Who, a list of a convoy of resisters (mostly communists) from France (mostly french, but there were other nationalities as well) who lived and died together. Each name has a story, some more than others. Stories from the survivors and from what relatives that could be found after the war.It's amazing that this book was first published in 1965 and is only now being published here in the US. But I'm glad I got to read it.

The information is basic at best, but the lack of decent navigation really turned me off these. I've purchased DK books for years and really like the pictures, maps, etc. I was really looking forward to getting them digitally on my iPad. Sadly after downloading these, I find out they are basic text with links to pictures, but next to zero navigation to go back to the first page you're on that gave you the link in the first place. Maps are useless. You can't zoom in and the hyperlinks didn't work. I contacted Amazon, and they were fantastic at returning them without any drama.

This was a test as I'm leaving on a three country, ten-day trip. Wondered if the Kindle versions of travel books would work out. I would say there are pros and cons. Pros: search ability, and the hypertext links to various sections of text. Cons: very small pictures not very high-resolution on my iPad 4. Overall, made decision to do this instead of buying three books and lugging them around.Since I'm only in each city for three or four days, the Top 10 books seem like a great choice. I've been to all of the cities before, just wanted updated information on museum times, restaurants, etc.

Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Travel are my favorite series of travel guides. DK produces the most detailed and beautiful photographic guides. I have one for every country or city I’ve visited since first discovering them 18 years ago while living in the UK. I still buy the books for trip planning (and the gorgeous visuals), but now I also purchase and download the Kindle version of their 'Lists of 10 Top' guides for the specific location to lighten my luggage load.

Top 10 Amsterdam (Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guides)This travel book is very eye appealing with great color picture and details, like the way it is laid out in sections, and the handy pull out map. The book has a clear slot in the back inside section to store the map when not in use. I have not had the opportunity yet to use any of the Eyewitness Travel Series books, but am looking forward to it! Great wealth of information for what I can tell without actually going to Amsterdam yet. It is perfect size I feel to still be able to read the information with ease while out and about, and still be travel size for carrying or sticking in a purse or backpack. It is 7-1/2" L X 4" W X 1/2" D. I want to buy the newest travel books and was looking for a 2011 updated version. I also like the fact when I was checking the copyright date 2011, that they seem to update them every few years, which is great I feel, because helps keep them current with the times.I cant give it a 5 star because I haven't actually used it yet, but hopefully it will help make my trip one day soon a 5 star trip.Happy Travels !

A really good pocket guide to Amsterdam. When you are traveling you don't always want to carry around a huge book and this solves that problem. It fits in your back pocket. It has tons of photos and maps.

The DK Top 10 books consistently provide the tourist information and maps I need for all destinations in a size which fits nicely in my pocket. These books are also regularly updated and published for almost all destinations worth exploring. The Top 10 attraction lists are usually well chosen to meet my tour interests. This 2018 edition covering Amsterdam is the only tour book I will need for my planned trip.

The pocket-sized Eyewitness Guides are much easier to consider taking with you on trips.The heavy tomes are wonderful for armchair preparation but too heavy to take on trips.The daily high-light sites are particulary helpful for short visits. Having a succinctlist of must-sees or unique detours is appetiziing.Size, shape, lists and maps are perfect!

I buy the DK books pretty much every time I travel. They never disappoint. They have great tips for lodging, food, shopping,and things to do and see! I love the fact that the top 10 series are so small and chock full of useful info that you can tuck them in your purse, backpack or coat pocket and take them with you on the go. I love to travel and although I have other travel books-the DK are my favorite & "go to" time and again.

This book is perfection. It's honest and raw, with characters (and dialogue!) that are so realistic, I felt like I was right there inside the story. Like a silent, unnamed member of this circle of friends. I laughed with these characters, I was angry for them, I felt their grief. It left me thinking more about generational differences, religious differences, our choices in life, and finding ways to be at peace.

Brilliant novel about the lives of working class transwomen in Manitoba, Canada. Very moving, and a real accomplishment as a work of social realist fiction.
