If there is one word I had to use to describethis book it would be;Stunning!!!The book supplies you with everything youwill need to know to create this amazingbeautiful lace designs.Before the chapters of the book startyou get a history of Shetland Lace Shawls.They include beautiful historic pictures.Chapter 1 is the apprentice pieces.This chapter has step-by-step instructionsfor knitting five mini shawls so that you can practicethe lace knitting techniques you learn.Each of these can be knitted in any thickness of yarnwhile you get used to the techniques.Chapter 2 is the pattern section.You can choose from any of the 15 shawlpatterns to start.With learning all the techniques in chapter 1you are capable of making any of the shawls in the book.Each of the patterns has full instructions with photographsand charts.And although you have learnt all the techniques thepatterns are also marked with theconcentration level so you can chooseone of the easier designs or one of the more difficult.I can honestly say that each of the designs are amazing.If you are used to making holes etc.in knitting patterns I am sure these are somethingyou could achieve.The book even says beginners can have a go.Elizabeth has brought her knowledge togetherand put it in a format that is easy to followand takes the fright out ofShetland Lace Shawls.Elizabeth also gives you all the knowledgeyou will need to know so that you can takethe techniques and use them to create yourown designs.How special would that be to create your ownunique design for yourself or as a presentfor someone special.I received this book to review.However all opinions expressed are my own.No monies were exchanged.

This is beautiful book, nicely photographed with an added feature that I've never seen in another shawl book. I've seen it in books of lace patterns, but not in a shawl book. Along with multiple photographs of each shawl, so you can really see its shape and design...this book includes close ups of the lace sections alongside its chart. This is an amazingly helpful feature when knitting a stitch pattern you are unfamiliar with. Another really nice feature is the overall layout photo showing where each pattern section is placed, as well as grafting locations. Overall, this is probably the best format I've ever seen in a lace shawl book. And I've got about 50 of them! See photos attached.

I like so many aspects of this lace book. I like the way she gives step by step instructions for the Apprentice patterns she has.It takes all the guess work out of her Feature Pattern construction. Many beautiful patterns my favorite is the Heirloom Shawl.But I went to copy the charts for the Heirloom Shawl and found one of the largest charts has a portion on one page and the other portion on the facing page. It is impossible to get a good copy in this position. Even trying to follow the chart from the book would be a challenge.The Rows are numbered on the Apprentice Patterns but not on her Featured Patterns.I am still glad I got this book.

A good book to have on the shelf - for inspiration. I originally got this out of the library and thought it was very worthwhile to own.

This is a must have! So much wonderful information and gorgeous patterns. You will find yourself planning to make each one! I could not put this book down until I read through from the front to back cover. It is so very well organized. This book won't sit and gather dust on the book shelf for certain.

Very good book for detailed lace patterns.

I wanted to love this book. The patterns are lovely - I found several that I want to put on my to-do list. That is, until I discovered that the recommended needle size for almost all of them is much, much too big. That won't keep me from knitting them, but it will mean a hassle - guessing at the amount of yarn and the finished size and frequently having to add stitches and rows to make the finished item big enough.I was very surprised when I saw the size needles Ms. Lovick recommends. No other designer of Shetland lace that I have found uses needles that big. Not only would the final product be so open that the pattern could hardly be seen (in spite of the pictures), it would be very hard to knit such fine yarn with such big needles.I will be using some of these patterns, but only with very heavy editing, which diminishes the usefulness of this book. It's a disappointment.

Would not own my D7100 or D750 without these books from Darrell Young. Invaluable guides.

I recently purchased a Nikon D750 after a 20 year gap in SLR use. I "gave away" my old Canon 35 mm gear to a large and well known Nikon dealer using the small proceeds to help fund the D750. I have waited for a good quality full frame DSLR with decent tracking ability and some condescension to amateurs. Along came the D750! A shout out to DPReviews for their excellent analysis of this camera and it`s competition. My greatest fear is understanding the camera`s myriad of capabilities and of my ability to put them to use. I checked the owner`s manual and purchased a reputable field guide to the D750 but in my untutored and humble opinion Darrell Young`s Mastering the Nikon D750 blows them away. This book takes a step by step, cumulative approach to this camera system. As a beginner I don`t feel overwhelmed but rather hopeful that I am able to make slow and steady progress. Thank you Digital Darrell and thanks also to the Nikoneans Press. I will look to your publications should/when future needs arise.

I love the Mastering the Nikon series books. They are very detailed in friendly, easy to understand language. This book contains a wealth of information, not just running through the camera's features (step-by-step), but the various camera options are laid out with great detail on how, when, and why you'd use whatever option. It's amazing how much information is packed in this book.Another neat addition are the links offered for online downloadable resources/documents scattered throughout the book.I have the paperback and the digital download as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone that owns a Nikon D750.

If you only buy one instructional book on the D750, make this one the one. Very well organized with pictures of every possible screen display and when, why and how to use them all. With this guide there is no need for the owners manual although it even provides page references in the owners manual for many of the functions described in the book. I don't know how it could have been any better.

Very well written, organized, and illustrated book. Of the 566 pages the first 426 pages cover are for the most part a duplication of the Nikon user manual and what menu settings are available along with recaps of the settings the author uses personally. For someone whose first digital camera or first Nikon digital camera purchase in the past 8 years this is useful information.As the recommendations are based on what the author shoots his preferences are naturally biased and there are not adequate explanations as to the pros and cons of each of the settings and this is important for the reader to decide which setting is best for what they plan to photograph. For example he states that he always uses matrix metering and this is not the best choice when photographing people that are back lit or scenes where there is a lot of sky as when using wide angle lenses or a zoom lens at its wide angle setting.This also applies with his use of the auto shutter speed setting whereby the camera selects a minimum shutter speed based on the old rule of the reciprocal of the focal length of the lens. A third of the time this will be correct and the remainder of the time it will be too slow or too fast a shutter speed than is actually needed for the situation. With current cameras the resolution provided is greater than that of 35mm film and so camera or subject motion blur is more likely to be visible. It also is dependent on the skill of the photographer and how they hold the camera and release the shutter.The author advises throughout the book that readers try different settings to see how they work. This is excellent advice. In particular as with the settings information there are gaps and inaccuracies. One example is the Auto EV setting that can enable users to change the EV with a command dial instead of using the EV button on the top of the camera. Not so simple as that actually as this setting only shows EV adjustment is being done and not whether the EV is positive or negative when looking through the viewfinder - unlike the change in the viewfinder display when using the EV button instead to make adjustments. This goes back to the lack of pros and cons to using different camera settings, some of which are minor and others that are major.For experienced Nikon shooter who have a recently acquired a D750 camera there is little of value in the first 426 pages. For the inexperienced shooter there is a more user friendly guide than the Nikon manual but it can also mislead novices with its subjective recommendations on camera settings. Even the new autofocus capabilities introduced by Nikon in the D750 are glossed over and the reader has not more idea of the different strengths and weaknesses of each in different situations.Anyone hoping to get additional information not provided with the Nikon user manual with respect to shooting video is going to be disappointed. Settings are covered in detail but with little reference to how they will affect the shoot or the resulting video. Information on progressive versus interlaced is incorrect with respect to shooting video as is the fps setting guidance which depends upon the region in the world where the video will be displayed on a monitor 50HZ or 60Hz which affects the viewing of video shot at 25/50 fps or at 30/60 fps.

Probably goes into too much detail about things more like a reference manual, but it certainly is comprehensive and I am working my way through the entire thing on my Kindle. Helps to understand all the camera features (such as sRGB vs. Adobe RGB) to make best use of the camera. Won't necessarily make you a better photographer, but at least the camera won't get in the way when it doesn't have to! It is more than the camera manual regurgitated.

This book walks you through the buttons, setting recommendations, menu contents, metering, exposures, white balance, etc. of the D750. Additionally, there are notes and suggested settings recommendations that help amateur photographers figure out what works for getting started before mastering every setting on the camera. Young uses laymen's terms to describe everything; all in an encouraging tone so that you do not feel like an idiot for not understanding photographic technical jargon .Good description of the main or basic elements of photography - aperture, shutter speed, image quality, focus, ISO, distortion, etc. - along with supporting photographs to illustrate the concept. The insights provided by an experienced photographer/teacher were extremely helpful.

I just recently purchased the Nikon D750 and have never owned a DSLR . Even though the factory owner's manual seems to be adequate, I decided any additional information could be helpful. Even though I haven't read through the whole book yet , I have read enough to know that it contains much valuable information that will help me as a novice to understand this complex camera .

A must have book for D750 owners. I have another book that gives all the technical setting details but this book also gives the author's own recommendations after each section and I really appreciated that.

This is a very good read for most since it demonstrates the history of fiat money and politics and it always ends sadly... The fact is we need to consider what his work informs is that we cannot expect "others" to make the "right" decisions when their are divergent interests seeking privileged position based upon govt edict.... we essentially do ourselves in as the "system" both politically and Sociologically, are not prepared to move to the next step. A level which was told to us many years ago. WE were told! Sometimes going back to what worked is better than doing what led to bringing you down.Good book as this subject is rarely taught or discussed.

The author breaks the book into historical examples. From these examples he draws conclusions which are written out at the end of each subchapter. He looks back at these conclusions and sees if they hold up under other circumstances in future chapters.Historical data include a prce index of rice in Ming China, Inflation in revolutionary America, and Florian exchange rates in medieval Italy.He is apolitical, and from Switzerland. So, to an American, it does not matter what political party you are.If you are interested in how politics and monetary policy interact with each other to cause inflation and boom/busts, this book is for you. It has definite lessons that we shed light on today's economy. Particularly, the "caps" and "hats" political parties in Sweden, and their inflation plight.This is a book I will 100% read multiple times. I can only say that about 3 other books. I reccomend this book with no reservations.

I did not ask for this book, but I am glad the publisher sent it to me for free. There is a lot of concern over inflation in the present era, but not a lot of structured thought about what drives inflation.This book takes the long term perspective, and looks at the wide array of monetary arrangements, and analyzes which arrangements produced more or less price inflation. The author shows that there is generally an inflationary bias in all currencies. Currencies that are backed by precious metals tend to experience less inflation, but many governments using such currencies debase the metals or clip the coins. That said, it does restrain inflation, because inflating a metallic-based currency takes a lot of work.To have significant inflation, one must have unbacked paper money. The same is true of defaults in bonds. In order to have a crisis, much debt must be issued relative to the assets and earning power of the companies. The debt is not backed by sufficient repayment capacity, and thus there are some defaults.A fiat currency in and of itself, is not sufficient to create hyperinflation. Hyperinflation only happens when the government finances itself by printing money with abandon.The book further distinguishes itself by explaining situations where foreign currencies come in to act as shadow currencies inside nations. Further, the book describes how inflationary situations end. One constant is that people quickly analyze where purchasing is declining, and seek stability through metals or relatively stable fiat currencies.One strength of the book is that at the end of each chapter, the author summarizes all of the main points. I recommend this book.QuibblesThe book is not dry, but it has a distinctly academic feel. Not everyone will take to the book easily.Who would benefit from this book?Economists would benefit from the book, and also those that like reading about the history of inflation. Few things truly change in History; the names may change, but we make the same mistakes.

Everyone who has seen the movie Glory is familiar with the outlines of the story of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment. That "Brave Black Regiment" is also immortalized in August St. Gauden’s magnificent sculpture in Boston, as well as in books, magazine articles and on film. Mention Fort Wagner and the student of the Civil War can give you a virtual blow-by-blow description of the regiment’s most famous fight. But how many of those who know so much about Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and his men know anything at all about the 54th's sister regiments, the 55th, and the 5th Massachusetts Cavalry?Thunder at the Gates is a collective regimental history of the three black Massachusetts regiments. While I at first wondered if author Douglas Egerton’s decision to combine the story of the three regiments into one volume made sense, I came to see the virtues of this approach. The white officers all three regiments came from the same social milieu of earnest, educated, upper-class abolitionists. With the notable exception of Robert Gould Shaw, they were mostly from the elite of Boston. Some were even related to each other by blood or marriage. In addition, it was not unusual for officers from one of the three regiments to transfer to another of them.Putting them all together also highlighted the contrasts among the white officers. Charles Francis Adams, who would command the 5th Massachusetts Cavalry, comes across as a snobbish man of great prejudices. Col. Pen Hallowell of the 55th Massachusetts, on the other hand, was the sort of man who led his men but who also learned from them.Douglas Edgerton also gives us insights into the men who filled the ranks of the regiments. The three regiments were not identical in where they drew recruits from. The 54th Massachusetts recruited nationally from throughout the North and had very few Massachusetts men below the rank of lieutenant. The 55th included many former slaves. The men of the 5th Cavalry knew that they were a particular experiment because many whites believed that black men were incapable of the initiative required for an effective cavalry trooper.The author tells the stories of some of the men, including that of the African immigrant Nicholas Said and William Carney, the Medal of Honor winner. Egerton also looks at the discrimination the black troops suffered from the Union high command, and their direct actions taken to bring attention to the disabilities they had imposed on them. Resistance to unequal pay set the tone for soldiers bent on forcing the Federal government to recognize them as equal to white men.Douglas R Egerton teaches at Cornell University and a professor of history at Le Moyne College. I have been an Egerton fan since reading his stellar work, "Year of Meteors: Steven Douglas, Abraham Lincoln, and the Election that Brought on the Civil War." Egerton's reputation as an author was the reason I bought this book, although I am little interest in stories of the Civil War. The book provides as much detail about the battles fought by three Massachusetts volunteer regiments as one would want. But the book's value is in telling the story and providing an understanding of the African American soldiers who made up those regiments, including the 54th Massachusetts of "Gloryi," the movie, fame. Egerton knows the arc of a good story and has the sensitivity to bring life to it.

A powerful story of black soldiers fighting for the freedom and equality of all African-Americans during and following the American Civil War.

I'm a history buff and just love all the details to this story. I highly recommend it.

I am so glad that this book was translated to english and published here in the States. Please, don't get me wrong, but it is "nice" to have a book about other victims of the Nazi death camps besides Jewish accounts. It serves to remind us and teach us that others too were sentenced to those Death Camps. Many gypsies, resisters, communists, christians, and lesbians, all from different countries, EVEN GERMANS, were sentenced and died at the camps. This book in particular is a Who's Who, a list of a convoy of resisters (mostly communists) from France (mostly french, but there were other nationalities as well) who lived and died together. Each name has a story, some more than others. Stories from the survivors and from what relatives that could be found after the war.It's amazing that this book was first published in 1965 and is only now being published here in the US. But I'm glad I got to read it.

The information is basic at best, but the lack of decent navigation really turned me off these. I've purchased DK books for years and really like the pictures, maps, etc. I was really looking forward to getting them digitally on my iPad. Sadly after downloading these, I find out they are basic text with links to pictures, but next to zero navigation to go back to the first page you're on that gave you the link in the first place. Maps are useless. You can't zoom in and the hyperlinks didn't work. I contacted Amazon, and they were fantastic at returning them without any drama.

This was a test as I'm leaving on a three country, ten-day trip. Wondered if the Kindle versions of travel books would work out. I would say there are pros and cons. Pros: search ability, and the hypertext links to various sections of text. Cons: very small pictures not very high-resolution on my iPad 4. Overall, made decision to do this instead of buying three books and lugging them around.Since I'm only in each city for three or four days, the Top 10 books seem like a great choice. I've been to all of the cities before, just wanted updated information on museum times, restaurants, etc.

Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Travel are my favorite series of travel guides. DK produces the most detailed and beautiful photographic guides. I have one for every country or city I’ve visited since first discovering them 18 years ago while living in the UK. I still buy the books for trip planning (and the gorgeous visuals), but now I also purchase and download the Kindle version of their 'Lists of 10 Top' guides for the specific location to lighten my luggage load.

Top 10 Amsterdam (Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guides)This travel book is very eye appealing with great color picture and details, like the way it is laid out in sections, and the handy pull out map. The book has a clear slot in the back inside section to store the map when not in use. I have not had the opportunity yet to use any of the Eyewitness Travel Series books, but am looking forward to it! Great wealth of information for what I can tell without actually going to Amsterdam yet. It is perfect size I feel to still be able to read the information with ease while out and about, and still be travel size for carrying or sticking in a purse or backpack. It is 7-1/2" L X 4" W X 1/2" D. I want to buy the newest travel books and was looking for a 2011 updated version. I also like the fact when I was checking the copyright date 2011, that they seem to update them every few years, which is great I feel, because helps keep them current with the times.I cant give it a 5 star because I haven't actually used it yet, but hopefully it will help make my trip one day soon a 5 star trip.Happy Travels !

A really good pocket guide to Amsterdam. When you are traveling you don't always want to carry around a huge book and this solves that problem. It fits in your back pocket. It has tons of photos and maps.

The DK Top 10 books consistently provide the tourist information and maps I need for all destinations in a size which fits nicely in my pocket. These books are also regularly updated and published for almost all destinations worth exploring. The Top 10 attraction lists are usually well chosen to meet my tour interests. This 2018 edition covering Amsterdam is the only tour book I will need for my planned trip.

The pocket-sized Eyewitness Guides are much easier to consider taking with you on trips.The heavy tomes are wonderful for armchair preparation but too heavy to take on trips.The daily high-light sites are particulary helpful for short visits. Having a succinctlist of must-sees or unique detours is appetiziing.Size, shape, lists and maps are perfect!

I buy the DK books pretty much every time I travel. They never disappoint. They have great tips for lodging, food, shopping,and things to do and see! I love the fact that the top 10 series are so small and chock full of useful info that you can tuck them in your purse, backpack or coat pocket and take them with you on the go. I love to travel and although I have other travel books-the DK are my favorite & "go to" time and again.
