Pretty straight forward music theory. Good first time introduction or good review of music theory. Definitely a good primer for further study. I'm going to use it as an outline for study. Not to wordy and easy to understand. One of the best beginning theory/work books I've seen or used.

I bought this for my wife so she can learn basic music theory as she learns playing the uke. I already know much of music theory and quickly read through this book and found it does contain the fundamentals of music theory. However, because it does not go into much depth or explanation for each topic I see this more of course material where someone knowledgeable is doing the teaching and explaining and using this book as a reference. While not the worse, if you're looking to learn music theory on your own there are better books out there.

Great theory book for review of my students that I've taught since they were young and now are leaving for college. It has let me know where they are missing info from the past and filling it in before heading to music schools around the country. It is comprehensive and sequential (which I love in all things!). Thanks to Sandy Feldstein for doing such a great job!

This is laid out very well. The textbook has written exercises in it and could be used as a supplement to most any other piano instruction. My daughter took eight years of piano and felt her theory was a little weak, so we bought this book. She has said it has helped her read music more fluently. The book goes from very very simple theory, to advanced concepts.

Similar to another reviewer, I'm a 60+ beginning guitarist, looking for a music theory tutorial. I've been disappointed by 'Guitatar Theory For Dummies', found it to poorly written from an instructional point of view. Example: At the end of a chapter, a series of questions caused me to search fruitlessly for answers I must have missed, only to learn that NONE of the questions was covered in the chapter! The questions are posed as a tease for following chapters.Practical Theory is clearly written, obviously by an experienced teacher for the sole purpose of instruction. Each subject is clearly laid out and then then drilled in by a series of exercises. I've learned more in a few evenings with this book than I've ever been able to understand from 'Dummies' or multiple internet sources. Highly recommend it!

I have used Sandy Feldstein's Practical Theory Complete for many years. As a private voice & piano teacher, I appreciate that this is a theory text that is accessible to beginner students, young and old, and as a refresher for those who know the basic music language. The format of the book, three clear explanations with practice then a review of the three "lessons" is helpful in the pace for the younger and to use as a Review Test with practical exercises to follow up with for those with knowledge of music. I also appreciate the "complete" volume because I can offer the savings to my students of purchasing all the volumes in one complete text. Thorough basic music theory knowledge is presented from note values to circle of 5ths in a great order for the end result of the student composing basic music. This text is a good opener to learning the vocabulary of the music language.

Great basic, basic book for adults! Very hard to find something like this. I teach in a University Music Department. Sometimes we get students who have never seen sheet music. They go into Music Theory 1, but they need some remedial theory, and most of it is designed for 5 year olds. I love these books.

As an adult beginner lute player, I am really thrilled with this book. I took piano as a kid but never learned any theory, and I wanted something that was thorough but not too complex; something that would allow me to understand what the other musicians are talking about when I play in an ensemble. This book is perfect; you can do each lesson in about 10 minutes, then there's a review quiz at the end of every section, and you correct your answers with the key in the back of the book. It's definitely not a substitute for a college-level music theory course, but for the serious amateur musician, it's great.

I'm a beginner learning music and this is a great way to begin....It will bring you from the very basic to much more complicated music theory..such as transposing etc. Highly recommend.

This book is an absolutely fascinating, detail rich read. I am only two chapters in, but already learning some really interesting things about human behavior and the ability to predict a person's performance. The book is very detail intense, and as a result I can only read a few pages at a time. Even so, I find myself going back and rereading paragraphs just to make sure I didn't miss something. I really did not think I would enjoy this book, as the subject matter is not something I would normally be interested in. I am reading it on the advice of my attorney, who is a very cerebral, ridiculously intelligent man. He insisted that reading this book would be life changing. While that remains to be seen, I have high hopes that at the very least this book is going to change the way that I think about things.

I tend to get excited when the best story tellers write a new book, and when the book covers a topic I have been focused on recently this is even more so. Such was the case when Lewis covered the Nobel Prize winning duo of Daniel (Danny) Kahneman and Amos Tversky, two psychologists who developed much of the base work behind behavioral finance. I also see its roots in Robert Cialdini’s books (Influence, Pre-suasion). While Kahneman (Tversky died in 1996 so did not share in the Nobel) wrote Thinking Fast and Slow to share their life work, here Lewis tries to identify why they worked so well together. In fact I don’t recall him talking about thinking fast (immediate response) or slow (long-term investor) at all. It reads somewhere between biography and non-fiction about behavioral finance.Some of the more interesting thoughts in the book have nothing to do with behavioral finance, but have lots to do with psychology. Lewis discusses Daryl Morey, who I would call a basketball sabermatrician. He has been GM for the Houston Rockets since 2007 using tactics similar to those described for baseball in the book Moneyball (also by Lewis). In this same chapter Lewis provides a definition of a nerd – a person who knows his own mind well enough to mistrust it. This sounds like something Charlie Munger would say (high praise).Both Kahneman and Tversky lived in Israel, where everyone serves a stint in the military, and both saw action in the Six Day War in 1967 and the Yom Kippur War in 1973 (when they returned from America to take up arms). Kahneman helped the Israelis design better tools for selecting officers and training pilots. Tversky was a paratrooper. Both were professors at Hebrew University at the beginning of the first war.Our mind tricks us. After the fact, we know exactly why we saw the event coming that no one anticipated (see Taleb’s Black Swan) and surveys weigh more heavily toward events that have recently occurred. The reasons often given relate back to our days as prey on the plains of Africa (thinking fast keeps you alive in that context – you run away from a predator, as fast as you can). One of the ways to catch these inconsistencies is to devise three options, where a person chooses A over B, B over C, and C over A. This violates the law of transitivity, familiar to anyone who has ever studied algebra or logic. Lewis provides many of these examples, as did Kahneman in Thinking Fast and Slow, and I fall for nearly every one. Even after I’ve seen them before (sometimes, occasionally, I remember).K/T developed several heuristics, where laws of chance are replaced by rules of thumb. “We often decide that an outcome is extremely unlikely, or impossible, because we are unable to imagine any chain of events that could cause it to occur. The defect, often, is in our imagination.”• Representativeness – we see a previously developed mental model rather than thinking through the facts as presented (and are generally correct). This creates systematic errors, such as looking at a kid and immediately deciding whether they are athletic. Looking at the negative can help avoid these problems. For example, the WW2 bombs landing in London appeared to target certain areas, but really were random. If you have 23 randomly selected people in a room, the odds are better than half that at least two share a birthday.• Availability – we more easily recall memorable events.• Conditionality – we make contingent assumptions when none are stated. We assume normal operating conditions (e.g., normal distribution, VaR). “…people don’t know what they don’t know, but that they don’t bother to factor their ignorance into their judgments.”• Anchoring (and adjustment) – if you are shown a large (or small) number, for example, then your response is then large (or small).• Simulation – what could happen dominates what is likely to happen – this can lead to analysis paralysis (I find it difficult to overcome this when investing for my personal accounts – it’s hard to pull the trigger).• Recency bias – recent events influence our probability assumptions.• Hindsight bias - once we know how something turns out, our recollection is that we predicted it in advance (similar to Black Swans – Taleb)How do ideas form in our mind? Is it conscious, or indirect? When we study in school, or for a credential, the focus is on repeating the “right” answer. While hard to grade, I’ve always thought it would be better to provide an answer and ask the student to improve it.Who knew that a bad experience could be remembered more fondly if the final part of the event was not so distasteful – the peak-end rule? This was tested using colonoscopies that ended with the medical instruments brought out of the body slowly or quickly. Doing so slowly made it more likely that the person would return for future tests.The risk manager will discover, usually the hard way, that avoiding a risk receives no reward but if you miss a risk then you will get the blame. This is a human bias.Accounting does not consider the impact on the environment, to limited supply, or to emotions. Utility theory overstates the value. Risk aversion is a fee willingly paid to avoid regret. In any case we all prefer to avoid pain more than we want to secure gain. We react more to relative changes than absolute ones, and probability is not straightforward.The benefits of a group often conflict with the benefit to an individual. Antibiotics are such an example. In total, limiting antibiotics is better because viruses have less chance to mutate successfully. For an individual, antibiotics are either useful or neutral. There is no downside to an individual to being treated with antibiotics.One of the fascinating revelations in the book (for me, at least) was the need to invert. “How do you understand memory? You don’t study memory. You study forgetting.” As we study other topics we should look for opportunities to utilize this strategy.While much of the interest in this branch of psychology is applied to investment strategies, K/T worried more about geopolitical biases and the series of avoidable mistakes that could be made by political leaders relying on gut feel. They thought that intelligence reports written as essays should be replaced by probabilities. Telling a story is not helpful in this context, but politicians tend to be afraid of numbers. We have seen evidence of this recently as briefings to the US president are said to be focused on charts and short sound bites.As you read about financial economics, this should not be your first book. I believe it is more useful to someone already familiar with the concepts from other sources. For someone starting out on this topic I personally like Why Smart People Make Big Money Mistakes and How to Correct Them by Gary Belsky and Thomas Gilovich to start and then Thinking Fast and Slow by Kahneman before reading the Lewis book.

With no doubt, I had great fun reading “The Undoing Project.”I was introduced to the work of Tversky and Kahneman as a college sophomore in 1988 by my teacher, hydrologist Joseph Harrington, who was a great admirer of their ideas. The beauty of what is now called “Prospect Theory” has inevitably stuck with me since. It is only in retrospect that I have come to understand it was radical for its time.So I swallowed whole “Thinking About Thinking” within a week of having read the Michael Lewis review on Bloomberg. And I’ve since really enjoyed the recent near-autobiography of Richard Thaler’s, as well as many of Dan Ariely’s books.Well, you don’t have to believe me on this, but Michael Lewis actually explains the concepts better!No joke, he really does.And he provides an unbelievably deep, personal and sensitive account of the explosive relationship between the two giants. A very believable account too. The research done by Michael Lewis really shows. He’s had phenomenal access too, it seems.And yet, the book does not hang together terribly well. Chapters 1 and 8 should not have made it into the book, they ought to have been relegated to the pages of Vanity Fair, where the author regularly provides fantastic material.More to the point, what we have here is a bunch of chapters that, chronological order notwithstanding, do not constitute a book. The incredible material, the wonderful expositions, the deep insights are all present and correct, but they fail to meld into a narrative. Even the title of the book, much as it has its roots in the work of Tversky and Kahneman, does not do justice to their contribution.It really pains me to say this, especially because the author’s previous effort, “Flash Boys,” was a genuine five-star book. Perhaps that’s the problem. Maybe if I was reading this straight off of “Boomerang” I’d have found it great. As it stands, I’m not sure I could recommend it to the general public.If, on the other hand, you have the remotest interest in Behavioral Economics, you genuinely can’t not read “The Undoing Project” and you are guaranteed to enjoy it.

This is definitely not a how-to book. It concentrates more on the history of the HTTP protocol, it's ongoing development and the primary differences between versions 1 and 2.For server administrators and developers this book delves into the additional capabilities that HTTP/2 provides and takes a jab at trying to answer the question, "Will HTTP/2 make my web server and websites run faster?" The answer to this question seems to come down to a resounding "it depends". A number of performance monitoring and debugging options for measuring your website's performance are explored, but you don't really come-away from reading the book thinking that HTTP/2 is some sort of magic bullet to improve performance. Obviously, this is not the fault of the authors. It's brief 130 pages is a quick read and gives you a good, general idea of the ways the protocol has been updated and where it is probably headed in the future. The data is presented in a rather dry manner, but is most certainly more entertaining than sifting through pages of RFCs. If you still want to get into all of the really gory details, this book points you in that direction though.

This is a short book - only about 100 pages. You can probably read through it in a day, although the author assumes you have a pretty strong background in HTTP already. This book is specifically written as a jump-start for somebody who's familiar with HTTP 1.0 and 1.1 who's interested in understanding the new HTTP/2 protocol. If that's you, this book will be exactly what you're looking for. In fact, I appreciated that the author didn't spend pages and pages reviewing the TCP/IP stack and the HTTP/1.1 protocol - although there's a very brief refresher on HTTP, he jumps right into the details of how the new protocol. What page count he does dedicate to HTTP 1.0 and 1.1 is mostly spent reviewing the problems with the old protocol that HTTP/2 was designed to fix - which does a perfect job of setting the stage for the rest of the book.

This is a very interesting guide when you want to look into the introduction of HTTP/2. It starts at an actual beginning, noting the how and why to many a thing, and it also discusses history, different forms leading to this, as well as terminology and why these things are important. There is a who should/shouldn't read this at the beginning of the book as well (you can see this in the free preview), and I think this helps to note who would or wouldn't benefit here. Basically, it works best for the novice and for folks trying to acquaint themselves to the ideas here, but it is not meant for those wanting comprehensive information on items like debugging or the like.

Although this book is quite technical, it remains very readable with quite clear explanations (for someone already familiar with HTTP).As the authors say, this book is not a comprehensive guide but it is an excellent introduction and should be all anyone needs to understand except for experts specializing in knowing the details of HTTP 2.This book is relatively short with only 130 very readable pages. Good coverage of the topic.

I'd actually recommend it as a good starter book for anybody wanting to better understand how HTTP/2 works. I've done web development for years and this dives a bit deeper giving me a better understanding of why I should care about HTTP/2.

This is highly readable and easy to understand. It's not truly comprehensive, but it does tell you all that you need to know. It's a must read for all who do business on the web.

For five bucks you get concise instructions, not reams of razzle-dazzle that leaves you wondering what it is, specifically, that you are supposed to do. You should read through the book first to get an idea where you are going. It is short enough that you can do this fairly quickly. Then download the tool kit from the author's web site. Even that is made simple for you. From there, start following the instructions. If you are seriously interested in anonimity, this is a good way to spend five bucks. You won't regret it. Get this instruction set.

Definitely a great book, I must say that for it's price you get great benefits, with tips and recommendations a non-technical user can understand.Although I'm a more technical person, and I would have preferred more advanced techniques on becoming anonymous, and also when we consider that not any software is 100% secure. The author explains key advantages and disadvantages on using tor, or even tails. And focus most of the tips to stay anonymous without overwhelming the reading. Just straight to the point. I find this good and useful for any kind of user.Considering this is quite a cheap guide, it's worth a lot. 5 stars.

Anonymous was a lot better than I had anticipated. It is a quick read and well worth the sub-$5-price. What I liked about it the best is that it outlines in cookbook fashion techniques for obscurity that are can be reproduced in the lab. Five stars would have been given for a more in depth selection of anonymous email services (that really don't exist anymore) (MyKolab*), or a basic tutorial to setting up your own email server (not as hard as you would think). Nice job and worth every penny.

Some great tips and information, especially from the author's site, but difficult for beginners to decipher due to some new changes made with TAILS. I also had to solve my computer's inability to boot from my flash drive. Will edit review once done with the setup but overall the steps are pretty straight forward.
