Loved reading the history of our new home!
Great little book. It gave me some insight about Sanibel's history before I took my trip there. Clear pictures and explanations. I'm glad I bought it.
Good book.
Find out if Ponce De Leon actually searched for the fountain of youth in Sanibel!!!Who were the two famous inventors who spent time on Sanibel ???These and other historic facts can be found in this well documented journal of Sanibel..Kudos to Jeri Magg.....
Its nice to know the history of what you see today!
Fair at best
In Jeri Magg's book "Historic Sanibel & Captiva: Tales of Paradise", the author captures fascinating details of the islands. After 30 years of listening to innumerable tales, and a couple of years putting the book together, Magg has created a book that is a treasure chest of information. The reader will learn how Ponce de Leon first met the Calusa Indians in 1513 and how the Spaniards killed 80 warriors. Eight years later, he foolishly returned to the area and the Calusa exacted their revenge, killing 80 Spaniards. The next few centuries were flooded with pioneers, fisherman and clergymen in their quest to tame the wilderness in search of a better life. By 1889, there were 21 houses and 40 families living on Sanibel, bringing the total population to 100. Magg covers everything from the construction of the causeway and bridge, to the early inhabitants who paved the way for what is enjoyed today on the islands. This is a book that will delight and intrigue you from start to finish.
In Jeri Magg's book, Historical Sanibel and Captiva Island: Tales of Paradise, the author has proven herself a notably competent researcher as well as a fascinating storyteller who makes the past come alive. I had no idea that it had been five thousand years since the nomatic Indians moved into the Florida Peninsula, the Calusa or (red man) as they were called. Ms. Magg provides details and photographs that substantiate each piece of historical data. It was intriguing to learn about the first postmaster and school teacher on Sanibel and how Buck Island got its name. This book has given me a captivating look into the life and times of the people who made this part of America so culturally rich. Pat Lynch- Florida
