This book has become my go-to source for microbiology topics. The information that is presented is high-yield and concise, and while it may not give the whole picture, it does provide you with what you need to know. I like this book because it tells me what I need to know without overwhelming me. If you are a medical student, this book makes a great resource for board review, however if you are a microbiology student you would likely find the information in this book a little lacking in depth.
I only read the 90 or so pages of this book that covered Immunology as per the recommendation of many other students that had used it solely for that. It is by far the best immunology text I have come across, especially for Step 1 review (on account of the short length of the immuno section) and I own at least 3 immuno books including High Yield, Case Files, and some Lange review of Micro/Immuno book that I do not think are nearly as good. If you are thinking about buying an Immunology book to review for Step 1 or even to use during a med school immunology course, look no further. I highly recommend this book.
This is one of the few books I feel compelled to write a review about -- it is incredibly well-written with a narrative that aids in both understanding of the material and memorization of it for the boards. The writing is clear, accessible, and concise -- although there certainly is a bit of repetition of important concepts (which I personally find very helpful). One interesting aspect of this text is its linkage of boards material with current understanding of microbes and other current events. Discussion of recent outbreaks/epidemics, for example, made reading this text much more lively and explanations of difficult concepts are elucidated incredibly well. Hundreds of step 1-type questions follow at the end (multiple choice), as well as about 40 or so cases using buzz-words that are essential for boards (e.g. currant jelly, flask-like lesion, a rose-gardener with subcutaneous lesions, etc.). A fantastic book, highly recommended.
This is a "review" book but it gives a very thorough background of all major concepts. The text is a little lengthy for last minute USMLE cramming, but there are very succinct, high-yield summaries in the back of the book, complete with typical vignettes and diagnostic tables. I really enjoyed working my way through it and learned a lot.
Excellent intro for my granddaughter into a difficult subject. Micro. Was my favorite college course. Hoping to make it here.
I received this book about a week ago to supplement my studying for my Medical Immunology and Microbiology course. This has been terrific at helping to clarify the lectures that my professors give. The only problem that I've found is that the Index is not always correct in terms of page numbers. If you are looking for something and can't find it on the pages listed in the index, look a page before or after (usually after) the page listed and you should find it. Besides that, I'm really glad that I purchased this book.
Excellent review for both. It helps me on both basic sciences. Great explanation and great details.
This book was very helpful in understanding immunology and microbiology. It was an easy read and provides great explanations of things! The questions are also very helpful.
